I love my Morakniv companion; best $20 I ever spent. I got to orange handle/sheath and wrapped the sheath with Paracord and bicycle inner tube bands which hold a small striker/signal mirror a small Bic lighter and a Ferro rod.

I've learnt more from every minute of this video than an hour of any other video. No wonder I heard about Mr. Kochanski long before having any idea what bushcrafting is.

That's true! However, he doesn't show any technique or details. The best sharpening video,I've found on KZfaq that shows all the proper techique and details, is this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oauhnrd5muCnhqM.html It's the same method I use. I ususally have to repair/sharpen, between 400 to 900 knives each year, only in 1 month, from mid April to mid May. I do it for living, both at my work and at home, where professionals, like Cooks,Chefs, Butchers, or Hunters, Farmers etc bring their knies to me. I literally sharpen thousands of knives each and every year, since the 90's. If I could be of any help, it would be my pleasure to help.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!! I have been trying to find someone who can teach me how to sharpen a knife and give understanding in all the different levels of sharpening. THANK YOU so much for showing this video. You explain and show on the wood exactly what I needed to hear. You have especially saved me a lot of money from having to buy sharpening tools and can buy sand paper and carpet tape. I never would have thought I could have used sand paper. A lot lighter with a metallic support piece. I will be reviewing this video a lot. I also know how to test if a knife needs sharpening. Wow. Finally. Thank you. THANKS AGAIN.

Thank You Mr. Kochanski, I could watch your videos all day. and I always pick up something new each time. Yeah it was one of your video's that got me to buy the Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool, it's to date one of my Fav's. Although I have others, I enjoy using it as I think how it would be in your hands and I try to duplicate that. You make it look so easy. I like the part where when you slice wood it's so smooth that you don't have to sand it. That's easy for you to say, that must of took you alot of years to beable to do that. When I try it's not that easy although I'm getting better. I don't go into the wilderness to survive in it like you did and prolly still do. But I like scouting new areas looking for fatwood, and having a snack and coffee on the open fire. So my knives are not that much of Scandi size Bush Craft Knives as much as I need a knife to make kindling (batoning). I also carry a Double Bit Hatchet and a Saw, and a 5"-6" Field Knife usually a Saber Vex Grind. Lately I've been carrying a Folding Slipjoint in a 440C Stainless (made in Solengin), what's your opinion on that type of steel, I notice I can save my edge on my primary knife (when whittling) and I also can use it for food prep. anyhow It's been a long time since I've seen one of your videos, and I'm very happy I was able to see this one, Thanx Mr. Kochanski, Your a very respected Bush Crafter, and I agree, Thanx.

Love watching Mr Kochanskis videos but I have one reservation - what if you dont live in a forest and you dont have access to basic materials?? What do you do then??

Say Heah Mors, I still use my vintage Frost Mora 840 Clipper MG. The Clipped has a shorter tang than the Companion which is a little more slender but longer, But the robust tang of the Clipper and with strategically placed hard plastic around it makes for a pretty string knife. So yeah, I have no fear using it in the bush.,,.

The only thing is I'm not a fan of stainless steel period. And I like useing Craytex strips they come in grits from 240-6000, they are rubberized diamond strips.

80% of the time your knife needs to be stropped. Go buy a strip of leather, a belts length is a good idea. Get a stropping compound (the green stuff is all you need) stick the top of the leather loaded with green compound (rub it on like a crayon, the life supply of it for like 10 bucks) into the top of your door and shut it. Run the knife backwards along strop like a butcher until you're satisfied with the cutting egde. You should only be taking off metal by sharpening with sandpaper/coarse stone if you have a chip or a pathetic knife angle. You can change an angle by stropping as well if you do it enough.

Rebel Justice sand paper can do exactly the same thing as a leather strop with compound. Stropping compound comes in different grits, just like sand paper. When you impregnate leather with a given grit of compound it is essentially the same as a fine sandpaper of the same grit.

Rebel Justice furthermore, the stropping Mr. Kochanski is discussing in the video (that is stropping without any compound on the belt) is a further step that is often neglected by many who use a strop impregnated with compound, and he explains well in the video what this extra step does for the added sharpness of a blade edge.

So in the Video about axes it says a good axes can supplement a knife or a saw. In this video subtitles "neither a saw nor an axe can supplement a good survival knife." (01:52). What is correct? btw great Video.

in short a good knife is paramount, you can do everything with a knife if need be but not with an axe or saw, having an axe or saw will save energy but if you only have one , have a good knife

I think it was a typo, supplant should be the proper term. heavy cutters and a task knife supplement each other well and pick up where the other falls short.

