This is not how I pictured the day I would pick up my brand new 2020 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R from the dealer. I crashed the bike within the first 5 min after picking it up from the dealership. The initial plan was to talk about the future upgrades and accessories that I would install to get this bike fit for off-road riding - that is the only reason I even had the camera rolling.
Well, I will still go into that in this video if you are interested - if you are just there to see a biker crash you do not have to scroll through the video as the video will start out with the crash after a very short intro.
The damage to the bike that day was minimal and much smaller than the damage to the ego ;-)

Seriously, simply sharing this video makes you severely cool. Congrats for staying on top of the situation and I fully understand the new tires. I never understood why all motorcycle tires are not delivered ready to ride. They figured out how to send rockets to space but not a "ready to ride" tire. Every sigle time I change the tires I must go easy the first 200-300km and gradually lean until tire is evenly worn. This happened to me too on a H2, the first 2 km. I managed to stay on the bike but the rear tire was all over the place sliding. I mean, come on, the chain that needs no lubrification has been invented but the tires are the same old story for the last 100+ years. This is long overdue development for all tire manufacturers.
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely nailed it! Hard to understand why manufactuers deliver a f**king greasy tire and expect riders to "ride off" the slippery stuff on the road rather than to add a wash cycle to the production process! Continental is a bit ahead on this game as their tires are delivered ready to ride - but you still have to break them in too - to avoid this from happening kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9OHfcWWkpabkac.html - I guess it is much easier to fly a man to the moon and bring him back safely. 😂

@@MotoVibes Additionally consider that usually (despite same "commercial" name, the "internal" serial/model is different I've noticed in some cases) OE tires are usually not the same as off the shelf tires. Usually they are cheap deals done with the manufacturers to supply the production lines. I've been in the habit to swap tires with new ones of my choice on new motorcycle right off from the dealer. to some a waste or pedantic behaviour... but ... you know.... i've kissed the asphalt too in the past :) :) ;)

@@ilmongolo good idea to just get what you want right when you buy it. I will need 2 sets - my off-road tires are installed on the smaller wheels right now - even though I would be curious to ride the R with a small off-road set once Vice versa take the large set to the track. 😉

That's really heartbreaking!!! Atleast you didn't get hurt. I dropped my GS in the 1st week, 1 day before the crash bars arrived. Nice that someone came straight over to help you and all the other car drivers where calm and had patience. Here in the UK people would just be shouting for you to get the bike out the way.

I used to work in a bike dealership, saw this first hand so many times, everyone picking up a new bike or new tyres was warned about the tyres and scrubbing in for at least the first 100 mphs. Normally it was the back stepping out from to much throttle on cold new tyres. It’s no joke.
@MotoVibes

Still baffles me that tire are even delivered and mounted that slippery on a motorcycle. You would think that in this day and age manufactures could make tires that do not that level of breaking in - well - at least Continental tires do not require breaking in time.

I agree. Many new bikes have all sorts on their tyres, from oil to polish + they're not scrubbed in. Rub some alcohol into the tyres & rough them up a bit with sand paper, else it might catch you out again.

First thing to do with new tires. Go to a dry parking lot and do figure eights. Lean as far as you dare at slower speed. Few minutes, done. New tires are soooo sketchy, and all the tech in the world won't stop that front tire from washing out.

Dropped my new 1290 R on a heavily cambered lane turning it around 3 days into ownership - to my shame had to get someone out of the local supermarket to help me pick it up! The damage was mostly scratches but made me put on more crash protection. Toured the Alps without mishap (but lots of luggage effectively lowered it a bit and Klim Outlander boots acted like platforms!). Was looking at lowering but test riding the 2021 1290 S next week (but cost of change will be £6K). Much much preferred the look of the old 1290 R vs old 1290 S - not so much with the 2021 versions. I’m 5ft 11ins - love my R when it is moving but it is so top heavy have to plan all stops and low speed manoeuvres carefully to ensure I can get a firm foot on the ground.

If you look back at the video your turning/pivoting/leaning with the new tires with speed RIGHT ON THE WHITE crosswalk MARKERS, those white stripe street markers are smooth, the change to a smooth surface abruptly and with the new tires caused this crash.

I am sure this made the whole thing worse. I thought the pavement itself was kinda slippery too but I went back there a few days ago and that was not the issue (unless there was a Diesel spill that got washed away since). Thank you very much - in the end I was very lucky not to have hit another car and I did not really get hurt - I called it a beginner’s mistake but a beginner probably would have been more careful with a brand new bike. It’s more an advanced rider’s mistake 😂😂

@@MotoVibes Very true. There are two major inverse bell curves typically associated with individual growth and experience. This is the Dunning-Kruger effect. In the beginning, an individuals initial gain of knowledge and experience in a subject leads many to a state of overconfidence in their abilities. Essentially, they think they know it all. LOL! As they grow more knowledgable and more experienced, they begin to understand how much they don't actually know, and their confidence in their abilities lowers. Somewhere around the "100 hour mark", many individuals experience a second rise in overconfidence, typically caused by normalization of deviance. In this case, they've began pushing boundaries, and each time they get away with it and nothing bad happens, this becomes their new normal, and they push a little further the next time. By this point, overconfidence can lead many to make simple mistakes they wouldn't have when they were younger and had less experience, because they think they are more capable than they are. Beyond this point, most people align their confidence to a point lower than their actual knowledge and experience, and a new danger zone forms... Complacency. Experts in their fields and masters of their crafts have grown so experienced and so knowledgeable, that they become complacent, often forgetting simple things they used to pay attention to before. This is more than likely the stage you are at my friend. It's not "good" nor "bad", just a learning moment, not to get complacent in the future. :D

Thank you very much Ian! In a way it is rediculous that we bikers have accepted to get greasy tires like this and are expected to "break in the tire" and "ride off" the grease on these tires in public traffic when it would be very easy to remove this grease from the manufacturing process with a simple wash cycle in the factory.

“The show must go on!”, and it did. Glad it wasn’t any more serious than it is. Now that you’ve had time to process this, what do you think actually happened? Do you blame it solely on tires, or was it also the road condition? Or, perhaps a little bit of rider error? Just curious because it looked really weird the way it happened. That said, keep on keepin’ on!
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 3 жыл бұрын
Well, main reason were the slippery tires - also the road seem more slippery than usual. It is a well know fact that tire need breaking in time - so this comes down to rider error - I underestimated how bad the tires were. With that said - It is actually almost criminal that tires like this actually get mounted on a motorcycle and us riders are expected to break them in in public traffic. What if you have to dodge something suddenly? You would most definitely crash the bike. In this day and age tire in this conditition should never be mounted on the bike - as far as I know only Continental actually has tires that have full grip right from the start. They still need to be broken in but they are not slippery like this.
