What did NYC do differently to defeat MEP? Is this a strategy Ian at Essential Tennis can consider as they are playing soon- see Essential Tennis’ video for details on upcoming match: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asx2mJSG3d_Mo6s.html

A few things I noticed. 1) NYC was super fit and did not mind chasing balls in long rallies. 2) NYC had much better anticipation compared to other MEP opponents and was in great position to dictate play. 3) Most important - NYC's overheads were far superior to the other MEP opponents e.g. college student. He was consistently able to put away overheads not giving MEP a chance to gain the upper hand in the rallies. Overall I think NYC was one of the few players who was able to modify and mould his style of play to match and defeat MEP. This also means his Tennis IQ is pretty good compared to MEP's other opponents.

I think it's obvious why NYC won. He played slow, powerless balls while changing sides, rotation and length a lot. Even his serve was super soft most of the time not providing MEP under no circumstances the kinetic energy he needed for his game. MEP had to generate power himself, but he's lacking a classic Tennis education so he doesn't have the technique to generate the swing which would allow him to play powerful shots while still maintaining control and precision. Hence so many unforced errors by MEP. He's going to lose again and again against any solid, well educated (in terms of Tennis technique) opponent who's ready to grind against a player like MEP. MEP could improve his volley and smashing skills which would make it quite harder to defeat him. But as he doesn't have the right technique soon he'll run into a wall where his progress will become insignificant over time anyway. If MEP really wants to drastically improve his game, he'll have to re-learn Tennis the right way, as brutal as it sounds. But on the other hand, why should he do that? In his own right he's successful enough, defeating many players who play levels above him. And we enjoy watching these matches :-)

I feel like with all the drop shots/chips/slices that MEP uses, he's able to exploit the fact that most 4.5s don't have a very well developed net game. NYC has good groundies, was quick, and most importantly was comfortable moving to the net. Plus he put away almost every overhead, a huge difference from the other video matches. He didn't beat himself either. I think that and the combination of MEP having an off day. Fun to watch! 😊

NYC was patient and anticipated the drop shots well. He also anticipated the lobs well, staying near the service line, and didn't over hit his overheads. A lot of the times he was rallying from no man's land which worked well to quickly retrieve all the MEP droppers. NYC also employed way more slice than anyone else we've seen against MEP. I thought it worked well. MEP is a classic pusher style who loves pace and doesn't mind lateral movement at all. NYC crafted his game plan beautifully. That first set was very very close and could've gone either way.

@jp koell just to clarify, are you saying Essential Tennis is a overrated coach, player, or perhaps both? I don't think you can say he's an overrated player. He's a computer rated 4.5 and he doesn't claim to be anything more. I think he was one time a 5.0 but not anymore since he mostly just teaches. He puts out a ton of great, helpful content so I'm curious why you would say he's not a good coach/teacher.

NYC 4.5 played a great match here. He was amped up coming in and throughout the match, but didn't let that affect his composure. He was also amazingly consistent with his overheads. Although this match was in the middle of Atlanta summer, the conditions that day were more like NYC. I'm looking forward to seeing the rematch we had!

This was a great game. I believe in the early middle of the match you relied too much on lobs, and allowed him to get confidence as his early overheads were more tentative. The first time I see you make what I believe to be a tactical mistake. Good to see it happens to you too. Your change of tactics at the end was successful, but a bit late. Thanks for this, it teaches me a lot.

NYC's patience was key in my opinion. I hit with all the players MEP has played so far including NYC. In my opinion, the difference is NYC has more patience in this match, and rather than going for a winner on the first overhead, he placed it well and waited for a second or even third overhead that he can then hit for winner. Most players try to crush the first overhead.

As a player who just picked up a racquet for the first time since I was 8 and basically started from scratch this summer, I have never been so encouraged that I can easily be a 4.5 player within a few months. I’m currently about a 3.5 and made huge strides this summer. Blue shirts game is so aesthetically unappealing and will motivate me to be a 4.5 and beyond. I can’t believe my eyes as I watch this battle of unlikely athletes. I have never been so inspired to get better. Watching these 2 has given me so much hope to get better at age 30

Another great match. I really enjoy watching all these different players and their varied games. For this match, NYC did a nice job of being patient and waiting for opportunities to attack the net. He didn't get bothered with MEP's array of chips/slices/drop shots/loopy shots that have thrown other players off their game. NYC doesn't have a power game but does have solid consistent groundstrokes and a feel when to attack the net and pressure MEP to come up with a passing shot or lob. Which BTW is an excellent tactic against a player like MEP. He did look like he was getting a bit tired at the end, but thats a function of chasing down all of MEP's shots and executing his own game plan which he did well to win at the end.

I'm just going to say this: they are both great players in their own respective right and it was a great match to watch but NYC guy won because he was able to expose MEP's glaring flaws/weaknesses while pulling off some unreal shots himself. NYC guy was happy to grind which is essential against MEP and for once we saw someone use an occasional S&V and attack the net well for the most part. Some people are saying MEP needs to completely rehash his technique. I firmly disagree. Imho he needs to learn just 3 things: how to hit big topspin groundstroke lobs to help get him out of trouble on both sides and big topspin shots on both groundstrokes to put opponents under pressure and give them some different looks at times, how to put away overheads as that cost him at times and how to attack the net behind a good topspin groundstroke off the backhand wing when he gets a short ball on that side as the drop shots got a bit predictable. But MEP/Ben, don't try and change your core style as it works well just add a few things to take you to the next level. From one leftie to another, respect and good luck against Ian

great points. I agree - I feel he needs to build on what he has. What he does is excellent. Add some drive and a bigger serve (he is lefty also which helps) where he can win one or two free points and I think he can go to 5.0. My opinion.

