By June of 1978, the once massively popular television star Bob Crane (of Hogan's Heroes fame) was relegated to doing dinner theater in Scottsdale, Arizona. In between shows, he and hanger-on John Carpenter spent much of their time trying to pick up women, and Bob would use the latest video technology to film his sexual exploits. When Bob was discovered bludgeoned to death in his apartment on the morning of June 29th, Carpenter almost immediately became the police's primary murder suspect.
My guest, John Hook, is an investigative reporter and award-winning Phoenix news anchor who in 2016 began a quest to have the cold case's remaining blood evidence tested for DNA. He writes about his investigation in his book "Who Killed Bob Crane? The Final Close-Up", and shares some of the details with me on this episode of Most Notorious.

From my understanding, He was going to go with Carpenter to the airport in the rental. Who knows if he got the rental car from the airport. @@marigold7250 Yup. And as the guy being interviewed mentioned multiple times: Crane was not one to "make waves". He wasn't the kind of person to just ghost friends, and disappear from their life completely without a word. He was trying to let Carpenter down gently about no longer needing him for his dalliances, but still allowed him to attend his Dinner Theatre show, traveled in the same car with Carpenter, and brought him along to go pick up some women after striking out with a different one. @cannibalisticrequiem Жыл бұрын
@@dreamingrightnow1174 It's debatable that it was _entirely_ "consensual", as Crane was still using the power of his stardom to convince women into those situations. He was definitely taking advantage of them wanting to spend time with an actor for his own personal pleasure while _they_ were probably hoping that it would lead to something more serious (a relationship and possibly marriage - maybe even starting a family). Plus since Crane would often pick up these women in bars or backstage and take them for drinks, it's not difficult to get someone to "consent" when they're under the influence of a mind-altering substance-- even if it is "just alcohol".

John Carpenter was the last person to see Crane alive. He came to ask Crane if he could stay at his apartment after both struck out with women, and then "left early" for his plane flight. Had it had been a second woman, Carpenter would have seen her, and it was never brought up.

I wondered that too. Jealous boyfriend. All the reasons this dude is giving for why it's Carpenter are pretty flimsy and the one thing that would have been convincing didn't pan out. Funny, he said even if the blood isn't Bob Cranes it doesn't matter that much, but they sure went to a lot of effort to test the blood. He's obviously trying to help the cops save face.
@cannibalisticrequiem
@cannibalisticrequiem Жыл бұрын
@@dreamingrightnow1174 They already dismissed why it couldn't have been a jealous boyfriend or husband. Crane was wearing boxers when he was killed in bed, and he only did that when someone else, like Carpenter, was in the same building as he slept in the nude otherwise. Plus there was no sign of forced entry, and the woman that Crane attempted to take back to his apartment was not interested, so she never went there. A second woman would have had to known where his apartment was to "lead their 'jealous' spouse there". AND Carpenter would not have bothered to ask Crane if he could stay there until Crane took him to the airport at 10 o'clock in the morning. Carpenter was the last person to see Crane alive because he was in the apartment with Crane, and would have seen Crane go to bed. Carpenter would have had to seen a woman and man come up to Crane's door and ask to be let in, and Carpenter said he was the only one with Crane in the apartment at that time, and I doubt he would've just let some random man and woman that he didn't know into Crane's apartment-- and the "jealous spouse" wouldn't have tried to kill Carpenter too to ensure no witnesses were left behind? That makes no sense. And again, there were no signs of forced entry through the front door, and camera equipment was blocking the only other way in. Had someone tried to break in through the back, they would've made noise tripping over camera equipment in the dark, and once again: Because Carpenter was there, even if he would have just let this mystery man kill Crane, you think the killer would be dumb enough to believe a plea of "I promise I won't squeal on you if you spare my life!"? No. Both men would have been killed, end of.

Except no, because the first time he phone the apartment, Crane's former Hogan's Heroes co-star answered the phone, and when the police took the phone from her and explained to Carpenter that "There was an investigation going on", Carpenter did not ask what was going on or what had happened, and hung up. It wasn't until later that Carpenter called back saying that he was "willing to co-operate with the police" and "would do whatever he could to help", possibly as a way to seem less suspicious to police and perhaps throw them off his scent. *If* he did it - allegedly, conspiracy, whatever.

