There's a human tendency to enter a new tribe and then make yourself the loudest, mostest version of that tribe to prove yourself. I'm sure there's some anthropological reason for it where our cavemen ancestors would change tribes by making the biggest kill. I've seen this in online groups where, say, this one guy totally wrapped himself in cancel culture by always looking for the next person who had a public fuckup and then bringing it to everyone's attention. Or he needed to split the latest talking points of whatever he believed in that week. We should probably call it Brian Griffin syndrome.

I'm an old school liberal and I read Chuck Dixon back in the day. I heard he was a conservative, so what? He wrote good stories and I didn't feel I was being preached to. I'm willing to bet most "woke" comics are either (I don't read new stuff unless by an older creator I love). A creator giving an interview where they say all kinds of woke stuff usually won't translate that well into a story. I take interviews with a grain of salt, those shouldn't ruin the comic for you. It's either hype, talking about what a character is inside or politics and half the stuff they say isn't going to be done. Just entertain us, give us action and adventure or intrigue. Having an issue to focus on drama used to be once in a couple of years worth of issues. BTW I've read Grant Morrison doesn't mind being called "he/him."

social media doesn't move the needle up or down. nothing that happens here makes a hit or crushes a run. nothing. if you're not doing it for the fun, you're deluding yourself. MOST fans don't give a crap about all this online battling.

I don't concern myself with sales, people's politics or what's going on with Twitter/X, etc. All I concern myself with is if something sounds interesting--then I'll buy it, if it gets to me when it's supposed to (I get my comics from an online distributor mostly) and whether or not it's good enough to continue reading/buying it.

I can confirm. Those on Tumblr that I follow are Rogue and Raven fans. I get some information about the Rogues comics. Not a peep about Raven stuff though. Nobody cares. We put more focus on Fan Art & Fiction than on the actual comic. Mind you Raven’s comic is usually the same story since her original first appearance. The Base line is pretty much Trigon tries to control Raven, Trigon for a time succeeds and then Raven gets free of Trigon’s influence and pushes Trigon back to his Realm. Rinse and Repeat. It’s a good storyline but what does it say about the company or Writers that this is literally the only story they write? Is it any wonder nobody who loves Raven reads her comics? If they’d done as they did with every other character. You’d probably have gotten more fans, but they didn’t. So now they have a popular character who’s not selling as much as she could, because they’re trying milk one particular story because of a single tv series. Anyway I can care and I can get upset but it doesn’t mean I can’t hope. Ironically DC comics is a company. A business man cares most about the bottom line. They’ll have to change eventually if they’re not already because money matters most. So I’m just gonna wait.

I avoid nearly all discussion about comics & manga now, I have 2 or 3 channels that I watch because the discourse has become so unhinged nowadays. I completely avoid all discussion about Mushoku Tensei because there’s a massive number of people online that never read or watch it but will spew utter brain rot about it. I have one good channel that I can talk about it. But I totally avoid twitter now talking about anime because people are so far gone. I had a guy send me 6 of the most bizarre messages because I said “they’re not real” on an anime post.

My question is, if nobody is buying their comics, why do they keep getting work? If comics are a business, and the goal is to make money, why hire people that don't sell comics? Surely then there must be some other reason all these people still get work.

Long before I became aware of the culture war I read and really enjoyed a number of comics featuring a hero called Livewire and when she eventually got her own book. I think I lasted 3 issues before dropping it, the quality was that bad. Years later i learned that the book was written by Ayala and it all made sense as to why there was such a precipitous drop in quality.

Most people don’t know what’s going on in the comic industry from terrible online behavior to scuffed storylines. If the normies start taking notice, that’s when you know there’s a problem.

This hits the nail on the head. I’m convinced that the culture war crowd doesn’t read the big 2. The books that people take issue with are 3rd string books no one reads.

I genuinely only care about reading the comics. Sadly the comics are mostly bad. Mango is 99% worthless filler. I'll just do something else entirely. The entire industry has lost my business.

Same here, I don’t take comic book KZfaqrs to heart, it’s my dollar. If I like something it’s because I formed my opinion about it, youtube has bred parrots that mimick the opinions of doom grifters. I’ll see other comments on others videos that sound awfully familiar to the comments of a KZfaqr that had said the same thing. The shite gets old after awhile Words like woke and sjw and all that gob shite have lost their power where something like those buzzwords were really a thing but in the past year there has been a pushback against pandering that those writers and books that were tanking and industry are pretty much disappearing. Also the whole DC and marvel will be gone in 5 years? I’ve been hearing that stupid shite since 2019 and it’s still being said, the apathy, condescension, and frankly bratty nature of certain comic book KZfaqrs of late really reminds me of the little rascals and their he man womans hating club. Just so childish and juvenile and all the flexing about how they fight with comic creators or get banned by comic book creators is just terribly silly. I doubt such people could do any better in the industry I doubt that they could keep the momentum of telling stories once or twice a month, dealing with mouthy fans (like them) a bunch of editors and keeping up with a schedule.
