In this video I show how to adjust the valves on a 1985 Honda XR600. Each valve and rocker arm is covered by a screw on cap called a valve adjustment cap. The caps should be removed to adjust the valves. The valves should be adjusted with the bike cold and the piston at TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke. There are two small threaded covers on the left side of the crankcase. Behind the larger cover is a bolt attached to the crankshaft that can be used to rotate the crankshaft using a ratchet and socket. Behind the smaller cover you can see the outer edge of the rotor/flywheel. On the outer edge of the rotor is etched a line next to the letter 'T'. When the line is exactly in the center of the smaller cover hole, the piston is at top dead center. Use a ratchet and socket to rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise until the line next to the letter T is centered in the smaller cover hole. If the piston is at TDC, the rocker arms should be loose and you should be able to wiggle the rocker arms with your fingers. If you can't, than the piston is not at TDC on the compression stroke and the crankshaft should be rotated another 360 degrees counter clockwise. Once the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke the valves can be adjusted. On each rocker arm is a adjustment screw and a lock nut. After the lock nut is loosened, the adjustment screw can be turned to change the distance between the adjustment screw and the valve stem. The distance for the intake valves should be .004 inch and the exhaust valve should be .005 inch. After the adjustment screws are set to the correct setting, the lock nut should be tightened to 17-19 ft. lbs.
Tools Used:
- .004" and .005" feeler gauge
- 24mm socket for valve adjustment caps
- 12mm closed end wrench and 12mm socket
- Straight Screw Driver
- Torque Wrench
Specifications:
- Valve Adjusting screw lock nut should be tightened to 17-19 ft. lbs
- Valves should be adjusted cold with the piston at top dead center on the compression stroke.

Good vid , i have a 125 and i done my valves completly wrong i done the inlet tappet on the compresion stroke and the outlet on the exhaust stroke (seemed logical at the time) but this just cleared it up for me why my bike isnt running properly

The oil can't get into the cylinders unless the valves are worn, so there's no way to stop smoke from adjusting the valves. That's probably from oil seeping past the valve seals which seal the stem part, or seeping past bad piston rings.

thankyou for the video but couldn you use a closed end wrench on tightening the nut adjustment and holding the flat head screw adjustment with a flat head.then check the nut with a torque wrench.this would keep the valve screw fromm moving.cause really anybody whose done any wrenching knows whats 25lbs feels like so 17lbs is pretty close to that.

Hey mate, i have checked all my valve clearances for my 84 xr500 and they are correct, but my bike still has very low compression. Do you have any ideas on what it could be?

I'm pretty sure that means the piston ring is worn. Did you ever figure out what was causing it? Your comment is four years old, but I'd like to know the cause, in case I end up in the same situation.

yeah the compression is correct and what makes me think its the carb is because i can start it like 5 times and it dont wanna go and fuel comes out of the exhaust but somtimes i get lucky and start it up and it runs great until i shut it off for a few hours then it runs like crap again

@Stan Ziobro, Some comments don't have a reply link, so I can reply to your comment. Yes, removing the spark plug makes is easier to position the piston at TDC.

So I'm doing the valves on my xr350, and everything is exactly the same. I've actually done the whole process twice and both times when I restart the bike I get bad valve noise. I let the bike cool and check again and they're within spec. Any ideas?

I have a 1986 Yamaha SRX600 and I was wondering - Do you have to take the spark plug out to adjust the valves? I figure the piston should be a TDC when I push the kick start down and get the hard resistance. If I push slowly it clicks just past TDC and that's where I kick start the bike from. Of course I check the marking on the crank to see I am at TDC, but it doesn't stay where the mark is. It seems to either fall short or spring past the TDC mark when I try to center it. But that's why my initial question about having to remove the plug first. Is that what's causing it not to hold the TDC alignment? I don't seem to feel any looseness like you talk about in the rockers and it makes me wonder if I had TDC on compression. Right now it clanks a lot and I know I did not do it right because it didn't before.
