Sothpaw Designs | Become A Better Woodworker

Күн бұрын

I love helping new woodworkers and makers build your business, and this video will show 8 of my favorite and most popular projects of the last year! And best yet, they can be made from scraps and many of these projects don't require advanced tools. For those of you who like my CNC related content, I also include advanced options. And.... sorry. I misspoke in the beginning! There's only 8 projects, not 10....oops.

I am so amazed what you can create out of an engraver/laser machine. I have come around to realize this can help me grow. I get several questions if I engrave and the answer is "no", mainly because I always thought it was a handheld tool. Like I said I'm a beginner or maybe not even that because I don't have a machine yet.

I HATE that it took me sooooo long to come across your channel! Such great content and the way you give all the information needed. If I could ask one thing it would be that when you show the final piece, such as the burial tomb with three to four pieces, that you film or show a picture from the side and top to give a better idea of how to place the alignment. Please keep making these awesome videos!

First of all- you're not a dumb @ss. On the utensil caddy: If I were the one making it, I would make some reversible face plates (ex. Fall/Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year's, Spring/Easter, ect.) On the spice rack: Try using a small Dremel tool (Harbor Freight carries them for about 10$) to sand your small parts. Faster than hand sanding and will save your fingers from getting torn up. The indentation on your glue bot is to hold your cap and keep it clean/keep it from dragging the glue all over your work piece 😉 Question: Do you have printable templates for the spice rack? I don't have a CNC, but if I had a template to follow, I could use a jig saw or bandsaw to cut out the parts.
@SothpawDesigns
@SothpawDesigns 4 ай бұрын
That was actually the plan for the utensil caddy, I just messed up the back side, so I didn't show the backside. I should have shown the mistake and made that point. And here's the link to the spicerack download. www.sothpawdesigns.com/store/p/cnc-spice-rack-free-download-files

I saw that countersink bit fall out on you. I put up with those Dewalt drills doing that for years because the brake is so strong it loosens the bits. I just learned this year if you tighten the chuck down, then slightly loosen it. It will click. This actually locks the chuck and that doesn't usually happen anymore. Maybe you already know this and it was just a fluke but I was to the point of replacing the tool, and this trick changed everything. Mine is about 10yrs old and has an all metal chuck but I bet yours is the same.

Liked the box. and you could have two faces in one board, if the engrave is not to deep. I would prob laser it. And th whine rac was a great idea. Only think I would add is to extend the grips to the edge so it’s easier to reach under, like the butcher blocks do
@SothpawDesigns
@SothpawDesigns 5 ай бұрын
Wow! Everything that you just wrote are things that I later realized myself. My newest wine boards have a pocket that comes out to the edge, so you can have maximum surface area for charcuterie, and can more easily reach under to pick it up. And regarding the box with the messages on each side, that was actually my original idea, but I messed up one side, so the video only shows the other side. And I'm 100% in agreement on the laser. Quicker, cheaper, and easier to make. Good calls.

It's definitely oak, beyond a shadow of a doubt. The grain is a dead giveaway. Now, a lot of people are saying white oak, and a lot of people are saying red oak. Unfortunately, the color is pretty ambiguous, at least on camera. It isn't the distinct pink that would give it away as red oak, and it isn't the distinct nutty brown that would give it away as white oak. I'd wager red, as red has a wider fluctuation in color range in my experience, so the lighter color makes me lean that way. Also, white oak tends to have so much ray fleck that it's hard to miss even in boards that aren't quarter sawn, which I'm not seeing here. Then again, it could be another type of oak rather than one of our eastern American domestic varieties, since we don't know the origin.
@SothpawDesigns
@SothpawDesigns 5 ай бұрын
I agree that it's oak. I'm leaning towards white oak, because the red oak that I've used seems to have a looser grain, but I'm still not an expert at most grains. I can spot cedar and walnut easily, because both are very common in my area, and am getting better at recognizing oak and maple, but most others befuddle me.
