My mum was a professional dancer and worked with Eric and Ernie before they went on tv. She said they were on the verge of giving up their act. She said they were lovely. The Morecambe and Wise show were huge over here in the UK. The Christmas specials were part of everyone's Christmas day. They were fantastic. They used to perform plays that Ernie was meant to have written. Superstars all wanted to appear on the show. They had a long running joke with a famous tv presenter/singer called Des O'connor. They loved to send him up about his music so he would often appear in their shows. Try the 'Andre Previn' sketch, or Andre Preview as they kept calling him. Andre is a world famous musician.

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ernie Wise, he lived on my Police beat and on Christmas Day he would purposely set off the intruder alarm at his house, this necessitated a visit by the police. On arrival Ernie and his wife would wish us ‘merry Christmas’ and offer us a mince pie and a hot toddy (non alcoholic of course) They were a charming couple and very supportive of the Police. Happy memories!

Eric’s mother was their first manager, she was the one who pushed Eric and Ernie to work together when they were still teenagers. They were both very close friends, even when they got married and had kids, the families were so closely connected that Ernie was basically seen as an uncle to Eric’s three children. They never had a moment of animosity, the only time there was a bit of strain was in the late 60s. Morecambe and Wise were actually part of the British Invasion, they appeared three times on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’, and were close to making it big in America, which was what Ernie always wanted, but Eric halted those plans because he didn’t like flying, he wasn’t happy with the thought of having to start their careers all over again, after how many years it had taken them to get established in Britain and then his heart attack happened, so any prospect of flying was made close to impossible after that. Before his sudden death in 1984, Eric was considering ending the partnership, because he was becoming dissatisfied with the quality of work in their latest series, plus he had his 2nd heart attack just before they started working on their new show, but because he loved Ernie and knew how much Ernie loved performing, he couldn’t bring himself to mention it.

Nick, you are one of the American reactors to nail Eric Morecambe's name. His birth name was Eric Bartholomew and took his stage name from his home town, the seaside resort of Morecambe in Lancashire. He met Ernie Wiseman during WW2 and shared digs. The two soon became very close friends, and with Eric's mother Sadie's encouragement started to develop a double act. Eric started to have heart trouble, and had had two heart attacks and corrective surgery, and in 1984, just after completing a comedy retrospective for charity with friend and comedian Stan Stennett, and had said his goodbyes to the audience, collapsed offstage with a third and this one was fatal. When looking at how active Eric was in the act, it is amazing to think that this man suffered heart problems. I hope you sample some more of the lads work. They were comedic genius.

A friend of mine had been a manager at a bank branch in London. One day, a young guy walked in around lunch-time, intent on a stick up, just like this. The particular lady teller had had a lousy morning, and simply looked at him & told him to 'F&ck Off !!'. The would be robber looked sheepish, turned round, and just walked out.

I used to work in a prison. One of the inmates was ‘not the full ticket’ as we used to say. Apparently he had held up a bank armed with a water pistol, saying “Hand over the money or I’ll shoot.” She didn’t. He shot her with water. The security guard arrested him immediately. 😂😂😂

Morecombe and Wise met when they were kids when they were both kid acts and it was Eric Morecombe's mother's idea to have them do a double act. When they first had their television act it wasn't a success and one of the critic's wrote: Television, the box that they buried Morecombe and Wise in. They did come back though and became one of the favourite double acts and their Christmas Specials were an highlight of every Christmas. They did do some shows in the US, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show a number of times. In fact Ernie Wise wanted to stay in the US but Morecombe didn't and so they didn't stop in the US even though they could have been successful in the US. Morecombe had several heart attacks which was another reason why they only did Christmas Specials and he would succumb to his final heart attack after doing a charity appearance for a friend when he collapsed and died shortly after coming off stage. Wise almost completely retired, although he would appear sometimes and was in some shows and films. There is a documentary film about their lives. If I can find it and the name of it I will leave at least the name of it in a comment below. have a look at their Mastermind, Singing in the Rain and Andre Previn sketches as well as their mini 'shows'.

Eric & Ernie started working together as children and Eric's Mother used to chaperone them as they travelled around the country, pre. their TV days. They grew to be more like brothers than work colleagues and remained very close until Eric's death. They still hold the record for the largest UK TV audience ever for a light entertainment show, their 1977 Christmas Special. Over half of the UK population watched it. They are still loved today, years after they both died, because they were so warm and generous.

