Thank you for sharing. Back in 1978 when I got my motorcycle license the instructor told us to keep a margin for error, gravel, water, dogs, deer and others. I would never brake that hard into a corner except in an emergency. Back then I did some riding in the Alps in the summers with a passenger and camping gear without any problems. Now, more than 100.000 km later, I still haven't had an accident - except for a puncture.

Main thing is that you're OK. Credit to you for having the courage to post this video and I think your post-crash analysis was pretty much correct. I'm not sure how insurance and accident damage is done in Germany but it might be good to see a video of this too if it is possible. By the way, I have toured Germany twice a year since 2010 but I have only covered the northern half of the country and I love Germany, I was hoping to start touring the south this year but I will have to be patient due to Covid and travel restrictions.

Thank you very much. I did not involve my insurance on this one. I have full coverage for my bikes and I agreed a high deductible- the insurance is only for serious damages or total loss. I hope I never need it. Traveling is just now picking up again. Just arrived in northern Italy- this is family time for the next 2 weeks - my next bike trip will be in August 😉

First, glad you're okay. That front tire looked like it was going to give your head a good whack. Second, happy to see you use an airbag. I never go anywhere without mine. Third, thanks for posting this as it it instructive. When I went down on a brand new K1600 it happened really fast and with no warning. The bike was totaled but all I got was a sprained ankle. Even with lots of track time on an S1000RR, you never know when it's going to happen to you. Keep the great vids coming.

Thank you mate - really apreciate your comment. Totalling a brand new K1600 must have sucked - I hope you had some kind of insurance - that is not a cheap bike to crash ;-) I absolutely agree - I spent time on the track and now have quite a few KM under my belt but I knew this day going to come sooner or later - In additition to the airbag vest I upgraded most of my armor in my pants and jacket - so I had Level 2 armour everywhere - it is a small upgrade worth every penny - my Klim gear came with Level 1 armor only at the time.

Nice Video as usual. I think you are very brave to show your crash and ask for an opinion from the Internet. The KTM crashes well with the various protection you have added although you will probably be finding more things as time goes on. Shame about the Akrapovic. On your ananlysis of the crash, it seems like good reasoning. One thing I note is that you push the bike under like an off road rider, rather than lean into the corner as a track rider would do, which means the bike is leaned over more than would otherwise be the case. it is a long shot but perhaps this would alter the outcome. All videos of myself on track seem slow, so the fact yours look quick and interesting probably mean that you travel rather faster into corners than I do! Glad you were not injured and able to ride out. All's well that ends well!
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 4 жыл бұрын
thank you for nice comment. I hope this lesson learned can help others - if it prevents just a single crash from someone else it would be all worth it. I do lean to the inside of the corner (not as much as I do on the track) but some - it did help to keep the impact lower too as I was close to the ground already. BUT the crash really got me by suprise. ;-)

Liking your honesty..glad all cosmetic damage and a dent or two in the ego...when we screw up it’s good to hold up our hands... been there but with the high side variety ... I’ve been up and down the Bormio side a few times now ... one of your subs mentioned about the camber imperfections on that road... I’d have to concur ...contributory factor for sure... I don’t have ABS on my Tiger so always unweight the F end by taking these type pins wide , finish the braking before leaning , positive throttle action/ open, and power out ... not saying you do but lean angle ABS systems do promote too much reliance on tech ... like you said physics and Moto Stelvio photo opp...collided into a bad soup... Ya man you were rippin around that switchback pretty hard. I have learned very quickly that with this bike since the seating position is so high it does give the rider a false sense of security. The bike handles so well that it is relatively easy to push it over the limits, especially since you really dont feel like you are going that fast even though you are. I know this because I have ridden the exact same roads on my CBR929 and felt like I could go faster on just about every part of the road on the KTM SAS... I am definitely going to invest in some very grippy road tires for the KTM SAS! After ridiin this weekend in the mtns with my wife I inspected both tires and did notice the rear it appeared that on some sections of the tire I did slip but then caught traction again....Love my bike though!