Thanks for posting this. Super interesting to see someone solve the MEP puzzle without having overwhelming offense to hit him off the court. IMHO, MEP's main weapons are: 1) super consistent; 2) drop shot passing shot combo; 3) drop shot lob combo. As others have pointed out, NYC's above-average overhead took away #3. One comment I haven't seen is that NYC pretty consistently made deep approach shots on the drop shots, and that mostly neutralized #2. Many comments about patience being the neutralizer for #1, thereby eliminating the unforced errors seen with other opponents. But I think equally important is that NYC's patience conserved his energy -- pounding winner attempts at MEP that keep coming back is both physically tiring, and mentally disheartening. Since NYC didn't burn a ton of calories on his offense, he had a lot in the tank to keep running down all those drop shots. I'd really love to see a rematch to see what MEP would change now that he knows what NYC will try to do. Kudos to both players for a very interesting match.

Exactly about better approach shots. I just don’t hear many comments about approach shots against MEP. Short, or slow or middle of the court approach shots (basically weak ones) and you will lose every time. His accuracy and the ability to whatever he wants to a weak approach shot will kill you. NYC had strong, angled, deep and sometimes good paced approaches and MEP’s effectiveness and percentages of winners went way down. I’ve watched a lot of these matches and you don’t see very many short lobs from MEP. They’re usually wayyyy back making overheads hard or impossible. Ben couldn’t make thos lobs or passing shots nearly as often. Also, NYC kept his groundstrokes so much deeper than a lot of other players making it harder to put those drop shots in. He missed more than usual. Love Ben as he’s a fine player and great guy but I REALLY REALLY loved seeing him being the one running back and forth and being pushed around as he does to so many others. A little taste of his own medicine that he’s given to so many others.

Blue Shirt also controlled the tempo of the match. MEP is a strong 4.5 who would consistently win at 4.5 anywhere in the country, and we know that because he consistently wins in Atlanta. Your right tennis is only meant to be played one way. Because everyone who plays is going for high light worthy shots. Most points end in unforced errors, so of course it makes no sense for a defensive style to be developed into a term coined as “pusher”. Especially when competitive tennis players who only play to win are in the minority. Not to mention setting aside most peoples opinions to focus on doing the one thing you get a point for in tennis. Clearly that is not how you should play tennis 🙄

Unless Ian gets his fitness back, this is definitely NOT the strategy for him. NYC played a great, patient game and actually ended up MEP'ing MEP. On serve, he hit over his backhand more, but when returning he adopted a waiting game strategy with more slices and opted to rally and grind his points. His willingness to also force MEP into giving him easier overheads with deep volleys was another factor. People have been afraid to approach the net against him, but there are many openings he does give to safely approach. NYC recognized that, and wasn't discouraged after being burned a few times. He also was willing to commit to the net when drawn in by MEP and play a good directional shot and/or not being afraid to hit some topspin as opposed to just chipping it. If MEP had committed the net more and also got a little better direction on some of the shots he did play at the net, I think it would've been closer. This was a fun one to watch.

A great match to watch.NYC with better technique than MEP knew he could outlast MEP.He also knew that due to poor and limited technique MEP if given no pace could not hurt him at the back court and due to poor technique has no net game.Since NYC has no major baseline power he knew he had to come to the net to finish points of and patiently waited for his opportunities. These 2 players have higher tennis IQ than most players out there. They fully understand what tennis is about and play to win , within their limitations but will happily sit back and let opponents destroy themselves. There are many players out there who can hit better than these two but will lose in shock against them as they have not learnt how to play against counter punchers who provide no pace on the ball.People who say this is anti tennis need to go and learn the rules of the game and be humble and respectful of the players on show. Again a great tactical battle.

I thought blonde hair (green shirt at the beginning) is the MEP. Anyway NYC outsmarted MEP by playing soft baloony balls, changing length, sides and rotation, forcing MEP to run a lot and into actually generating power himself - at the cost of control and precision. While NYC remained patient and held on to his strategy, MEP at some point realized he's going to lose if he doesn't change something. In his despair, MEP decided to go to the net more often where he actually doesn't feel comfortable at all. This is a great lesson how to defeat an autodidact who compensates the lack of Tennis education with his strong will to never give up a single ball and to run as if there's no tomorrow just to hit that darn bowl back somehow. This was a highly interesting match to watch and kudos to both players.

I think MEP pretty much played his normal game. Perhaps a smidge off his best form, though, probably due to NYC playing a consistency game, also. I think the key to the match, to me, was that NYC had no mental issues playing the consistency game with MEP so he didn't get frustrated. That combined with being opportunistic with his offensive shots, moving MEP around and putting Overheads away when given the chance made a big difference in this match. NYC seemed to have a good game plan to beat MEP and stuck with it. NYC also changed things up from time to time with serve and volley, particularly in the second set and also had enough stamina to not get too tired. Once NYC got that first set, he loosened up a bit and was more aggressive overall and was successful with that style, as well. Honestly, initially I thought NYC would be in trouble because he didn't have any overpowering shots, but he proved to me that was not an issue if you could play the consistency game well enough.

Ian's life is tennis. He doesn't have a 'regular job' holding him back from being on the court. His full time job is essentially training to be better at tennis and then monetizing it on youtube (in addition to his academy work and of course all video editing work). He has more available hours to keep his skills sharp, which should result in less variance for best performance / worst performance days. 3.
