Thanks so much for this insight! After switching from Med/surg to ICU, I was wondering what it might be like being a mother/baby nurse in a relatively “happier” specialty. But whew, it sounds like it can be alot of exactly what I was trying to get away from with Med/surg (tons of patients + tons of tasks = little time with my patients)

The moms at my hospital require a lot. Blood pressure monitoring and meds, insulin & sugar checks, IV antibiotics, blood transfusions, hemorrhorages, vaccines, and we have a lot of C-sections, so that comes with a lot of nausea & nausea meds. We also take care of late preterm babies, babies on IV antibiotics, babies with jaundice on phototherapy, babies with minor heart defects requiring echocardiograms, and we frequently have 8 patients and have gone up to 10 before. Oh, and providing lactation assistance, oh my. It takes so much time.

I work on M/B as a tech and it's definitely a completely different world from my previous Peds Trauma unit. I also like the ability to plan out your shift but it can get really crazy with admissions, tasks, oh and the families 😅😂 It's interesting how each M/B unit is different too. The techs on my unit do all of the baby tasks (vitals, PKUs, CCHDs, baths, TCB,etc...) and d/c foleys and help walk the C/S patients.

Fellow mother/baby nurse here and I have to say that keeping up with feedings is the hardest part for me...especially when all moms are breastfeeding and need help! Can you make a video about how you organize your shift/cluster care 🙆🏼‍♀️
@alej79
@alej79 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! This video is so spot on. I previously also worked in the pediatric emergency room (which I loved) and am now in mother/baby. I'm not sure what I was expecting coming to mother/baby, but now that I've been here a few months, it's not what I was expecting lol a lot of ppl think it's "easy nursing", they call it boring and where nurses come to retire, but you def have to learn how to manage your time effectively because IT IS a very busy unit. Very much task oriented and fast paced. We may not be high acuity patients like ER or med/surg / tele, but some mom's have their issues that make your shift overwhelming. But I also miss the ER, the excitement of it and starting IV's and all the skill sets you get to practice on a regular basis. It's nice to know there's other nurses to feel how and what I feel ❤

Former mother-baby nurse here! Started there as a new grad and transferred to pediatric ICU. Kind of the opposite from you lol. Everything you said is spot on! Mother-baby is a great field but in my opinion if you are not intending to stay in OB then it’s not the best place to start just because of the skills that you’re missing out on. Transferring to PICU made me realize this big time. But it is a very rewarding job and can definitely be busy at times, just a different type of busy!

Hi! I have a few logistics questions.... What was the actual transition like from ER? Did you have to put in a 2 weeks notice in ER? When you were moving over to mother/baby, did you get a new offer letter and were you able to negotiate pay? Did you stay in the same hospital or move to a different one? Was the ER department pretty understanding that you wanted to change specialties?

@brittanymack802
@brittanymack802 3 жыл бұрын
@@Citygal01 My comment was about sharing knowledge when asked from my patients, because I can’t share now because I’m not done with school. I’m an extern on an l&d unit so I can’t use or share what I know because that’s the actual nurse’s jobs. So my excitement stems from my anticipation of graduating and finally being able to answer questions when asked , not because I just can’t wait to talk about myself. I’m just passionate about the subject. Hopefully that clarifies what I meant here.
