You’ve heard of Nero, of course. He’s a highlight of world history in high school - the crazy Roman emperor who supposedly fiddled with a tune while the city burned to the ground.
You’ve heard he was out of his mind, sure, but you have no idea exactly how nuts the last of the Julio-Claudian emperors was. Born into the twisted web of the Roman royal family, Nero was adopted by Emperor Claudius as heir to the Roman Empire. Nero distinguished himself as even crazier than any of his predecessors (which is saying something considering Caligula came before this guy).

Much like the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree is told to emphasize his honest and integrity, the story of Nero fiddling around while Rome burned probably is told to emphasize his casual cruelty and indifference to the people he was supposed to serve

one main reason for nero's later bad reputation is the takeover of rome and then much more of the world by christians. nero was a major enemy of christians, and is the biblical antichrist (there is a common misunderstanding that the antichrist is some unidentified big bad yet to come, but biblical mentions of the antichrist/the beast were referring to nero, they just followed a voldemort-like practice of not naming him).

Praetorian prefect (51-62) and, with Seneca, the chief adviser of the Roman emperor Nero (reigned 54-68). Burrus came from Gallia Narbonensis and held commissions in the Roman army and posts in the households of Livia (widow of the emperor Augustus) and the emperors Tiberius and Claudius. Made prefect of the Praetorian Guard in 51, he owed his promotion to Claudius' wife, Agrippina, who had become the dominant influence on her husband. Agrippina doubtless counted on Burrus' continuing support, but, after the accession of the 16-year-old Nero, Burrus, in concert with Seneca, managed to subvert her power. It is reasonable to suppose that until Burrus' death in 62, he and Seneca were responsible for imperial policy and administration. The ancient allegation that Nero Put Burrus to death SYPHILIS PLAGUE ,pryor to banishing him to land in pompeii this can neither proved nor refuted
