Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp #agadmator Paul Morphy had everything necessary for success that one could think of. He had a wealthy family, was a hard worker, had an astounding mind, and was well liked by nearly all the people he knew. Yet throughout his life he was met with failure and sadness. His near perfect circumstances and tumultuous final year of life earned him the nickname by which he will forever be remembered, “The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.”
As most folks interested in Paul Morphy know, Charles Amédée de Maurian had been his best friend since childhood. Paul's father and Charles' father (also Charles) were both lawyers, judges and politicos in New Orleans and lived near and associated with each other. Alonzo Morphy and Charles Maurian the elder were witnesses to the marriage of Judah Benjamin, later the Confederate Attorney-General and Sec. of War, to Natalie Bauché de St. Martin. Paul and Charles went to school together in New Orleans and later in Moblie, Alabama. Charles has the magnificant distinction of having been the only person tutored in chess by Paul Morphy. Outside of Morphy, Maurian became the strongest player in the Crescent City. He founded and was first president of the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club in 1880 and edited the chess columns in the New Orleans Delta and later in the New Olreans Times-Democrat

Actually no. I used to crush my friends by giving them queen odds, in return for two moves in the beginning. After playing e4 d4, they would get their move. I used to gain the centre and won 19, drew 2 and lost 1

In fairness he is correct (albeit being very metaphorically loud about it) 5:22 blacks best defence is Kg8 here. This gets out of reach of the discovery. Nf5 can be met with Rxf5 and Nf3 can be met with Rf6 and whites queen can't take the pawn on g7. Black is therefore winning by his material advantage. Furthermore, when Qxg7+ is played, Qh8# is slightly faster.

It's always easy to say how much players "sucked" back then, but you have to remember that there was practically no theory compared to today. So, it's not a question of how "bad" Morphy's opponents were - it's more of how "good" Morphy was.

Others have pointed out that the long checkmate is unnecessary, but I'd like to point out that black is winning after Rh8+ (5:05 in the video). Black doesn't have to make an escape square for the king immediately because of the two tempi white's move order gives him. After Rh8+ Kxh8, Qh2+ Bh4+, Nxh4 black can use the tempo to move Kg8. Now if white persists in playing Nf5, Rxf5 clears the escape square for the king. Black will be losing the exchange, but he started with such huge odds that it makes no difference. Rf8 is a bad move, but it's bad because of Rh7 with a threat of doubling on the h-file with Qh2. The only move black has to stop this plan is giving up material with Bh4+. After Nxe4, black does have to move the rook to clear an escape square. If he moves Re8, then Qe2 renews the threat of doubling on the h-file, this time with Qh5. If Rf6, then Qh2 is winning. Black's best move is to start retreating the king with Kf8, but then Rh8+ wins the queen.

plot twist: it was a simultaneous exhibition and Charles was going for a checkmate with his knights on the other board on his right side

At 5:35, instead of Qg7+?? simply Qh8 is check mate! No need for super long combination....

How are you able to use the capture move at 2:40? The pawns are not diagonal.

i think you missed the mate in 1 Qh8 at 5.34 clock of your video..it was a side variation...you dont have to capture Qxg7+ which prolonged the mate..instead immediate Qh8 coz the knight is covering d7 square and the pawn is guarding e7 square.

The main mistake of Morphy’s opponent Morphy is shooting his pawns up the Board getting his Bishops Knight his one Rook and Queen all coming for Black’s King meanwhile Morphy’s opponent is tinkering around with his Knights on the Queen side of the Board once the Black Kings defense was shredded it was like the Floodgates were open seemed as if Morphy was simply toying with him I know you had said Black did not need to go after more pieces as he already has two pieces up but maybe he should’ve used that Bishop Rook and Queen to attack Morphy’s Kings defense he didn’t instead he’s going on horse rides Thanks for the Game Agadmator

Why did Black stubborned to still castle King side when he saw at least 3 white pawns rushing in that direction ??? Black King would have been much safer by managing a Queen side castle during the opening sequence.

At 5:34 wouldn't it be check mate if queen goes to the corner (h8) instead of capturing the pawn?
@dagnurd
@dagnurd 6 жыл бұрын
On the variation with the rook sac, you missed a faster mate.as you showed in the video, Rh8+ Kh8, Qh2+ Bh4, Nxh4 Rf6, Nf5+ Kg8, Qh7+ Kf8, happens, but then Qh8++ is checkmate immediately, instead of Qxg7, which should be significantly shorter.

Ben Finegold talks about how poorly people of Morphy's era played. This is an example of that. De Maurian not developing early and moving his knights way off to the side of the board ignoring center control are exactly Finegold's points.
