Used to use a modified bug zapper over a outdoor pond. Took the bottom off, hung it over the pond with a timer connected to the power. Zapped bugs and fed the fish at the same time.

Last year I purchased one of those black flag large electric bug zapper‘s. The unit worked great and after one night the unit was covered with flying insects. I used to tap my unit with my hand to knock the bugs loose; but I noticed that not all of the insects dropped off the Electric mesh or wiring system. So, I used my battery operated leaf blower and that did the job very well.

I have two Black Flag bug zappers that I purchased just this summer. With my previous zapper (8-10 years old) I used to take it down and blow it out with compressed air maybe once a week. It finally dawned on me that I could get just about as good a result cleaning it with an inexpensive leaf blower. That way I can clean it in place and it just makes it much more convenient, especially with two units now.

The best way to trap mosquitos and other small flying bugs is a box fan. I’ve tried the rest and nothing comes close. I’ve used mosquito magnets, 2 types. They cost about 40bucks a month to run. My box fan ran a couple of years in the south Florida rain before it quite working. You simply place window screen on the back. Buy one from Lowe’s or Depot and your ready, add screen and your done. Stupid bug zappers don’t last. I don’t think I ever had one last a year and the bulbs constantly go out.

Yes, Flowtron Zapper is better than the zapper you showed, but both just work on moths, and not effective for mosquitoes. But the DynaTrap you have is more effective for mosquitoes, its paint react to the heat of the uv lights releasing Carbon Dioxide which is very effective as a mosquito attractant, once mosquitoes are close, they get sucked in and trapped.

Cleaning a bug zapper; Unplug it first from the electrical outlet. Have you tried putting a baby bottle scrubber or even a old toothbrush or narrow long bottle cleaners in the pet section of the PetSmart or Hardware Store tape wrap it's on a very long cleaned up stick. Measured length of the stick cut to the length that is needed. Put inside the bug zapperr and bush off the bugs and the wire mesh inside the zapper onto old newspaper for disposal. Dental floss wrapping tie on some antibacterial cloth type wipes on an and of a long stick to wipe off any excess debris off wires.. Do another stick with the wipes for as many cleanups on another sticks as needed to clean some more. Let it dry really well couple hours or enough time to allow moisture to dry off of the unit in the sun prior to any use.

My dad was injured and his pool is uncovered but not "open" (no shock or chlorine yet) because he needs to redo the liner. Would mineral oil be good for it to stop the mosquitos breeding? We read dawn soap could help because it's wildlife safe but he'd need something like 8 gallons of soap for that.

I own 2 dynatraps bought on qvc that cover 0.5 acres each and a bug zapper. The new dyna traps release a scent that attracts mosquitos, i add an attractant to both to be on the safe side. The zapper attracts bugs with the blue light, i also add an attractant to draw in more bugs. I will be using ryobi's misting/fogging machine to kill bugs along by backyard fence line.

Doc, have you had any experience with a trap or something for wasps? (No, not the Anglo-Saxon type!) We have both paper wasps and mud daubers here, and I was stung twice without provocation a few weeks ago. I tried a trap that uses a 2 liter soda bottle with these entrance holes they are supposed to be able to get in, but not out. Our wasps must be so stupid they can't figure out how to get in!
@akbychoice
@akbychoice 5 жыл бұрын
Rick Ferris there is a method using a tub with soapy water nearly full. Placing a board over the tub with some meat attached to the underside of the board just and inch or so above the water level. The wasps go for the meat then fall into the water and drown. A guy in YT did s video on it.

hey i live out in the country and my bug zapper has gotten so full of dead bugs that it was no longer zapping so they should not be a fire hazard as mine has never caught fire. as for that mesh yes it is a pain to clean out but without the mesh you do not kill any bugs. if you buy a bag of bamboo skewers they are real cheap and those are what i use to clean mine out it takes some time if you let it get as clogged as mine will get. got a new air compressor so this year going to try using a blow gun and see how that works for cleaning it.

Thanks for putting this video up, but I would caution against using these kinds of insect traps. The reason is that they don't just kill mosquitoes. They also kill other insects like flies, beetles and moths which are beneficial for pollinating plants, as you have shown in your video. By using these traps, you are harming biodiversity instead of helping it. It might be worth considering alternative methods.
@teathomas
@teathomas 3 жыл бұрын
What are the alternative methods? I’m allergist to mosquito bites and mosquitos are so bad outside my door that I can’t spend even 5 minutes outdoors without a lot of damage. I don’t want to kill anything but mosquitos. But it might be worth it for me just so I can not get hurt outside my own home.
