Staff at Barnsley A&E work busy shifts, dealing with all sorts of critical patients. Doctors see to a man involved in a motorbike accident and a drunken fight. The patient's injuries incurred from the fight cause more immediate concern for the staff and seek to deal with it quickly. Meanwhile, another patient is suffering from vertigo which could be a symptom of a stroke. Doctors and nurses weigh up their options on how to proceed.
The doors of the Barnsley A&E department are open every hour of the day. The reality series allows for a peek inside the hearts and minds of the medical emergency teams, and how they deal with critical situations revolving around people's lives and illnesses. The close-knit team exchanges typical Yorkshire banter and humor to aid them with getting through their often long and tough days.

I am a nurse in the US, I love the calmness and the time the clinicians take wiith their patients. The US has gotten away from this empathy, for speed as determined by management & insurance companies. It makes me think about moving there.

Most people don't have dental insurance especially those on government assistance so they go to the ED where they get some pain relief/antibiotics and advised to see a dentist...some never do and return multiple times for pain meds.

What the hell is critical pain? Do they mean critical condition?
@d.rim.4275

It's a diagnostic tool. (Critical care pain assessment tool). At a certain pain level the nervous system can get overwhelmed and cause problems such as vomiting or even going into shock.

15 mins to be seen and 4 hours to be diagnosed. Unheard of in Canada. You are lucky if you can be discharged (not kept overnight or sent to surgery, ICU, etc.) within double that time. 🇨🇦

I gashed the back of my hand open while washing dishes, waited 8 hrs at the closest hospital until a car crash arrived, gave up, drove 20 miles to a town the next county over after a nurse at my gp's office said to try the er I'd just left which now had a 12hr wait time... I wait at the other hospital 5hrs to have a nurse tell me id waited too long. I told her id wait to see an actual dr & sat 4 more hours before a dr looked at it. I left 3 hrs later w/ 11 stitches, got billed $900 by 1st hosp, $2300 by 2nd hosp, & $275 by gp office for referring me to the er. That was in 1998. Nothing is better- not costs, not wait times, not overbilling. But ive gotten pretty good with super-glue after dealing w/ a few broken windows. 🍀🙏😅

I have a question, I was watching an older video an older woman fell…the paramedics gave her Morphine then a few minutes later she got sick. SO MANY people are allergic to this drug, has even killed people because it was unknown or the drs or paramedics didn’t look into their records. Shouldn’t they ask the patient or find out before giving morphine?
@d.rim.4275
@d.rim.4275 Ай бұрын
Very often it's not an allergy, just the vomiting centre in the brain that gets activated. An antiemetic can be given to help with that. A real morphine allergy with rashes, swellings and cardiovascular problems is rather rare. But in general - if the patient is awake it should be asked if they've ever been given morphine before and if they take certain medication.
