What do you get when a Relief Society president, stake Young Women's counselor and exmormon record a podcast episode? You'll have to listen and find out! My mom and sisters (active LDS) join Girlscamp today and we talk about all the ways we navigate our mixed-faith family dynamic. We discuss doctrinal beliefs around degrees of heaven, how they felt when I told them I'd left the church and what they make of this podcast.

Thanks for this episode. After leaving, my nephew was going to be baptized. I texted my brother to coordinate planning so we could drive to celebrate him (even if we don't agree with everything else); like you said, it is a milestone. My brother replied that my life choices exempted our participation in the event. I was so hurt and upset. I thought that as family we were more than that. I don't understand how you turn family away from an event that is open to the public. I don't understand how as someone who follows Christ, you turn others away from spiritual experiences. (I don't talk openly about my views of the Church and have even attended Church functions with family in the past.)

Feel like this would make a good format in general. mixed-faith families coming and having a discussion with each other. having to navigate that space after leaving the church, it comes with such unique and unusual difficulties but also joys (for some at least)

Unfortunately my “coming out” to my parents was wayyy worse than I could have imagined. It’s nice to see the healthy and loving relationship you have with your family.

Great episode but I can still hear how your family (like others) has some shelf items they are ignoring. It will all work out in the after life is a common thread of TBMs with those same shelf items. Still glad that they are understanding and accepting.

Thank you, this is such an important episode! This perspective from your family was so healing to hear. It’s one thing for me as an exmo, to put on my TBM hat and think about how I made my family feel when I left. It’s sooo much more to hear your family tell how it made them feel. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Wow, how lucky you are to have such intelligent and insightful family to let you think for yourself and live your life out of a high-demand religion. I'm really impressed by all of you regarding your openness, love and acceptance.

I loved Megan’s insight on the perspective of leaving the church but not being able to leave it alone

I love this. I love your podcast and have wondered a lot of these things while listening to you. Hearing comments about your family had me wondering, as mine does NOT work this way. So hard to hear when mine is so broken. But so beautiful to hear a more successful story.

I love this video 💕💕. I feel like everything these days is so divisive. Everyone is trying to be "right" instead of understanding. I love conversations with people that believe in completely different things, but they build a middle ground and keep a mutual respect for each other. I would love to see more kind, understanding conversations like this between Mormons/LDS and Ex-Mormons/Ex-LDS.

I think people comment on your stuff, yes because they are insecure @38:05 but also because when people leave the church they often lie about the church and their lives, and also forget so much basic logic that they can't help but point it out. You're going to say this sounds mean, But I'm not mean. It's not, it's just counter to the view you've taken.

Also as a parent. It never ceases to amaze me how dumb kids are. It's really true, I was told that by a neighbor once and didn't know what they where talking about (because I was a kid) now I do.

Can you give us an example about how people lie about the church and their lives after they leave the church? I'm just curious. Full disclosure, I left a long time ago and feel like being out of the church allows me to be more honest about who I am, what I do and don't do, etc, whereas I feel like church members have a lot of pressure to be a certain way, and therefore are more likely to feel ashamed and lie when they fall short of that standard.

@@nomadicam Yeah I'm sure your right. My kids lie to self protect. I do it as an adult as well. So your not wrong on the physic of it. I think the book Mormonism unveiled is a good example. Especially sinse its the founding for lies about the church. Half of the aphidiids in that book are from people that didn't live in Palmra at the time Joseph smith did. Hypocrisy is bad, and compliancy is also bad. People in the church should worry more about helping others and they'll find everything else align in their lives. Good luck!

Could you give 2 examples of post Mormon lies? They are there, but I wonder which ones you think are lies Side note: I used to think the same thing and then I went through the anti Mormon claims and 90% were verifiable. Mormon defenders focus on the 10% lies so it seems a lot more imbalanced.

@@Tres03 lies? It would have to be self deception, aka i believe when... and now don't. There is no verifiable proff that the Church is true or not. So good luck with that witch hunt
