Candles are very often overlooked. I've actually made it through a pretty miserable night before with just a few tealite candles under a poncho to produce some extra heat while it kept the freezing rain off of me.

Years ago in the Army’s Ranger School, I was always cold & wet in the North GA Mountains. When we got a break, usually early in the morning after moving all night, I’d put a heat tab between my legs while sitting cross-legged on the ground. Because the heat tab was toxic, I’d drape my poncho around me and seal it at the neck. The steam would roll off as that small heat tab dried my clothes and me.

Yep, candles are under rated for heat. Came back the university dorm a day early before they turned the heat back on, lit four candles, it was warm enough. Told my soil science professor about it, he didn't believe it helped heat.

Though these suggested additions won't all fit in the pot: (1) spare pair of glasses if you're useless otherwise, (2) Morse code "cheatsheet" (credit-card size, covered in clear packing tape to keep dry), (3) bankline for shelter-building and other uses where moderate strength but long length is the dominant need (also carry a shorter length of 550 cord to complement it, since both are useful), (4) a stick or two of fatwood for tinder (max you'll pay is US$2.2/pound on Amazon). Also, I recommend a serious signalling mirror (source: Howard Glass), versus the hard-to-aim el-cheapo substitutes.

The whole idea of wrapping yourself in mylar never made sense to me. Cool to see a thorough explanation for this concept. This is what I love about watching Mors talk. He'll take a straightforward concept and teach you a million things he's learned about it nobody else would've even thought to research. Completely changed the way I think about learning survival skills.

I carry duct tape in a flat pack. From a 1 gallon or 1/2 gallon, plastic milk jug, cut a flat strip about 2” wide X 4”-5” long. Wrap, say, 30’-50’ of tape around the strip. Fold over the end 1/4” onto itself so it is easy to remove a strip. Make several such packs for storing in several different dry bags. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Awesome video! RIP Mors! Just ordered my “Mors Pot” from Amazon. Since Four Dog no longer sells the original pot, I ordered the Pathfinder pot. Almost identical to the pot Mors used. Can’t wait to get it and put together the kit! My only problem with the kit Is the cheap, orange 6 in 1 “ survival tool”….simply junk! Otherwise, great video and information!
@thomasmusso1147

True. Those 'multi-purpose' combos are often cheap junk. Best to source each item individually .. Compass - Whistle - Waterproof Container - Matches - Striker - Mirror. Besides being able to pick each item specifically for one's needs, as Mors mentioned, lose the gimmick and one loses six items.

I found an old aluminum camping pot that has all of the same features, a bale, butterfly handles, secure lid, and a pouring spout. And is about the same capacity. Very light weight. Just needs a little cleaning and it will be good as new. You would amazed what you can find for bushcraft in antique stores. I found an entire nesting cook camp kit.

Add a very large brew kit. Tea's, instant coffee, hot chocolate's. Lots of suger's as well. A good hot brew works wonders for your moral. Don't use all the spare space on paracord. Screw your nut and add as many high calorific food bars as you can get in there. Nothing under 120 KCal per bar. 2 bars and a hot chocolate loaded with sugar will give you around 350 to 400 KCal. That's like a good breakfast.
@ronnibuck1504
@ronnibuck1504 7 жыл бұрын
The most important survival tool is your brain. Your brain needs food to function. Anyone can make cordage from bark, vines, leaves, reeds, etc with a little bit of knowledge. Take maybe 50 ft of paracord (enough to make a shelter) and if you need more than that make cordage while you're sitting at a fire. It will keep you occupied, which has a calming effect and actually boosts confidence when you can make another 50 feet of cord in an hour or so. Buckwheat groats is an awesome food source that can be prepared by cooking or simply by adding water and waiting 4 or 5 hours without heat. Take a kilo of grouts, a few tins of canned pork (high in fat) and a few packages of dehydrated soup mix and you have 3 days of food eating normally and can ration it to a week if need be. Having food keeps your moral up and allows you time to concentrate on other things while conserving energy from trying to collect food in the wild, which isn't as easy as most people believe. Anyhow, that's just my opinion of what works for me even though it doesn't fit into the 2 kilo theme of this video. If you're making a "Five C's" pack (cutting, cover, cordage, combustion, container) and have room left over, fill the voids with food.
@thomasmusso1147
@thomasmusso1147 8 ай бұрын
I like your choice of foodstuff. Buckwheat is a definite inclusion as with the dried soup mix .. 'OXO' / Meat Cubes too. If really pushed, I would ditch Coffee and Tea, despite their morale-inducing / stimulant properties .. and replace them with meat cubes / mix, at the very least, the fat and salt content being more beneficial. That food choice will ensure that (as Ragnar Benson once commented on his, similar emergency food stash which was for a group of four for one month), "one will not get bored and eat everything in three days" 😏.

In 20 ° & less temperature the heat from the candle you can only get what is going straight up from the candle and only maybe 6" above, and about an 1" to the sides to feel any heat. Have tried the candle a couple times in 20 degree & less and the only heat you get is just inches above the candle. It WILL NOT warm up a tent or car in these low tempts. You have to hover over the candle to get any heat.

A tip for bandaids. Finger bandaid or other types, cut lengthwise almost to the pad and you end up with a much more useful bandaid. Acts a like a knuckle bandage.

Flat white paint will reflect better than mylar. Don't believe me? Ask the indoor growing community who will point you in the direction of scientific testing of different materials. There are super expensive indoor hydroponic grow materials that is better, but mylar is as low as alfoil for reflectivity, which is very, very bad. So a literal white sheet will reflect far more. That said using mylar as a blanket will be better because it's plastic so it releases nothing, it's non permeable. But by the same token a mylar sheet painted white, or a white sheet of plastic, yeah. You get my point. Edit: The sticky side of duct tape is NOT an antiseptic, wtf. That's the stupidest claim I've heard watching 'survival gurus'. You better pray you brought antibiotics if you follow this advice.
@darrylviljoen6227
@darrylviljoen6227 2 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting claim about the white plastic, could you throw some sources my way? also for the tape, i think the adhesive is mildly toxic so that may give it an antiseptic effect, kind of like silver.
