PART 2 of the series- TasmoAdmin. Use the newly flashed S31 plug with Tasmota in Home Assistant. We go through the relevant settings to allow use of the plug as well as display of the power monitoring that comes along with the plug and firmware.
As I mentioned in Part 1 of the video, this isn't new to the Home Assistant or Home Automation world, but a refresh might be helpful to some, so I though I'd put this little series together. Enjoy!

@12:41 The "Protect from powering off" feature is actually very useful especially if you're using a plug solely for power monitoring. I accidentally switched off one of my desktops because I wasn't paying attention to which button I was clicking... Not that big of a deal since it probably needed to be rebooted anyway, but if a freezer was turned off and not noticed...
@mostlychris
@mostlychris 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I don't want to inadvertently turn it off since it is on the freezer. I have temp monitoring on the that freezer so I'd get an alert if that actually happened and the temp increased past the threshold.

I finally got around and followed your Tasmota guide and setup TasmoAdmin too. Unfortunately TasmotaAdmin caused my Sonoff S31 switches to continually crash. On Tasmota's Github discussions and Reddit, it seems TasmoAdmin is not recommended - it is known to cause issues with Tasmota devices and can cause lock ups and soft reboots...

Thanks for the feedback. I don't run it unless I actually need to do something. I've heard it is quite chatty.

Is there any way to sort columns? For example, to sort by name or by IP address.

From what I've read, ESPhome works with this plug also. Any advice on why to use one over the other? I have no experience with MQTT and am somewhat concerned to go down that road.

Personal preference. I started flashing Tasmota as a demo and then just did the rest the same. I use ESPHome for some things such as the ESP devices.

What is your opinion when naming best practices for devices/entities. should you include tasmota or esphome in the naming? would this help troubleshoot a device to know what integration you used?
@d_sellers1
@d_sellers1 3 жыл бұрын
I try to keep my entity names simple and kinda based on rooms. I have light.living_room_1 & .living_room_2. Same for the my bedroom. In the other bedroom, they're just called .desk, .dresser, and .nightstand. (Simple but memorable names will be useful when automating.) When I look at the entities, for example light.nightstand, I can see its Integration is Tuya. Now, with that said, I also have a spreadsheet where I keep track of all my devices on my network. I have the name, MAC address, IP address, if the IP is static, device type, and then vendor, make, serial numbers and other information. I have a separate sheet where I have the device_ieee for my zigbee devices. The spreadsheet would be my first stop for troubleshooting. I can filter the sheet to show me just smart bulbs, for example. Also, the bulbs themselves have a label with the MAC address for easy reference if needed.

Excellent way to track things. I use simple names as well, especially if I try to control them via a smart speaker. The fewer words I have to speak for interpretation, the better. Some of the stuff that I use for purely monitoring I might add the device type. Generally speaking, though, it's just simple names.

Would you happen to know the difference or when one would want to use the setoption19 1 and use the MQTT integration to find the plug, or leave setoption19 0 and let the tasmota integration find it? With all my others, I did the setoption19 1 and had MQTT see it under devices. But I forgot to do that with my S31 plug and it showed up under the tasmota integration.... thoughts ? I still configured the MQTT in the S31, so who knows?
@mostlychris
@mostlychris 2 жыл бұрын
Setoption 19 is used to make the device discoverable in HA. That also sets the topic in Setoption 59. If you switch it off, you'll have to reset the topic. However, it sounds like things are working for you regardless. If that is the case, then no need to change anything.

@mostlychris

Those are all good uses. I have an appliance switch on my washing machine. The display runs about 5 watts when it is on and it will stay on after a cycle if it is time to run a clean cycle. Because of that, I had to set the threshold of "> 5 watts for more than 5 minutes = running" and otherwise I consider it done with the wash.

I have S40 Type A plug and it is not supported by Tasmota. If I buy S31 version, can I remove the ground prong at the back? My outlet here is only 2 prong.
@mostlychris
@mostlychris Жыл бұрын
You can do whatever you would like, but removing the ground--and thus some protection--doesn't seem like a good idea. I would caution against modifying the plug in terms of its electrical characteristics. As always, consult with an electrician.

This saved me a lot of time setting up tasmoadmin. My Tasmota devices are showing up in the tasmoadmin web ui and can be controlled from there. Also the tasmota devices are showing up in the mqtt integration tool and can be controlled from there. Unfortunately they aren't showing up under the tasmota integration tool! Any ideas?

Hey Robert, can you remind me what the "tasmota integration tool" is.
@robertjones9189
@robertjones9189 2 жыл бұрын
@@mostlychris Hi Chris, when I said "tasmota integration tool" I meant the standard "tasmota tool" you can install on home assistant. It turns out that you can only set the system up to run either tasmota or mqtt. Home assistant uses the mqtt settings on the tasmota device - so you have to decide whether you want to use the mqtt or tasmota plugin to run the devices. You can't use both. Or at least I couldn't.

I have a Sonoff Basic R2. I got it to flash and all but when I went to add it to home assistant I was able to get TasmoAdmin on but I open the web UI and all I get is "Failed to open page" is that because I'm running my home assistant on a raspberry pi with a DNS server?
@mostlychris
@mostlychris 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe. It might not be able to resolve the domain name using mDNS. Try changing it to use the IP address of the device instead.

I had to disable SSL in the config for the add-on. There have been some SSL changed recently in HA that have complicated some of the add-ons that aren't updated. Unifi was a big one for me as well. If you use this without SSL enabled, make sure you are only connecting locally.

@mostlychris
@mostlychris 3 жыл бұрын
In TasmoAdmin under Devices, there is an "Update" option. This will allow you to update devices. You can either specify the firmware (download the files) or tell TasoAdmin to use the latest from the website.

Looking on Amazon, the S26 looks like UK and the S20 looks like EU. The S26 appears to be available in several different plug versions. sonoff.tech/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/%E4%BA%A7%E5%93%81%E5%8F%82%E6%95%B0%E8%A1%A8-S26-20210121.pdf There may be some other differences because I noticed the S26 does not have power monitoring; you might consider the Sonoff POWR2 or DUAL R2 if you're looking for power monitoring, as per a comment by Sonoff.
