Today, I unpack the Mormon-run "Ward Radio" hate episode about little old me! I discuss my reservations about snark content and then proceed to dive into a snarky episode of my own. But hey, I do it much better than they do. And I guess I've got to live up to my new "mean girl" title somehow.

Religion is not needed as a foundation for characteristics like kindness, charity, compassion. However, religion can and does create an Us vs Them environment which can then lead to hate and divisiveness. My most hateful relatives are also the most religious. It’s sad.

I sometimes want to shout this message from the mountaintops. Not only does it create "us" vs "them" but also "right" vs "wrong," "true vs false," and those judgements are cultural, whether anyone wants to believe it or not. I often find atheists more kind and generous than theists, because if you believe there is no judgement day, the time to feed the hungry, comfort the sick, love your neighbor is NOW. There will be no leveling the playing field in an afterlife. Don't be kind or generous because you're expecting a reward but because it is the right thing to do, period.

it is needed because you were taught what kindness, charity, compassion is and it all emanated from religious people creating those terms based on revelation from God and God's scripture.

@@harshitgarg419 all primates inherently have traits such as kindness, love, nurture, compassion, and empathy. Otherwise the species would go extinct. Female monkeys show all these traits to their new born infant monkeys. Destroying infant monkeys out of anger or negative traits would lead to extinction. Monkeys are not governed by any religion to obtain those positive traits.

As an ex Christian, I’ve listened to every single episode of Girlscamp, but I’ve never felt compelled to leave a comment until now. The grace in which you handled this is so admirable. What frustrated me the most was the criticism that you’re ungrateful. Just because the church has had some positive impact on your life, which you’ve acknowledged in MANY episodes, doesn’t mean that you should be barred from ever criticizing it. Institutions and people can be both helpful AND harmful at once, and I don’t get how someone can’t wrap their head around that nuance.

I have so many thoughts, but first of all, girl, you’re handling this with such grace. I could learn a thing or two from you. But also- I find it funny (idiotic) that they could hate on you for leaving a church and critiquing it even though you have privilege and “wealth” when the church asks its poorest members, people living in third world countries, to “donate” their ten percent. Even if you benefit from living in Utah and growing up Mormon, that’s doesn’t mean you can’t call out the Mormon church. That implies a bribery-level incentive to ignore harm in the church just because you had some positive opportunities. If a friend of mine got me a job or helped me pay for school or guided me through a particular part of life, but then I found out they were being homophobic, racist, sexist, protecting abusers, and dealing unfairly with their money (at the expense of others), I would no longer be their friend. You can be grateful for the church as part of your journey, and then you can outgrow it and be a part of better things. Also, how Christlike of a church podcast and it’s viewers to make fun of artificial things about you, constantly call you “hot” or talk down about your looks, all in the name of comedy. Sounds like they’re running out of ideas. Creative, funny, and important ones, at least.

20:00 ward radio and those kind of apologist… I feel they don’t really try very hard. Overall, the church is not true, but there are better avenues of thought, that could be more ‘faith promoting’ but would require more love, effort, and eloquence. Basically they would have to b more Christlike, and they don’t want to (but really, these things would also likely lead to leaving the church)

I will admit that I've never been a viewer/listener of Ward Radio... I am not LDS, never have been, but I follow a lot of ex-Mormon content for... reasons difficult to explain. I think it's easy to feel a sense of detached superiority when you encounter an off-the-wall, wild and absurd belief system that is _so_ (not so) different from the off-the-wall, wildly absurd belief system you were brought up with... so I want to be clear that I don't learn about LDS teachings just to tally up heresies or make fun of other peoples ' deeply held beliefs or something... as I mentioned, the reason formy interest is hard to put into words. That being said, I watched the Jubilee video with Carden (sp) and Kwaku in it, and their rhetorical style seemed emblematic of people who take pride in not challenging themselves intellectually. I get the sense - though this is a guess - that they avoid challenging themselves and hearing out conflicting opinions because taking people and ideas contrary to their own seriously is associated with submission or something... A lot of people impressed by themselves are very easily impressed. I admire your restraint in calmly examining their criticisms, I thought you treated some of them as much more "valid" than they were, a lot of their rhetoric by your description sounded quite a bit like the usual on/off pre-rehearsed talking points in would-be intellectual 'conservative' circles whenever they want to pretend that they have a criticism beyond spite when confronted with someone of whom they happen to disapprove.

