I always thought, from watching other vids, engine braking was pulling in the clutch to slow down & coast. Guess I was wrong. This makes a lot more sense & I see how other riders can take off so fast when they don't have to come to a complete stop. I've been doing it all wrong, pulling in the clutch. Thanks as always for your wisdom!

so in plain terms - engine breaking is basically leaving the throttle at it's start position (i.e. not giving it any gas)?

and it also saves you fuel . because in the moment where you are in gear and give no throttle it useses zero fuel . when you clutch in it uses a bit fuel to keep the engine running . when you are engine breaking the engine is turned by the wheel . so you not only have less break wear , you also have better fuel milage . And it do not work only on a motorcycle , it works on any vehicle with a manual gearbox .

@Daakuryu
@Daakuryu 3 жыл бұрын
Why are you releasing both the clutch and the throttle at the same time? Clutch should already be completely out because you are driving, when you want to slow down you let go of throttle and the engine brakes and slows you down

Is it engine braking or friction between road and tyre? Letting off the throttle is abstaining power. So no external force to drive forward. Then friction will obviously slow it down

I never blip the throttle when engine braking - just release the clutch a little slower - an almost idling motor increases the engine braking as the clutch is released (at least on my V4 1100). Even coming to a stop at the lights where you're down changing just release the clutch a little as you do so.Braking with the engine is mainly for slowing down stuff - e.g. approaching a lower speed zone or going down a hill; not quick stopping. Most of the time I just roll off the throttle unless I have the trailer on tow then it's down a gear.Most modern if not all bike gearboxes are constant mesh so when you release the clutch and change gear you're in the next gear before you blip the throttle. Blipping the throttle to down change for quicker acceleration is the only time I do that as I don't want to loose engine revs.

Great Vid. I guess I was somewhat confused on engine breaking. I'm a new rider and I thought that engine breaking is when you have to downshift to make bike slowdown. So lets jus say I am going like 40 mph. in 4th gear. I have a ninja 300 by the way. When I want to slow down to make a turn do I. Jus roll of throttle while staying in 4th so that I can make the turn or. Downshift and rev match to like 2nd to make turn or just break..Which is more effective.
@nightrider3067
@nightrider3067 8 жыл бұрын
+Mpeeze318 Downshift and rev match to second gear and maybe brake as well.It depends on how strong your bike engine brakes!Some bikes will slow down quicker than others!

amaan shah honestly engine breaking in 5th gear is as good as going on that speed itself . You'll have to gear down constantly (not so that your engine revs beyond redline) and then come to first brake and halt . Honestly takes a lot of distance and thinking so better to leave it for the city commute . Best used on hills to prevent brakes from over heating

What if I’m in 5th gear, start engine breaking and my bike slows down of course, but now I need to accelerate again after it’s slowed and I’m still in 5th. Is it a problem now that I’m in 5th gear, but RPM no longer match my speed. What’s gonna happen when a person hits the throttle?

This barely scratches the surface of a basic riding skill. Engine braking is about using the engine to control your speed without using the brakes. It is not about stopping, or hard deceleration, using the engine. If you use the front brake, there is a big shift forward of weight and the forks dive. If you use the back brake, there is less weight on the back wheel and there is a risk of a rear wheel skid (although most modern bikes have ABS, which reduces that risk). However, if you are riding in an appropriate gear, then rolling off the throttle will allow the bike to slow down against the resistance of the engine. It is not an "on/off" thing. Done properly, you have excellent control of the bike with very little fork dive, so the handling remains balanced. On my local lanes, when I am just in commuting mode, I might amble along in 6th gear and feather the front brake a bit when needed. When I am riding for fun, I'll drop down to 5th or even 4th gear but ride at the same speed, rolling on and off the throttle smoothly to adjust the speed of the bike without having to brake. However, on a public road, where there may be vehicles following, it is wise to cover the brake lever enough to activate the brake light as a warning. Cars have engine braking, but much less so than bikes, so it is wise to warn them! And no, it doesn't hurt the engine. (Exception: prolonged engine braking on a long descent on a 2 stroke.)

+Night Rider teaser indicates that you're going to make an in length video about the bike. I didn't expect you to have a video on the bike without an in length video. (I don't know if I explained it right)

As far as I know of they are all wet clutches. The way a clutch on a motorcycle vs car needs to work bikes should have wet clutches.

Why are people allowed to ride on public roads without knowing basic shit like this? Driving license requirements in the USA are ridiculous. No wonder there are so many "bad driving" videos. You guys don't teach people how to drive before you let them!

Car's too. We have drivers here tap the brake on the downhill, eventually when they really need them it won't work anymore.

I agree... IMO, to be granted a driver's license, car/motorcycle, the testing process should be much more detailed and include highway driving. Basic stuff like how to 'properly' accelerate on the on-ramp. Or.... make safety courses Mandatory prior to being granted a driver's license... Also, IMO, anyone wanting a motorcycle license should have to have at least 3 years experience driving a car. Learning how to ride a motorcycle can be very daunting to some peeps. That, combined with learning how to 'drive' (road rules/signage/other peeps behaviours while driving) could lead to disaster. Learn how to 'Drive' in a 'Cage' first... then tackle a motorcycle... ✔
