TPMS, or Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, have been mandatory equipment on cars and light trucks for the last decade. Even so, how many times have you had a customer return after a routine service or repair that required tire/wheel removal with a now illuminated TPMS warning light?
Recently, I had a similar situation hit home. My wife’s 2014 Scion Tc suddenly turned on the warning indicator. And it wasn’t the first time this has happened. In every other instance, a quick check revealed a punctured tire. Not this time. A check of the tire pressures found them all in specification! A check of the sensors themselves revealed no faulty components and no trouble codes related to the system were stored in the controlling module. So why was the light on?
Both scenarios require the servicing technician to have a foundational knowledge of how TPMS works to resolve. In this edition of “The Trainer”, I’ll go over the fundamentals of the indirect and direct TPMS system functions and talk a bit about how to test both. More importantly, I’ll share tips on what to do before and after any service that could impact the TPMS system operation in order to avoid unnecessary comebacks. Last but not least, I’ll share the story of the Scion and what the final fix turned out to be!

I'm a Chrysler dealer tech, and i have been dealing with these systems for years now. One thing that i've learned with these systems is that the tire pressure spec on the placard is often just above the low pressure threshold. I remember Chrysler issued a tsb in early 2007 saying to inflate the tires about 3 psi above the placard spec. Chrysler started using tpms systems in 2006, and found out after the winter of 06 that when the temps drop, so do the pressures. That is why they advised adding the additional 3 psi above the placard spec. Chrysler had various versions of the tpms systems, there were two levels, a base, and a premium. The base is just the light on the dash, the premium will actually show the pressures of each tire on the dash in addition to the light. The system used by Jeep will update when the key is turned on, all other systems, the vehicle has to be driven at least more than 15 mph, for a short period of time. sometimes, they'll update as soon as the vehicle leaves the driveway, sometimes, the vehicle has to be driven a mile or more for the sensors to update the module. I'm a used car tech, so i've seen the various ways that different makes relearn the sensors. Some systems you have to lower and raise the pressures, some you have to use a tpms tool to get the sensors to wake up and update. The first thing i do when i suspect a faulty sensor is to use the tpms tool to check at each wheel whether there is a sensor there and working or not. I've found bad/missing sensors that way. I've also found that things with foil on them, like a greeting card, can cause reception problems. All the automakers are moving away from the aluminum valve stem due to corrosion issues. The rubber ones are cheaper and easier to change. Also, with the rubber ones, the sensor is attached to the stems with a screw. Apparently, the auto companies are learning, and have actually made it easier to diagnose and fix problems with the systems now.