I would like to echo the recommendations of others and suggest the Andre Previn Sketch. They worked with many high profile celebrities and Previn was the conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, so a very serious musician. Eric Morecambe was a perfectionist and a stickler for rehearsing sketches to within an inch of their lives. However, Andre Previn was an extremely busy man and was unable to set the time aside for rehearsal, but assured them that he had memorised the script. This caused Eric a lot of anxiety. You can almost spot the moment in the early part of the sketch that he realised it's going to be okay when Andre Previn delivers a line perfectly and Eric Morecambe acknowledges it enthusiastically.

I’ve been pushing M & W to you guys for ages now. So many great sketches/shows for you to see. All good, clean fun with no profanities. The Andre Previn sketch, the musical numbers parodying Hollywood musicals, the funny (but meant to be serious) plays that Ernie Wise (the shorter one) wrote, which attracted so many famous guest stars to play in them. So much great stuff. The boys are slightly different from The Two Ronnies in that they don’t act in their shows separately as Barker and Corbett do, but the humour of both duos is pretty much the same. So if you like one, you’re likely feel the same about the other.

' Mr Preview ' sketch is fabulous. And Glenda Jackson. You have to remember that these two were both considered very serious, respected and very high brow so Eric and Ern's treatment of them was so much funnier. When Eric Morecambe had his first heart attack and was in hospital, Des O’Connor (who was a good friend despite being the butt of their jokes) asked the audience at his next show to pray for him. Eric heard about this, and told him that those half-dozen prayers probably made all the difference! 😊 Eric and Ernie were perfectionists, and would start rehearsing their Christmas show in August. It’s thought the stress of this contributed to Eric’s heart problems. Try to find the full version of their Andre Previn / Grieg’s Piano Concerto sketch from the 1971 Christmas show (starting with Ernie and Andre Previn in front of the theatre curtains) - because of Previn working in the US they couldn’t rehearse this, and Eric was worried - you can see when Previn ad-libbed “I’ll go get my baton - it’s in Chicago!” was when he realised this was going to be a classic!

I once heard a (supposedly) true story on the radio which happened in America, can't remember where exactly, but it was in 'small town USA' somewhere. A man walked into a bank and demanded the cashier fill his bag with money. Having done so, he left the bank, walked around the corner, took his mask off, and walked back in to the same bank and asked to pay off his overdraft, with the same cash he'd just robbed from them. Not surprisingly he was arrested.

Look for their sketch with orchestral conductor Andre Previn as a special guest. BTW, some comedy duos can work together for years, as did these two. Others cant do it because they get annoyed with each other (Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis couldn't stand each other by the end of their partnership, for instance). And - from personal experience - remembering song lyrics isn't automatic! It takes work!

Some of their sketches were based around the premise that they lived together, absolutely nothing to do with being gay at all, they were just "Morecambe & Wise" and you couldn't have one without the other. Yet at a time when it would have been frowned upon under any other circumstance, they got away with sketches where they appeared in bed together on TV. Something that would be a definite no-no at the time, yet no one complained or thought anything about it, it was just part of the comedy and nothing else was inferred.

You should watch their Andre Previn sketch, their sketches with Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Glenda Jackson etc. Also their 'Jungle Book' sketch and many more.

Another couple of Morecambe and Wise suggestions are Big Spender, Dame Shirley Bassey, The Banana Boat Song, Jungle Book and Side By Side with Dame Glenda Jackson who won 2 Oscars after appearing on their show ❤ Can I also suggest Tommy Cooper and Dick Emery.

Great reaction! *Morcambe & Wise - Mastermind* is even better than *The Two Ronnies - Mastermind* OK, maybe not better, just very different and difficult to compare. Both sketches are exquisite! Of course, it would be helpful to be familiar with Mastermind, a knowledge-based show for intellectuals, i.e., masterminds. Enjoy! Thanks!

They started as child performers in the 1930s both were child stage performers who met and clicked and had success Eric's mother he is the one with glasses was managing him and Ernie's mother was taking care of her husband so Eric's mum traveled and managed and cared for them both.. As adults they lived separate lives when not working Eric was all about the performing and being funny Ernie did a lot of the writing and management for the duo. They were noted for their insistence on rehearsing to get the performance spot on for timing and action.

There has been a number of comedy duos in Britain and elsewhere stretching of decades , you had some in the states like Abbot and Castello , in Britian its quite common , a number of them you havnt discovered yet. Morecambe and Wise probably have hundreds of hours of sketches and skitts

These were an old music hall act that transferred to a TV double act in their own show... Try Cannon and Ball, Hale & Pace even Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, although they were better known for their part in "The Goons" and their show "The Goon Show"..

Just to correct you, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were NOT in The Goon Shows - Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe were!

@@phillipridgway8317 You're right but you forgot Micheal Bentine... I'm not sure why the Goons came to mind, I still think they were part of a crew/team.
