Motherboards come in different sizes, but which size is the best fit for you?
There are ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ITX, just to name a few, but which one of these should you pick?
This is exactly what we'll be discussing in this video!
Keep watching.
Note that we in the video incorrectly say mini ATX instead of mini ITX. We obviously meant mini ITX.

ridiculous how micro is larger than a mini, I thought smart people were developing this stuff?
@SoundShunter72
@SoundShunter72 5 жыл бұрын
It probably has to do with the fact that ATX and Micro ATX are based of the ATX configuration and the Mini ITX is based on the ITX configuration. ITX actually has other sizes like Nano, Pico and Mobile, which are smaller than Mini. ATX also has other options, including Mini, which is longer but narrower than Micro, so eh, still not entirely logical.

for anyone actually thinking about buying a sff case, don't worry about the pci-e slot, like the kolink rocket, most shoebox sized cases don't actually mount the gpu in that spot, but have a riser cable which leads to a different spot for the card to mount. this way, you can get cards that take up two slots and are up to 310 mm long into a 9l case.

Micro ATX cases are a very good fit for many office environments. Naturally, only m-atx mb's fit in them. Full size ATX mb's need mid or full size towers (7 expansion slots, though most motherboards don't populate more than 5 or 6 slots, the extra slots are covered by dual slot GPU cards, or can be used for extra USB or Serial ports via motherboard expansion plugs). Full size ATX boards usually have larger heat sinks for VR's, and can therefore handle overclocking. m-ATX mb's don't usually handle overclocking as well, and m-itx boards usually can't even handle CPU TDP's over 95 Watts. Not all micro-atx boards have 4 dimm sockets. About half are only 2. Micro-ITX boards are the most expensive because they usually require more layers to get all the traces in. Micro-ATX boards are large enough that they don't require this, and because they use less copper than full size boards, they are cheaper to make. Micro-ATX boards can end up using as much copper as Full size ATX because of the added layers, and the extra layers require added manufacturing steps, and have less yield in production (more defective boards). Full size ATX boards are more likely to have two or even three M.2 SSD slots, Micro ATX boards will usually have only one or maybe two. Look for a board with at least one x4 pcie slot if you want to add more m.2 storage via an expansion slot, but few micro ATX boards will have more than one large pcie slot. There ARE 32gb ddr4 dimms, so in theory you can get 64gb of memory even on a mini-itx. However, these dimms are still expensive, and not all motherboards are wired to accept them, even though the latest processors will handle up to 128gb of ram (and CPU's with 4 ram channels will handle up to 256gb).

ATX is kind of dead now that SLI is dead, since its all single GPU nowadays, mini ITX makes the most sense. Mini ITX are much more satisfying to build, its like you are building yourself a little console, rather than a big clunky box.

Before having the build that I have now, I just had an SLI, and it is not worth the price, nor the performance, nor the problems that it involve (most of the games come out without supporting SLI or poorly optimized for SLI). And even if you do not "move" your PC even to clean it, maintenance is more convenient a mini-ITX, and is not cheaper, you can find cases at the same price.

This stuff always always depends on what the user needs the computer to do, that's why one size doesn't fit all, you would have to ask questions like, where do you intend to put the computer, what size case are you using, do you need more features like overclocking, all sorts of things need to be taken into account.

Small correction for the last part. For Surfing/Office/Multimedia-PCs it's advice move of those formtactors. If you know you won't upgrade in the future with a graphics card or similar just get a small formtactor barebone PC or even the AsRock DeskMini in different versions. Around 150 $ for case, board and PSU is a great deal and you'll even be capable to select the CPU and RAM yourself.

I landed here because I wanted to purchase a " RAIDMAX MONSTER II ATX" Case but my motherboard is from a "Dell Optilex 7010 Micro-ATX" (a.k.a.... SFF (Small Form Factor) machine. I'm planning of upgrading it to Core i7 with LGA 1155 slot since the manual said the motherboard supports it, but I want it to be water-cooled, and as far as I have researched all Micro-ATX cases are too small for water-cooled system so I have to go with the Full-ATX case. I thought it wasn't possible lol.

i've settled on mATX since 2008 and never changed haha Small enuff for lower volume cases (with excellent cooling) yet unlike MITX slots other than for GPU for expansion cards (PCI-e/PCI) and 4 DIMMS, etc! By the time you have MITX only casings that needs advanced/bigger cooling for high end hardware it ends up almost as big as MATX casings anyway and lose expansions slots, etc :(

Usually you just use a riser card/cable for mini itx builds inside of small cases, it usually solves the spatial issues. Also mini ITX is viable for people who like small form factor builds and you only need one gpu so the PCIe argument isn't very viable when it comes to gaming(unless you need to game at 8k 60fps); and there are multiple mini ITX mobos that support 64gb of ram but those are usually more expensive obviously. Other than that this is a good video

No game in this planet needs more than 16gb of Ram.

@@GassyBastard In the vid she says that itx motherboards have a 32gb cap, even though there are multiple motherboards that support 64gb of ram, hell I actually found one that supports 128gb of ram. That's why I commented on supported ram amounts. I agree that many games don't even need 16gb of ram to run well. Most other things said in the video, were correct, but she was wrong about a few things.

If I have a 256Gb NVme drive(E.g ADTAT SX8200 PCle Gen3 x4) and plan to buy one more in the future. Which motherboard should I choose for the AMD Ryzen platform. I am not quite sure both X470 or B350 board would support 2 NVme drives...

I would recommend ATX. But for motherboard I recommend the asrock fatality for x470. In my opinion asrock has kicked ass in the new ryzen and Intel coffealke CPUs. Just make sure there is 2 m.2 slot on the motherboard you buy and that they both can run at x4 speed. Asus is also great, but I have not been amazed by the new gigabyte motherboards. For example I have a z370-e Asus motherboard it has 2 m.2 slot that can run at x4 speed so I am can 2 nvme m.2 ssds

Hoped it helped. But based on my understanding and ryzen series for x470 and x370 have less PCIe lanes then Intel z370 motherboard. So just make that they both m.2 slots run at x4.

I have not seen any micro or mini ATX motherboards that have m.2 slots so you will need ATX.

I find really annoying how most microATX cases leave so much empty space inside. It's hard to find one to build a simple small PC for work.