Absolutely chilling to watch knowing Crane would be brutally beaten to death just ten days later in the bedroom just off camera to the right of the picture, and knowing that if the camera had been running that night it would have recorded his killer walking into frame and out the front door....

John Carpenter will have to be a master manipulator then because I find all of his story totally credible I mean Bob was known to run late all the time so he that when he didn't get there when he was supposed to be took a cab that's reasonable the only other thing is him calling Bob Crane Jr that's it and that could be explained by him figuring out since there was a detective there that some crime had happened so he calls his son to see if he needed anything in a way that's even reasonable

John alucard Carpenter told police he was willing to take a lie detector test but for some reason the police didn't give him one. He still murdered Crane imo.

What does it matter? Everyone knows by now that a polygraph test can be easily duped into giving incorrect results. Just how dumb are you to _still_ believe they are a credible source for convicting criminals? It's 2022. Not 1992.

To me this whole thing doesn't make sense why would he be in crane apartment after a heated conversation I heard they had a very civil conversation and we're slapping each other on the back and at the whole thing. The police were grasping at straws taking him to trial and the jury done the right thing they did not prove their case against him. They were looking for a conflict in any of the places they went to and they couldn't find a fight at any of them and crying might have been contemplating a change but he was quite happy having Carpenter around certainly so if crane would go to bed with Carpenter in the room

Idk. Cranes son did say that his dad was planning to cut him out and even 2 days before they were arguing at a restaurant and ppl kill in a rage rhe whole time. Even I'd it wasn't carpenter who could it have been? It had to be someone John knew cuz otherwise how else would the person have gotten in when John was a light sleeper plus he apparently also usually locked his doors so if it was a stranger he let in there would have been a struggle and why would he go to sleep with a stranger in his house and leave himself vulnerable? and i sometimes think it could be a woman who was in his vids but he also apparently let the women know before he recorded and the tripod was visible it isnt like now where u can easily hide a camera so im sure the women would have known plus idk if a woman could kill a man with 2 blows plus women usually use less bloody means to kill like a hitman, a gun, poisoning etc so it kinda just leaves carpenter. Maybe when carpenter came Crane told him he was turning a new leaf or they argued and crane went to bed, thinking nothing of the argument but Carpenter was angry and husband anger simmered till he killed Crane then dipped.

It's one thing to refer back to the book as you explain the murder, that's expected, but lol, this author determines to begin each utterance with, ( drum roll ) MY book then the title, etc. Little bit of egotism, lol.... probably a decent read if you can get by the authors ego.

I Don't trust this author. He's not a constructive thinker. He's not on the up and up. Too many faults in his interview. Glaring stuff like the boxer shorts means he didn't have a girl in bed with him. That's ridiculous any lawyer would eat that logic up...and forcing this narrative that's what pathological liars do. I also question him..😊phrasing he uses...the awkward laughs... he doesn't sound like a family man. I don't trust the author he did the biggest injustice by using up all the blood. I find that way too convenient . RULE #1number one ...Don't trust people that take and forever dispose of the main evidence. Shady author. That should be against the law. Dumb stuff like the tripod is missing.....what about the camera on the tripod? Was that missing? Ever hear of finger prints? That was around in the late 70's right. Based on nothing I think a girl did a video and regretted it either by crane showing it around or by word getting out he's showing it around. I'm assuming also the two wife's easily could have done this. Themselves or through hired friends or paid associates. Not for nothing the girl that found him would be my first big interrogation. She's absolutely stunning...her story makes zero sense. I don't trust her she's involved somehow...😮 you don't have that many lies and expect anyone to believe you. She thought crane was a woman, she by passed blood all over the walls and the very door knob she used to get in..... somehow without a key... liar that's all BS. She some part of something. A guy would have confronted crane (awake) unless the guy caught him with his wife. Key take sways How issues were not addressed. Why was the blood exhausted leaving no more to evaluate? That's bad detective work. It was obviously a woman Crane was sleeping with. Boxer on proves nothing. Silly to have that detail. or trying to sleep with. This notion of carpenter just going to hangout is non-sense. I don't believe the son either. Hundred of reason he wouldn't like the life his dad was leading he's my 2nd suspect. Anyone ever read "Death of a Salesman"??? I conclude the Scottsdale police absolutely know who did this. Author says "crane not one to ..." that's a complete lie. You can't predict other peoples reasoning it's silly to state that logic. Author is hiding something. Or MANY something's. Zero trust in this documentary it's too staged. Something is way off