Thank you Alex - I can absolutly recommend axle sliders - they are not really cheap but the parts they protect are much more expensive. They did a good job protecting the front fork and rear swing arm from scratches. However, that is all the protect from - is scratches - if you are not worried about scratches in your bike you could save yourself the money ;-)

Thanks for the video, less experienced riders can watch and learn; I noticed that your chest made contact with the front wheel of the bike, when it was sliding. Did the Helite vest worked as promised?
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 4 жыл бұрын
The vest deployed but I am not sure if it was fully filled with air yet - it should have been. This part is hard to remember ;-) some of the impact into the bike while sliding was to my lower body (not seen in the video) - I also moved my hands and arms up to push the bike away from me. The chest protection is one of the great benefits of having an airbag vest - most road riding gear has zero chest protection.

Thank you for your excellent video! It looks like you were carrying good speed entering the corner. Your entry could have been more to the right and deeper into the curve to set up your exit of the turn. Because your trail braking was a little late and your line was now tighter when you tilted to turn left past the apex and on the steep grade of the surface, your rear tire lost its traction... down you went. If you enter into corners a little wider and deeper, you have more braking options without losing traction. Also, you see the apex and exit more clearly. A tighter entry line does not allow much room for line options or braking adjustments. Hopefully, you can picture what I wrote!

The answer is in 0:02 of your intro. You take your butt of the seat and that's ok but you keep your head on the bike. The head weights 5 kg and gives better leverage. Lean angle was way more your bike and tires could handle. When riding an on off tourer limits come sooner than a street or a supersport bike. You said that you probably trailed the brakes longer into the turn past the apex. Doing so would sweep the front, not your case. Glad to see you weren't hurt and your bike sustained almost minor damages, equipment did a fine job protecting you and the bike. Its nice to see people taking their safety seriously

I think you are right that you were still braking late as you can see the handlebars jerk left right as it starts to slide. Rear wheel got too light and with that speed and angle, lost grip. As soon as it slid out a tiny bit, you were still releasing the brake and that's why the bars went left suddenly. Minimal damage to both of you! That's great. Thanks for the share!

Good thing you ended up fine. Very educational. Based on my similar experience (crash on similar downhill hairpin on BMW R1150R, and that bike is very stable and forgiving to braking in corners due to telelever ) change of geometry while braking did not bring you down. Speed and angle of lean brought you down. When you lost the traction on rear you were doing 44km/h. That was way too fast for that corner. Actually you made mistake on a corner before entering it at around 80km/h. There was not enough lenght of road to reduce speed to safe 30km/h. If lean was not as drastic tyre would regrip, it would shake you a bit but it is likely that you'd recover. In your case tyre was lifted of the ground as minor slip caused frame to pick the tarmac. I've learned my lesson hard way too however with lot less damage to the bike. My rule of thum is: Downhill hairpins on a narrow road seem to be safe (on a public road) up until 30km/h. 40 is risky, 50 plain dangerous. I often wonder why people rush on Stelvio pass. Not that they are riding it every day. Makes more sense to go slow and enjoy the scenery. In your case you also had empty road and that is luxury on Stelvio so one more reason to slow down and enjoy scenery ! 😃

@beartrader_redartraeb

Disagree regarding the speed recommendations. Your speed limit in bends incl. hairpins depends on road conditions and riding skills. Without proper riding skills people fail to get in an "elegant, smooth, and safe way" through hairpins. To my opinion the Spluga pass (Italian side) is more challenging than Stelvio - and more fun. With a proper riding technique, uphill as well as downhill. Give it a try when you're in that area again (border b/t Italy and Switzerland). Happy riding - particularly mastering hairpins!

