Everyone is panicking about cryptocurrency.
We’re going to unpack what’s happening for you, by looking at the fallout of a different market crash.
So let’s go back to January 2009.
President Obama had just been inaugurated and the whole world was reeling from the 2008 financial crisis.
And the banks, which caused all this, were only saved by a taxpayer funded government bailout.
That same month, the very first block of bitcoin was released by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, with this cryptic message in the code:
The Times January 03 / 2009 / chancellor on brink of second bailout.
A clear sign: cryptocurrency was created, at least in part, as a reaction to the financial crisis and bailouts.
At the time progressives and crypto folks seemed to agree:
Traditional financial institutions created a corrupt system that benefited a small set of wealthy elites and excluded the rest of society.
But they split in how they responded:
Meanwhile: cryptocurrency advocates believe the solution is less government, and less regulation, so they simply built a parallel financial industry.
And they did it all while promising working class investors super charged returns in a fairer, more equitable financial system where anyone could get ahead.

How often do people have to learn this? In a truly free, unregulated system, the strong exploit the weak. You'd think anybody who opens a history book and reads about the industrial revolution would learn this lesson and never forget it. The working class can only thrive where the power of the rich is aggressively reined in by governments and unions.

It's always fun to be reaffirmed of what the capitalist system really stands for. P2P technology, at it's start (original P2P technologies like Bittorrent), was deemed evil and the enemy of capitalism everywhere, because it was actually providing average people with valuable goods for free (or low cost if you count the tech needed to use it). But as soon as P2P (carrying crypto) is giving zero real value to the public, but just spilling millions/billions of dollars in wealth into the hands of extremely rich people? NOW it's a golden technology that deserves defense and should be a "staple" of a "burgeoning capitalist economy". Right... of course... I think we all get the picture more or less now. Help public = bad, help billionaire = good. Thanks capitalism!

As soon as "institutional investors" got into the crypto game, everything went downhill. It is like they are actively trying to fuck regular folks over. These "market makers" are just a cabal of cynical greedy sociopaths at the helm of corporate/government power. We literally cannot distinguish between academia from corporate interest, media, nor government bodies. They are all intertwined in a web of revolving doors. A treasury secretary in the U.S can go to being a lobbyist, professor, "consultant", or paid media "contributor" for major "news" networks and back to government within a span of 15 years. They can traverse the multiverse of US hegemonic power. There are people who have been fundamental to shaping policy and narratives since the 70s, be it they fuck up monumentally but still retain their status or better yet get a cushier job.

If I’m left holding Terra Luna or Bitcoin… what do I have? What does it “do” for anyone? It’s’ ENTIRE purpose is to be sold to someone else. I’m OK, in fact I am in favor of private currency, but it Has to be backed by something and it Has to be stable and fungible, And by stable I mean resistant to inflation and deflation. I think that is ideal and I think it can be done, but not with these fake cryptocurrency’s that are not backed by anything. The idea of the gold standard, it’s not so quaint. I trust Walmart dollars Way more than any of this crypto shit. Never owned crypto, probably never will, some of my friends made a lot of money on it. Maybe I’m the dummy, but, for sure, this is not the answer to Fiat currency. Both are bad

"we're all gonna ride the market to the top". If that's what you believe, then you don't know what a market is. Its all a closed loop, the only reason it goes up is cause people want to buy into it, and it goes down when they don't. The only way to make money is to hope that some sucker will buy it from you, just before it crashes. and thats just their bad luck. always a winner and always a loser.

Sadly the majority are those who bought crypto far too late for too high a price with money they couldn't afford to begin with. It's sometimes referred to as "a greater fool" theory. (If you were foolish enough to buy a pig in a poke, then surely a greater fool will buy it from you at a higher price.) Note: no goods are produced. When people use a high proportion of electrical grid output to "mine crypto," what are they ACTUALLY PRODUCING, beside carbon dioxide? Distributive computing for black hat hackers? Brute force attacks? Access to the miner's personal data, contacts, etc.? Pyramid schemes like this have been going on for centuries. Look up "Tulip Mania" for an example.

This is good. Crypto is purely speculation. You can't make money in speculation without cycles of panic and mania. Inexperienced "investors" (Bros) are pretty easy to predict. Without swings how would investor move money out of Bro pockets into their own? That's the value of crypto and it's generated a lot of money for investors who understand speculation by inexperienced Bros.

It wasnt about bailing out just the banks, if they didnt do what they did in 08, the commercial paper market would have failed. Peoples paychecks across the country wouldnt be issued, as well as a whole host of other issues. It wasnt about just the banks themselves and their employees, if the investment banks were allowed to fail it would have caused a domino effect that would have knocked out many different markets, look how the automakers almost went under... the fact that we didnt throw anyone in jail or make sure it didnt happen again is the real crime.

@@TheTroutyness really doesn't make crypto less of a ponzi scheme. It uses the money of current investors to pay out past investors, and that has to end somewhere. There's no compelling reason to hold crypto - as it generates no dividend, and there isn't actually any kind of economic activity behind it, like stocks ( which can also be akin to a ponzi scheme in many cases ).

@@leopheard that's absolutely not true. For instance, you can buy a dividend stock, which has an actual rate of return, not paid out by new investors. That's not a ponzi scheme, nor is it based on pure speculation. Crypto is.
@leopheard

@@gwils7879 Yes it is 😆 where does the rate of return come from?? And no, crypto can be used for staking and that is entirely not paid for by new investors. If crypto is a Ponzi scheme then there's no way you can honestly tell me that the stock market isn't 😂

Bollocks. Just yesterday I put my life savings into a gif of a cat playing the piano minted into a non fungible token. That Vic Chaos fella who sold me on it was mighty charismatic, he even said the proceeds would go towards funding the research of professor Kenneth McCormack. He said buying a popular nft even at currently inflated prices would still be a great investment when they’re guaranteed to be doubling in value every year, except when they don’t.

@@unstoppableExodia why were you willing to look at everything but the board leader? If I'm guessing I'd say maybe you thought you had missed the ground floor entry? If Bitcoin was at its all time high, I can see how you might have felt that way. Notwithstanding, a little research would have shown you that BTC is 50 to 70 % volatility store of value through its cycles_but with analog trend always upwards over the long term. Think buying Amazon Sep 4th 2018 only to watch it slip 25% by late Dec of the same year. Then increase 1000% in the years following. We don't need to say how many people back Sept if that year thought they had missed the ground entry. Or those who sold out at 25% loss after buying the local top. Bitcoin is sort of like that. But if you're secure enough to weather the volatility you'll realise later how fortunate a position you were in to have a little nest egg and the foresight to plant a seed in the winter. #Bitcoin(ers) are like that.
