I started off on a medsurg/oncology/ hospice floor combined. Now I do rehab nursing and recently accepted a full time charge nurse management position where I'm no longer on the actual floor, more so working behind the scenes which I love. I also started off night shift and switched to days which I love. The thing about nursing is it's so broad and so many possibilities of change and finding what works for you. Before becoming a registered nurse I was a CNA in home healthcare and I plan to continue on with my education in the future. It's tough but it's an excellent career with lots of opportunities.

the one thing i've noticed as a pct for all the units at my hospital, in postpartum they stack the nurses with hella patients like 6-8 instead of your typical 4-6 max on other units. they think bc the patients aren't sick and it's a slower pace on postpartum that they can give the nurses more patients but nurses still have a lot to do. you've got mothers AND babies to care for as well as a lot of initial assessments and things to take care of like walking the c-section mothers after they give birth (to prevent blood clots), babies' first baths and carseat tests before they can go home. and since postpartum patients don't usually stay in the hospital more than a day after giving birth, you have multiple discharges each day which means lots of discharge paperwork to complete each shift in addition to all your regular charting

Welcome to postpartum and newborns!!! I am a high risk antepartum nurse but we are crossed trained in/and FREQUENTLY work with postpartum moms and newborns ( due to overflow of the postpartum unit OR for medical reasons that our floor deals with OR sometimes we float to the postpartum floor as well), gyne pts. (hysterectomies, vaginal biopsy etc) and unfortunately fetal/infant losses. I think that’s it.... Ohhh and in rare occasions I have heard from the seasoned nurses that pts have delivered on our floor. I love it because it gives me a little bit of everything as far as women’s health! Plus, I love being around the babies!

Take this for what it's worth, truly, if my sharing this does not help you at all, please disregard. When I had both of my sons, there were good and bad aspects. Two different hospitals, but all the bad occurred in the first child, all the good happened in the second at a different hospital where I ultimately ended up consulting with L&D over a 6-month period to improve the quality of care since they were getting back on their feet after a tiny small town hospital was bought-out by a large super hospital from the city. Good aspect #1: The nurses who were not overly pushy and were compassionate. #2: Listened to me and all my requests, did not "disregard" me as "just a dumb patient who doesn't actually know what's best for herself and her baby". #3: Left me alone as much as possible, did not come in constantly to check vitals, wellness checks etc. #4: Delayed first bath for 6 hours and allowed me to perform it rather than trying to take the baby away to do it away from me #5: Allowed as much skin to skin as possible, total of 12-hours constant s2s... even to the point of moving my room around so I could hold him that way and not flash the hallway, and putting a sign on the door to warn anyone entering that I was not decent and didn't plan to be. #6: Allowed as much cluster feeding as we wanted without making me feel like I was being a bad mother or not producing enough. He was a cluster feeder from the first minute he touched my chest and never stopped until he was 3-years old. He'd have continued past 3 but I made him wean when I had a hysterectomy. Bad aspect #1: The nurses who had been told not to feed my baby any formula & not to remove the baby from my room but they did it anyway and essentially kidnapped the child to put him in the nursery rather than leaving him with me in my room. #2: The "lactation consultants" who were nurses that went through the training but did not actually understand how to teach me to breastfeed, nor did they understand that it was not ME but the epidural that had changed how he was reacting post-birth... because they had never done it themselves as a mother and didn't realize how epidurals effect babies sometimes. They just had been trained in the class and epidurals weren't mentioned. #3: When I said something was wrong (he was tongue tied) but wouldn't believe me and ultimately made me feel stupid, They had me convinced something was wrong with ME when in fact it wasn't anyone's fault, it was just tongue tie combined with the epidural making him super groggy so he never learned to latch properly and ultimately lead to my quitting with EBF and went to EFF. So, my thoughts on you becoming trained in LC: Go for it! But please don't be offended if the moms don't "get it"... and please listen if they tell you something is wrong with the babies latch, even if they've never done this before... Also, as much as you can, please be as understanding and kind as possible... this isn't something that is easy to teach without having done it as a mother yourself and some of these moms are scared out of their minds... others, like myself, KNOW somehow that there is something wrong and if they had listened to me my first child's experiences would have gone so much differently...

I just start nursing school this week. It is very hard and I am learning 24/7! But I am so exited because I also want to be a postpartum nurse!

Omgeee! This is such exciting news. Totally fan girling over this right now lol. L&D/Postpartum are my dream specialties. I've been watching your videos since you were in nursing school. I can't wait to hear about your new journey! How long will your actual orientation on the unit be?

Don’t worry I’m a postpartum nurse and I have no children but you will learn so much and you’ll walk in confident ready to teach your pts all about their care and baby! I believe it’s the best specialty so much fun!