@Catie_Joy
@Catie_Joy Ай бұрын
@@joshvaughan3403 I understand why you’d believe that (it’s certainly the idea presented by most politicians from center left to far right, and corresponding news orgs), but that’s not correct. Of course there are leftist and anti-fascist groups (not “antifa,” which at this point is mostly a pejorative used by the right to create a faceless bogeyman and discredit anti-fascist action) all over the US and around the world. There are also individuals who join with likeminded folks for protest actions and call themselves antifascists, who do the things that get reported in media (protest defense, wearing all black, punching white supremacists, blocking roads as a form of protest, etc.) that are credited to (or blamed on) “antifa,” but truly there is not a widespread “Antifa” organization. That’s a misconception that the right wing has very intentionally cultivated to foment the feelings of fear and disgust that tend to motivate their base, an effort that has encouraged members of that base to embrace increasingly fascistic ideas, candidates, and policies. And I agree with you @babywantsrevenge-antifascists are more welcoming than people tend to assume. If your values align with theirs they will see you as an ally, and maybe even as a super rad class traitor if you’re putting your privilege on the line to support others! Someone having a certain aesthetic or enjoying a certain kind of beverage or being from a cute cul-de-sac in the suburbs-that stuff is not relevant as long as you believe in standing up against the same oppressive systems.

I appreciate your thoughtful approach, but I have to strongly disagree with your point about Mormons being privileged. Within Utah and Southern Idaho, there is definitely Mormon privilege. Everywhere else in the country and the world, however, Mormons are marginalized. In fact, Mormons are a historically oppressed people in the United States. Most of us would experience a lot less otherization and gain a lot of privilege if we ceased to be Mormon.

This sounds a lot like a comment that an evangelical would make. The reality is evangelicals and Mormons are both the two most privileged and powerful groups in usa. They are the two groups that push policy and behaviour of oppressing, hurting& killing so many people. Neither are persecuted in this country, they just both like to deflect and tell themselves they are persecuted just because others stand up and stop y’all from persecuting others and commuting crimes. Like the treason and pedophila of Joseph smith, Brigham young , John Taylor etc. people asking y’all to stop discriminating, to stop pushing treason, is not you being “persecuted”

I get what you are aiming for but that is similar to saying “Catholics are marginalized” meanwhile they are directly supported by the oldest, wealthiest, most powerful Christian institution in the world. The exact same can be said about Mormons. They might represent a minority religion but they and their values are absolutely not marginalized. The things Mormons most value are the status quo and have been for a he majority of this country’s history. Mormons have legislative power so deeply rooted it has and continues to influence our laws on a national level. They literally used that power to change another state’s laws around gay marriage- a demographic of some of the most marginalized people in human history. Amongst Christians, maybe you can say they were marginalized at one point but nobody is out here trying to stop Mormons from being Mormon. The criticism is for the way Mormons treat everyone else. Bothering people trying to enjoy their Saturday by knocking on their door and telling them their religious beliefs are incorrect and here’s why, or doing the same to strangers on their way to work, does not make you persecuted. It doesn’t earn you the right to complain about the injustice of Mormon marginalization. Even if we played pretend and agreed that Mormons have been marginalized because of their persecution- what is this persecution? Do people hate Mormons simply for existing as another branch of Christianity? Or is it because they have a very long history of stepping on other people’s toes, nefarious deception, coercion, corruption, conspiracy, systematic abuse of every kind, mass slaughter, blatant racism and exclusion, manipulation, and so so so much more.
@kp6553

@@neurotika Catholics have been historically marginalized, to some extent, but they still have made major inroads into the corridors of power (multiple Catholic presidents, multiple Catholic Supreme Court Justices) while Mormons by and large are still excluded from those spaces. I'm not going to bother responding to your argument that "actually this minority group deserves to be marginalized because it's actually bad."
