@@AngelTheAndroid5436 yes in the original timeline during the 3D era Kenshi frees him from what remained of Shao Kahn’s control and as a sign of gratitude he taught Kenshi some telekinetic moves while aiding Liu Kang's spirit into freeing his friends from Onaga’s control (to which Ermac succeeded in his canon deception ending) and finally during the final battle of Armageddon he joined the forces of light alongside all the heroes.

Since the “governing” soul of Ermac is King Jerod, his rugged sense of heroism is far from out of place, Protagonist Ermac is back, baby!

I'm going to sound like a nerd, but technically, the protagonist is a hero. The protagonist is the person you follow in the story and can also be a villain. For example, Joker is our protagonist, but he's not a hero, but I get what you were saying.
