A World Sportscar Champion; Le Mans 24 Hours winner; Formula 1 driver and now a trusted voice to millions in the Sky F1 commentary box.
Martin Brundle is inducted into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame this year, in recognition of his exceptional career behind the wheel and the microphone.
In this podcast, Brundle looks back at his racing career; his commentary break filling in for a missing James Hunt, and learning the ropes from fellow Hall of Fame inductee, Murray Walker, whose advice he follows to this day.
He talks about the struggle to keep up to date with F1 in the digital age and why he's secretly pleased that Covid put a temporary halt to his trademark grid walk.

Martin’s one liner that I remember is about a rookie pay driver who’s name I can’t remember. “I wouldn’t trust him to drive a nail into wood.”

2001 Brazilian GP qualifying: 'All he (Jenson Button) has got behind him is Mazzacane and Marques, neither of those 2 can drive a nail into a piece of wood, that's how slow that Benetton is at the moment'. I also remember that one, brilliant!

same here. Without him F1 would not be the same. I could not stand the Murray whines though. Martin's thick accent and clear and smart comments are the one we all need to better enjoy F1. I really liked the way he drove, he was not a big winner but drove well and now he does a great job as a presenter.

Very good interview. As a brazilian motorsport fan, the very first time that I`ve heard about Martin was in 1983 due to the big dispute between him and Ayrton. In 1984, I went to Jacarepagua track in Rio for the F1 Brazilian GP. Both Martin and Ayrton started their F1 career on that day. Brundle, driving for Tyrrell, finished the race in 5th place. Later he was disqualified. In my opinion, only in 1992, driving for Benetton, Martin has a true chance to drive a good F1 car. He deserved more opportunities to drive good F1 cars because he was a good driver.

Martin on Carlos Sainz and how he imagines a course through only his co-driver's pace notes, whilst he's going full bore through a forest. He pretty much explained why many people hold rally drivers in a higher regard to any other discipline of racing. Myself, included. Cracking interview 👍

Martin Brundle is a national treasure. He is a fantastic commentator and just seems like a genuinely nice person. I've been following f1 since 1997, so since his first year as a commentator alongside murray. Therefore, for me, martin has always been a fixture throughout the years. Drivers have come and gone, even other commentators but martin has been there throughout. Even though i obviously dont know him, listening to him talk is like listening to an old friend. Its a pleassure. Will be a sad day when he retires. Lets hope its not for a long time yet. We love you martin and your recgonition in the hall of fame is more than well deserved.

I met Martin's mum in a bar and chatted to her. I was so pleased with my new boat. I can't remember how driving came into the conversation. My focus was on my new purchase. Yet i asked and she told me her son was in F1. (as a dad I salute a parent proud of a son) She said who he was, and I had never heard of him. I guess he was a sort of journeyman driver. But as a commentator, he is on the podium. I felt with some humility his mom did really well dropping in her son was driving in F1. Was I shocked ?? no, I was impressed with his mums demeanor her style and honesty? I think this boy gets it from his mum. Oh just remembered, my name is also Martin and think that's how it came up. I like him.

I first saw Martin at Thruxton in F3 against Senna on two occasions. Then dozens of times in F1. I was at Monza in 1992 when he finished 2nd behind Senna, Silverstone below the podium when he was 3rd behind Mansell, and Le Mans in 1990. I spent 20 mins talking to him at Castle Coombe when his son was driving in Formula Palmer Audi, they say you shouldn't meet your heroes, what a gent he was that day!

I think Stefan Bellof the under rated one. People always talk about Ayrton at Monaco 84, look at Bellof in that race. another 5 laps and he`d be overtaking Senna. from last on the grid, after qualifying in a car with essentially a Cosworth DFV (essentially a 17 year old basic design by then, Qualifying for a spot on the grid in it was impressive).

Martin Brundle drove F1 when it was at it's most dangerous with screaming fast cars with little protection for drivers and track safety standards. A true Titan and Hero from that era and also a very accomplished sports car racer when sports cars were as fast as F1 cars and just as beautiful to look at. An all round great racer from the most exciting era in F1 and Sports Car racing.

I totally agree with Martin that we need cars that actually need the driver to keep it on the track and not a computer setting it's to bland these days like he said when your see jim Clarke sliding it into and out of corners that was racing not the modern drivers that go round a corner and if it doesn't trip they change a computer mode we need excitement we need true racing back where positions change overtaking has become a thing of the past mostly

Alonso did not take the mantle from Michael. In 2005, it was Kimi Raikkonen who was the fastest driver, and who was in the title fight with Alonso. Both of them beat Michael that year, and frankly, Kimi deserved that title a lot more than Fernando did.

I liked MB as a driver, always reliable and could often be very fast. He was the equal of the rapid Bellof at Tyrrell but not in the same league as Michael or Mika in his late career. He was a great commentator too, who always called out the often absurd decisions handed out by 'race control.' You don't hear any dissension from him these days and he always tows the party line, which is a shame. I guess it's in the contract.

Michael Masi need to go there is no excuse for fixing race you have to understand that Martin Brundle just did not want Lewis Hamilton to win that is why he support Michael Masi and want Michael Masi to stay, from a race director start fixing race that is a downhill slope and that is no good for formula 1, I lose all faith in cheating Michael Masi his reputation is tarnish and he need to go he is going to do more damage if he stay he is a cheater and he need to go for the good of formula 1 what I cannot understand the same thing that I saw is the same thing that Martin Brundle saw, but Martin Brundle see it differently Martin Brundle think that is good to have the race fix because he wanted Lewis Hamilton to lose, how could fixing race be any good
