Thanks Travis. Good insights as always. I have started using more zigbee sensors in HA. I do like using the Shelley motion sensors in my garage, they’re big big, but they last months.

Thank you so much for testing indoor vs outdoor hue sensors. When you made the first video I requested it and at the time I only had 1 outdoor sensor I used inside. Now I have 2 and the new indoor sensor. I just got them so can't speak to compare them much. The range and view on the outdoor is as you say, insane!

Oh btw with the outdoor mount, I put a Velcro strap through it to make up for the lack of magnet.

I can say however that they replaced two of my old zwave hsm200 which I loved the led and form factor but hated the high pitch noise they made. I couldn't put them in the same place obviously but didn't matter and it was a seamless replacement in terms of reacting. Actually better but I admit may be due to better placement.

Great breakdown of the motion sensors. Anyone have any experience with the newer Lutron motion and occupancy sensors that are stand alone battery operated? I have not found any videos on them as of yet. They are not cheap, but are suppose to integrate to HA through the Lutron hub.

I would chime in that Linkind are great...at first. One year in, many are becoming problematic. I had/have 8 around my home in addition to numerous others in home assistant. They were rock solid for about a year with almost instant detection and flawless integration with z2m. Now that most are past a year old they aren't nearly as responsive (changed batteries in all of them and nothing changed), fall off the mesh all the time and have to be woken up manually, and 2 have to constantly be re-paired. Of the original 8, I only have 3 still functioning as intended and in place. 2 are "ok" in that they take longer to recognize motion than they used to, but function as secondary triggers in a group with other sensors in a room so not a big deal. The other 3 I have given up on and just in my junk box in my network room.

Very true! I have done this with some clocks that were battery only and next to a plug. But if you have mains power I wound opt for an ESP based solution.

I'd be intersted whether the Aqara P1 motion sensor is still as bad with the Aqara hub or whether this is something in the zigbee2mqtt device profile that is off. It behaves like the motion sensitivity is adjusted to low. It's certainly not reacting to the advertised 7m distance for high.
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 2 жыл бұрын
That was my only thinking as well, it seems pretty bad for what it is. It did better than the Shelly though! HA! I don't have their hub to test it though. Messed with one before but putting Zigbee in the cloud was a pass for me.

@digiblurDIY

Yeah as it is the only one that is outdoor rated that I tested. Others would require the user to seal them in something and still be able to see out.

Do you have any powered motion sensors to include in tests like this? Battery powered ones are obviously a lot more convenient but a big advantage of the powered ones is the lower timeout until they leave detected status. On that topic, I see you can modify the aqara sensors to lower this timeout. You have to open it up and do some soldering but I figure if anyone has tried this, it would be you! I'm curious on how easy to process is and how much it affects battery life.
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Some stated the battery wasn't impacted, given the issue with their protocol on the older line and such I didn't see it worth it. Glad to see they fixed those two issues on the newer one. And yes, I have some mains powered ones off of ESP chips using the AM312. Love those little sensors and easy to mount in things. I've done some older multisensor videos and such on them.

@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 2 жыл бұрын
The reliability and ease of use with BLE just isn't there yet compared to a mesh protocol like Zigbee or Zwave. BLE is great for temperature and stuff that isn't time sensitive like motion.

I really like the Ikea sensor.. I think you just did not configure the occupancy timeout in the settings, did you? The default is 90 seconds, which is actually good for battery saving and a lot of applications anyways, but if you want to test the sensitivity it would make sense to set the time out to 0-3 seconds.
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 5 ай бұрын
Mine didn't have any exposed settings on the timeout. I found others complaining about it as well on various threads.
@peterpalupski
@peterpalupski 5 ай бұрын
I think it depends on how you integrate this sensor. If you use the Ikea Hub or Z2M the settings should be exposed. ZHA and other platforms might not be supported. I have 2 of these Tradfri sensors and am pretty happy with them. The only annoyance is that it is pretty hard to make OTA updates work using Z2M. It probably is easier using the Ikea app, but I am not going to connect any Zigbee device to a cloud.... Nvmd I ordered one of these new Aqara sensors as well. They are three times as expensive, but I like the configuration options they come with :).
