Hey Wanja, I've been following your videos for a long time but have only recently subscribed. I just wanted to post this comment as a thank you for all of the great material you've made public. I have a solo BM project but I can't yet play drums, I'm using your videos as practice, and they have helped me a lot already. Once again, thank you very much - I wish you well and good luck with your own projects.

I still can remember you said the advice to be able to play your set without monitors in person to me. It was in like 2015 in the Platform Theatre in Groningen. It was the second gig ever of my band, Tsjuster. I'm still holding on to that advice, so thanks for that! Turned out usefull in a couple of gigs haha.

Yes, this is the mistake I make. I learn the songs at home, but I rely too much on the vocals and guitars to tell me when to change, so when I do band rehearsal I sometimes forget what to do because I can't hear anyone else.

Very insightful as a video,appreciate it a lot Wanja :) Worst part for me is to warm up my ankles before a show,I like my pedals to have a heavy feeling so this brings a lot of problems...most of the times you 're not allowed to touch anything on the drum because it is rented specifically for the drummer of the headline band,or you may not have the time required to do so.I had the joy to play along with Hate's drummer Pavulon,but the thing is he is really tall so everything on the set was adjusted to his needs.
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
If you need to change anything on the drumset just do it, don't ask and nobody will complain. When you finisehd your gig just help the other drummer adjusting everythin back to his settings. And if you have problems with the time just make your bandmates assist you. Especially singers often have not much to set up and while you are adjusting the toms your singer can start putting your cymbals in place for example. And regarding the warm up - maybe you can just tap on the ground with your feet to get the muscles warm and if that doesn't work well you can also put your pedal against a sofa/case/bassdrum pad/whatever backstage and warmup there.

Hey, Wanja! Do you have a video on tuning? Do you tune the toms to specific notes and fixed intervals between toms, for example, in 3rds, 4ths or 5ths? Or just tune them individually to their lowest note?
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
No, actually I am not very good at tuning. I use a tension watch and just tune them until they sound acceptable to me. In most of my videos the toms haven't been tuned in ages ;)

Great video, very informative. How difficult is it adapting to someone else's drum kit?
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
It heavily depends on how different that kit is from yours. With time and experience it becomes easier to adopt to different kits.

How do you do the set up for your laptop and possibly hearing the music with the other band members?
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
I use the laptop only for clicktrack and samples (orchestral elements, intros etc). I only hear click and samples with my in ears and the rest is up to the monitoring on stage.
@suggoz

And dont over rehears! Cant stress that enough. To play the set list over and over again will make you forget and you will loose that little edge on stage. Drummers often knows the songs best anyway, This is the last and the most importent tip. HAVE FUN! If you play wrong, how cares? Just go and drum and have fun with it!

In my experience I play better the more I practise the set. When I am at the point where everything runs on autopilot, THEN I can focus more on putting soul, energy, whatever you want to call it into my performance. But this may be different from person to person.

Hi Wanja! When should one buy a double bass pedal if one wants to play metal? Like is it necessary for him to be in advanced level in single pedal drumming before taking up double bass?? Please make a vid on that or at the least please reply to this:)
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
Many non-metal drummers will probably advice you to become good with a single pedal before you start with a double pedal but I think it doesn't really matter. As soon as you have learned to play some basic rock beats you can also start with double bass ;)
@prateekyadav9811
@prateekyadav9811 6 жыл бұрын
Ah! Thats comforting to know :) I was thinking the same but was unsure since I dont have the experience to boot haha. Anyway, good to know. I thought focusing on single pedal would make it easier for me to just neglect the left foot

how to setup drum triggers live. and some advices
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
The most important thing is to make sure there is enough dampening material inside the bass drum. When you don't hit too soft and your threshold setting is high there should be no problems.

Schlagzeug, Micros, Trigger?

@DiePixelkrieger 6 жыл бұрын

@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
Da muss man einfach pragmatisch denken!

Is it okay to change/adjust other people's set? and how much?
@wanjanechtangroeger
@wanjanechtangroeger 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is okay as long as you don't have totally absurd ideas about it. Only change what you really need to change to play a good performance and don't waste time and nerves on trying to decide if tom number 2 should be one inch more to the left or right.

Understood, one more question Do you use a metronome/click track while performing live? Is it helpful and do you recommend using one? Or is it a distraction and it's better just to practice to a metronome beforehand?

Depends on what and how much I practise. Also I (almost) never break the sticks - at some point they just become too light and happens usually after 2-4 weeks.
