In this video, I take a look at the CloudFree Smart Plug 2 that comes pre-flashed with Tasmota. I add it to Home Assistant using TasmoAdmin. I also briefly compare it with the Sonoff S31 plug.

Excellent and thorough video. I'm getting started with Proxmox and Home Assistant (again) and this really helps. I just got an S31 Lite and installed Ewelink on my phone and got a sick feeling in my stomach when I did. So, I'll be flashing Tasmota next. Showing the troubleshooting steps is a huge benefit for a HA/MQTT/Tasmota beginner like me. Also love the Graphana dashboard. Maybe in time...

Good find! Just FYI, u do not have to solder to get Tasmota on the S31. U can use "mini grabbers" with Dupont female/male connectors.

FYI. As of 09/17/22 the Sonoff S31 is selling on Amazon for $13.79 for a two pack. That's $7 each. Careful not too confuse with the S31-lite w/o energy monitoring. Also there is a new version Sonoff S40 that's even cheaper with energy monitoring. However it uses a different chipset and as of this posting I'm not aware of a way to flash it just yet. And like others said Don't Solder just use some simple Hook/Clamps and it's super simple to flash with Tasmota.

I bought two of these and they both died independently of each other within a year. I reached out to the CloudFree through their website and discord and they haven't responded after multiple times. Would highly recommend using an S31 and flashing yourself.

I am not a big fan of Tasmota Admin. Had it installed on my Raspberry Pi and the fan would cycle on and off constantly. Stopped Tasmota Admin and the fan stopped. It consumes a lot of processing power even when you are not using it. Used Grafana to check on temperature and CPU load and the differences between when Tasmota Admin was running and when it wasn’t was also dramatic. I gather it is also hard on your devices since I believe it is constant polling them through the web API.

Agree, Tasmo admin is terrible for a few reasons, including the app pinging the devices every 5 seconds. A lot of unnecessary traffic.

Interesting. I need to look into that. I haven't noticed any negative effects on my local network but it would be something to check more on.

Tasmota Admin runs great on a Windows Computer, but it's a very large program. The downloaded Zip file was some 500MB. That said it's a great utility program. But definitely requires to much processing power to run on a Raspberry Pi.

Chris how did you setup your Mqtt broker and Mqtt explorer? is your Mqtt broker in HA the Mosquitto broker?

I am using the MQTT add-on in Home Assistant. MQTT explorer is a standalone app on my Windows PC that connects to the broker.

Saved me from buying a Kill-a-watt. This has a long term useful purpose, but also will let me measure consumption. What kind of low end range and accuracy is there? I'm looking to measure LED assemblies that are down to a could watts.
@mostlychris
@mostlychris 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure how accurate they are at that low resolution. I never really measured that but would be curious what the results are if anyone else has determined it.

@@mostlychris I picked up two S31s. I haven't flashed them, but playing around with known wattages, they look plenty accurate for my needs, and I'm pleased with the resolution.

So we can buy these plugs pre-flashed? Then install Home Assist, add these, then download an add-on for the ability to use with multi-tiered time of date rates?

Why does everyone gripe about having too solder to flash the sonoff plugs? NO. YOU. DONT. Just buy some test hook clips with female jumpers to attach to the ft232 and then guess what? You dont ever have to solder anything you want to access via the usb adapter ever again. $10 or so and done.
@mostlychris
@mostlychris 3 жыл бұрын
Someone pointed that out and I bought some. I don't mind soldering but not everyone has access to do that. The jumpers are a nice option and I'll do that on my next plug.
@Musicman-50
@Musicman-50 2 жыл бұрын
Yep totally Agree it's a waste of time trying to solder 4 wires to the board. You'll never need to use the wires again. Just simply use 4 tiny breadboard wires with pins on them (male to Female). Simply stick them in the 4 holes and use a small Clothespin to hold them on. Heck I just held the sonoff board with one hand and with the other hand I plugged in the USB TTL interface and pressed the flash button. Bingo 30 seconds later your are good to go with Tasmota loaded up.
