This is so heartbreaking to watch. Being nearly 8 months pregnant, I couldn't imagine having to give my baby up right after she's born. Hopefully these moms rehabilitate themselves and learn to grow and change for their babies. This program is really neat.

I see a lot of comments talking about mothers but let's not miss the point here: when the mothers are rejected for the nursery its the baby who looses. The first years of the babies are key for their adult mental health and THEY deserve and need to stablish a safe attachment with them, no matter what record their mothers have as long as they are psychologically able to meet their needs.

I hope the woman with 8 kids stops having children. That said, I think this programme is excellent and making the best of the situation. The child is the most important person and it is a critical and primitive need to have that physical and emotional bond with your biological mother. Granted they are not a threat to the child, the mother should have that access. It also creates a tangible incentive to inspire these woman to not re offend and create a better life, when they finish their sentence.

the fact that they have to give up the babies 24 hours after they are born is just disgusting. there should be a program where relatives keep them for those that have them and they must bring them every day to be breastfed and held by the mother or, if someone doesn't have close family avaiable, there should be caregivers for that. if we're talking about short sentences, you're supposed to do everything you can to give these babies everything possible to live normal lives. 24 hours is ridiculous.

We can't really ignore the fact that some women are in prison for child abuse, neglect, or murdering their children. If someone didn't do that, then yes their baby deserves to live as normal of a life as it is provided. Current violent criminals of parents don't deserve babies, that just ruins the childrens lives.

lots of the people in prison have been traumatizingly damaged by their families to the point they ended up in prison, especially the young ones. When I was younger and worked as a journalist, we had a special article about mothers in prison. My country allows it, but the mothers have to go through vigorous psychological testing. A lot of the interviewed mothers were very sweet. We have programs to train prisoners for work once they leave prison, mothers would delegate their times between classes and caring for their children. The children had playground and daycare and honestly, if not for the bars on the cell doors, it didn't feel like a prison. When the child turns a certain age (6, I think, this was over 10 years ago, I could be wrong), the child has to leave the prison and go to either family members of foster care. The child will then get visitation with the mother until the mother is released (not sure if this was compulsory but all moms say it's usually followed unless someone is sick). I honestly think it was a great program for those mothers. It gives the mothers something to strive for, it gives the children a chance to know the mothers and for everyone else, it gives them a sense of community cuz what better way to bring women together than to care for a child?

@@Mammaj1963 It's not that simple. Mental health, upbringing, other traumatic things that happened in their lives that they have no control over can also greatly affect them as adults and when some of these adults are in such a mental state, they turn to drugs/crime to feel better and as an result develop mental diseases if they don't have any already. False imprisonment is also an issue. As Donna said, she was raped at 14 and then she just didn't care about herself anymore, taking drugs to feel better and those drugs lead to crime. It's not her fault she was raped. It was something out of her control, and she suffered very poor mental health because of that, leading to crime. It's never as simple as "just do the right thing". There are a lot of factors to consider too that were out of the criminal's control that lead them to crime, a lot of the times it's poor mental health.

Of course, if someone has committed a crime that threaten's the babies' life, then I don't believe they should be able to keep their child. We allow this in Canada, women federal prison is like camp cheesecake. They have houses (in some) some are designated for moms and babies, with fenced yard and swings etc. They can keep them until age 4. Most choose not to and are usually given to relatives to take care of (worked at a camp cheesecake). They prefer conjul visits with their children (weekend in a separate house with family member), approved but only a few a year and they must pay for all the food required. We believe in rehabilitation, not just incarceration as a punishment. Many are moms and do grieve not being with their children. A woman does more time for the same crime than a man, but they have it much easier (system discriminates).

Father's have to, no one cares about them it seems. A father went to jail and apparently when the mother wanted to give up custody the father automatically got his removed so the girl was fostered by a family ready to adopt and the dad got released and had to fight in court to get his daughter back and everyone was on the side of the adoptive family and the court ruled in the adoptive family's favor... The father was in jail for drug charges so nothing too serious... Everyone was against the father it seemed.

This might be the push that helps the mothers turn their lives around. People forget too, that mom is the only thing these babies know. Babies who are separated from their mothers still struggle with it. Even if they've been placed with a loving, wonderful family. Its a difficult adjustment for the baby. And, as a mother myself, I know that being separated from my newborn would have sent me into a spiral that I don't know if I would have been able to rise out of. I'm so thankful that I've never been in this situation.

I honestly think that it's degrading a woman if she gives birth and is in shackles. Yes they're in prison for a crime they committed. But please let these women give birth unshackled. Where is she gonna run to anyway? She's in labor. She won't try to run away. Let the female officer stay in the room with the mother. I've known officers that have witnessed a birth and afterwards they've gone through a change. It changes things. So please, let these women labor without shackles!

I think it's a horrible idea. Not only do the mothers not deserve to have them (they are in jail for a reason) but it's unfair to the baby and could most certainly cause affects later in life. Also fathers don't get to keep their babies when they go to jail, why should mothers. It's a bad environment for the baby and the baby is better off going to a relative or something.
