I’d give Hip-Hop the 00s from an overall consumption standpoint. Most of pop just takes elements from hip-hop whether it’s drum style, song structure, or melodies. The reason I’d say there’s really no standout doing super big numbers outside of Drake, Kendrick, and J. Cole is because everybody’s a rapper. The competition pool is so big that it takes away from the consumption of a single artist, every week they release so does 5-8 other rappers people wanna hear. If there were about only 20-25 legit rappers like pop musicians I think Kanye, Eminem, Drake, and Kendrick would probably go harder.

After seeing the actual numbers on Spotify, It looks like most of the albums till about 2005 are getting their streams off the strength of a single song. Take Queen’s “Night at the Opera” or The Animal’s self-titled album where Bohemian Rhapsody and House of the Rising Sun are doing 80-90 percent of the heavy lifting. It’d be interesting to see what would happen if Spotify also accounted for retention rate alongside just pure streams since it seems likely that most people are just tuning into the singles (probably from the popular category on the artists page) and then dipping; but still the entire album gets counted as being “listened to.”

It's fun to see how things evolved from Rock to Rap/Pop. It would be hilarious to see country music come back in like 5-6 years. Yeah I mostly listen to Rock but I have many other different genres in my playlist and yeah, I'm that type of person who'll say "it was better before" (around 2000-2005 was the best for me).
