How our food choices may influence disease prevention. Dr. Greger has scoured the world’s scholarly literature on clinical nutrition, and developed this brand-new live presentation on the latest in cutting-edge research on how a healthy diet may affect some of our most common medical conditions. This is Dr. Greger's 2013 live presentation.
New subscribers to our e-newsletter always receive a free gift. Get yours here: nutritionfacts.org/subscribe/
In my annual nutrition review last year, Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (nutritionfacts.org/video/uproo..., I explored the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing our top 15 killers. Actually, if you recall, the top 16. Since side effects from prescription drugs kill an estimated 100,000 Americans a year, the sixth leading cause of death may actually be doctors.
And that's just from adverse drug reactions. Add in medical mistakes (which the Institute of Medicine estimates kills at least 44,000 Americans) and that brings "health"care up to our country's third leading cause of death. Throw in hospital-acquired infections, and we're talking maybe 187,000 Americans dead every year (and millions injured) by medical care.
The best way to avoid the adverse effects of medical and surgical tests and treatments is not to avoid doctors, but to avoid getting sick in the first place. This year I thought I'd run through the top dozen reasons people visit their doctors to highlight some of the latest research in hopes of moving my colleagues and me lower down the list of common killers.
So you can more easily navigate through the menu of diseases I cover, this presentation is also available on DVD through my website (www.drgreger.org/DVDs) or Amazon (www.amazon.com/gp/node/index.h.... If you want to share copies with others I have a five for $40 (www.drgreger.org/DVDs) special. All proceeds from the sales of all my books, DVDs, and presentations all go to charity.

Like him or not, you have to hand it to him, he's a clever guy. I've watched most of his recordings and his research is very in depth. He has succeeded in totally drawing together all the threads he pulled out in a most convincing, eloquent and often humourous fashion. I have read some of the derisory comments below and get the feeling that 'truth hurts'- that those who penned them are smarting from being stung. I myself changed onto a vegan diet, - over the course of the last 13 months to being a total convert now for about 2-3 months - and my blood tests and health checks in general have altered - been in the course of altering - for the better, to an extent not to be ignored - and I wasn't a 'fat slob fast foody junk-fooder' before either. No, as I wrote at the beginning, like him or not, like what he says or not, - it is all true. Ignore at your peril.

I think it's malpractice not to put your patients on a plant based diet. Doctors are like most people, they don't like change. Most are very intelligent in certain areas of life (i.e., math & sciences) but certainly not in every area. .

So many positive things are said of this man and other practitioners, and they have. Trust your own instincts and change to a plant based diet. This will never be mainstream thinking because there is so much money driving the status quo. As individuals we have a choice, that choice will never be supported by the mainstream. We will be called crazy but the quality of our like, the one thing we have control over will be better and as we age that difference will be event more apparent as we likely will not succumb to the conditions that our contemporaries will.

Regarding egg advertisement, I remember TV commercials in the U.S. featured a little song: "The incredible edible egg". You can't say they're healthy or nutritious or safe, but I guess you can say they're edible . At least the ones not infected with salmonella are edible (but still detrimental to your health and profoundly gross).

Yes, that's the main issue with people generally. They want to retain their lifestyle despite it being the main cause for being sick in the first place, so they'd rather consume meds and continue living the same way. Pitiful, I know. Well, I love my veg and fruits, so for me it's easy to say "go vegan" since I already am and I love my healthy diet that consists of both cooked and raw veg, legumes, and fruits in between meals. But people just like their lifestyle the way it is no matter what. Completely close-minded. On the other hand I often tell myself "why do I care?" The answer is simple: because of the animals. Not people.

Dear All, I am in my mid 30’s and have been vegan since July 2014 and it has been a very liberating experience for most part. I lost weight, had more energy, felt more in control of my life, rediscovered sport etc. Albeit, I do have some difficulties and would like to seek your counsel in this matter. Every since I started on the vegan journey I have had a very irritating problem: canker sores. The frequency varied, but I don’t recall more than 4 weeks passing by without suffering from one. I basically seem to have it all the time now. I am supplementing with B12 and eat a very wide range of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes as well. I simply can’t put a finger on this. Before I became vegan I used to have it maybe 2-3 times a year. Is their a connection? Am I doing something wrong? The second issue I seem to be having more and more is that I am incredibly bloated. To the point where it seems quite abnormal and I feel more like a a gas tank than a human being. The third issue I have been having since October 2015 is illness. I was basically ill from October to the end of December. Ill for a week, healthy for 2, ill for 2 weeks healthy for 1 and such. These are the 3 things that have been making my life difficult to live in harmony. I am a bit puzzled and don’t know what to to. I tried monitoring what I ate and the frequency of my problems, but was unable to find a link. Many thanks!

Thanks for this upload. It's cleared up something I've wondered about and that is that I do believe we all have a sell by date, our shuffling off of this mortal coil is pre destined. But what if our gone before us pals hadn't smoked/drank/eaten the wrong food etc? I share the view of some posters here that of course you retain your expiry date, but the time leading up to it has more quality. I've not eaten meat for 30+ years, stopped smoking over 10 years ago, and have now foresworn the booze (can't take the hangovers any more). I feel yards better and will be a healthy corpse :D BTW All this tosh about vegetarian food being 'bland'. I eat Thai/Mediteranean/Indian food. Bland? Not so much as steak and chips ...