Tried to send an e-mail to Mors' website, but it wouldn't accept my normal e-mail address, so I'll ask it here. I am thinking of the Condor Bushlore as a very inexpensive, all around tool (Field Dressing, Skinning, wood work). Any opinions?

I've seen the knife and I think it would work well for your needs for all round camp knife. Remember a knife does not have to be expensive to work well. Over the years Mors and I have used inexpensive Moro on are course and never had failure.

Its weird. He leaves out details. Kinda doesn't describe things properly and leave out words in sentences. But I still learned a lot in this video. Stropping was the step I always left out. And now my knife is shaving sharp.

I don't buy for a second that you remove a burr by heating it, or hardening it There's no way you get enough heat to harden it. That takes about fourteen hundred degrees F. The sharpest chisels I've ever seen are made that way by peeling the burr off, and it does not take good edge along with it. If you sharpen uniformly, peeling the burr off leaves an edge that well above shaving sharp. Slow, cool stropping gets rid of a burr better than fast, hot stropping, though, as I said, hardening has nothing to do with it.

I'd say that they doesn't last even 2 hours of use, with the factory edge or any edge, as also I's say all mass produced knives, should be reprofiled and sharpened before first use (2-3 sharpening sessions, is the minimum if you want to learn, how that knife can perform, on both edge stability and edge holding abilities) but it's Mors, so I will only say, So long teacher, I'm really glad, that he confessed his biggest sin in front of public, on one of his last appearances. It happens with most old people, before they die and it's the most important thing, if you don't die before your time. What was that sin? He admitted that he made all this wonderful career, takinf advantage of Christians, who as he said, believed that the Apocalypse and what God revealed in it, to save US, made people seeking for how to "survive" It's Mors words, not mine. He literally admitted. that he took advantage of that, and that's where he found the idea, to become a survival Instructor. Now, why old people, usually confess their sins, just before they leave this world? The answer is the most logical one, it's because our creator, has revealed the Truth to us, and our soul, doesn't want to stay out of Paradise. Don't get confused, a real Christian believes in no religions. Christianity isn't a religion. Religions are Devil's traps. When someone says, he belongs to a religion, that means he/she, is worshiping the devil. That's also why, his dogs divided Christianity into different religions. The real Christian, as Christ said, is always under persecution, because it has nothing to do, with this worlds kingdoms, but with the next ones!! Be careful, the Marκ of thε beasτ is here. Accepting what they now enforce to you, is denying Paradise forever. It's not MY words, or opinion, it's what God himself has said, so we speak about FACTS and not opinions... BE careful, This is the END as the DOORS used to sing. If you want to save yourselves and your families, leave behind your old character. repent and accept the Truth, it's that simple. @@xderiwx All this about "Survival" has been manipulated purposely,to turn people to materiasm and make us believe the lie,that it's the products and gear that are going to save us and not God and our repentance. That's 1 reason, why all products allover the world, have the 666 on the barcode. And that's why God warned us about that...and that's why Mors confessed in public,his sin. Sin is just a synonym to the word mistake. The best confession,isn't to a priest and thus God,but to the persons you have cheated or harmed. That,guarantees a 100% forgiveness from God! I've seen far too many knife blades ruined by long term use of sandpaper to ever sharpen my knife this way. It's no harder to carry a good stone than it is to carry sandpaper, and a good stone will never damage a knife blade. Even if I did use sandpaper, I wouldn't use 600 grit. That's equivalent to a course Arkansas. A fine Arkansas is 1000 grit, and a translucent or black is about 1200 grit. I'm not going to use course at all, if the knife has any sort of edge. It's rare to even need medium. You shouldn't use a hone until after you sharpen the knife as sharp as it can get, and then use it for a while. A strop should never take more than twenty to thirty strokes. A Scandi, regardless of angle, should always, always have the entire bevel sharped each time. You can't hone a knife with sandpaper. Honing can only be done with a honing steel. If you're removing any metal at all, you are NOT honing it, you're sharpening it. Honing means straightening bent edge. That simply is NOT a hone. It amazes me how someone who's been around knives for decades could not know what honing is, but Mors doesn't know, or he's have a honing steel here, other than a piece of old sandpaper.