@chrismalton1904
@chrismalton1904 4 жыл бұрын
@@MotoVibes Thanks for the welcome, the main reasons for moving over to the KTM were that I felt BMW had lost it's quality, the GS exhaust system was showing signs of corrosion likely due to using a lower quality stainless steel for cost saving, also there were signs of future engine corrosion even though I never used the bike in the winter and kept it immaculate, I had to have the center stand repainted due to corrosion also, not what you'd expect from a premium brand. I tried the new 1250GS but it just felt a little dull, when BMW moved to liquid cooling the engine character was lost, the last aircooled twin cam boxer was a great bike, but obvious power gains came with the liquid cooling. Also there was nothing to say the quality had improved. Also the new GS was £16800 and the KTM £15200. The KTM felt much more exciting. The only negative for the KTM was the seat height as I'm 170cm but the dealer said they can lower the bike by 25mm and it felt lighter than the GS anyway. Also the KTM dealer is only 5 miles from my home, the 2015 bikes they had for sale showed no signs of corrosion also. I'll miss the shaft drive of the BMW but a small price to pay. Oh and finally I've never had a vee twin of that layout. I've had triples, 4 cylinder bikes (no character), parallel twins and singles and I also currently have a V7 Moto Guzzi. I love the Guzzi but just not ideal for high miles/distance touring.

Thank you Chris - it is interessting to your your story. I actually had a range of quality issue with my 2016 BMW R 1200GS Triple Black - they were all fixed under warranty but still. The clutch cylinder leaked which left me with no working clutch in an instant - I had to get the bike towed. That was after 6500 km on the bike. The header pipes of the exhaust had to get replaced because the " exhaust flap" was not opening fully anymore. The front suspension was recalled and replaced and a the left controls (with the switches) was replaced because some of the switches got stuck. This all in the first 2 years. I am sure that is not necessarily representative but it is a lot of stuff that broke. I have heard others had similar issues with their KTMs so maybe I am lucky for now - zero issues with mine so far. The main reason for me for the KTM was the increased excitement and character of the bike - just love the grunt & power of the V2 engine. AND it better bang for the buck - most of the feature came standard with the KTM that cost extra on the BMW - Anyway - enjoy your new KTM and I hope you will have zero troubles with it and NO crashes ;-)

The worst part of that fall seems to be the front wheel hitting your hand. You really did get lucky. Bruises will heal. Shattered wrist not so much.

You are very honest in the description of the crash. You got away without any injuries! Maybe it was oil/dirt. Maybe paying too much attention to the photographer and maybe just too much speed with too much angle! You'll never know but hopefully it won't happen again. Cheers

My take is body position error. Looks like it could've been saved by leaning the upper body into the turn, lifting the bike up. It's clear in other turns earlier in the video that he's pushing the bike down instead of up, decreasing the ground clearence. Glad he's ok! :) /keyboard warrior

@@ale.wist. True! But if you lift the bike up, you also give the tires more rubber to work with and it may handle small slides better. But sometimes you just crash anyway. :)

What angle and what angle? Angle was good, speed was good, all the bike slided front and rear together to the outside... the problem here was the shity tyres.

@@Postmjoelk That is exactly what I saw, wrong body position. I've been riding only a few years but I'm amazed how many people cannot lean, I'd even say most cannot lean the right way. In these kind of tight curves especially it's imperative to try to keep the bike as straight as possible and use your body to take the weight to the inner curve (just as you said).

Unfortunately there are a few videos of experienced riders crashing the KTM 1290 SAS on KZfaq. From what others have said the bike is so good that it doesn’t seem to give you the feeling of when it’s reaching its limit especially at the rear. I’m not not too sure if this is what happened to you but so glad you are ok 👍

I have had no problems with this bike in the past 35.000 km where I have ridden in all kinds of situations including a race track (for training only through). Then again - it those places you least expect where you fall ;-)

Your crash was almost identical to the one I had this summer (July 2020). Fairly low speed hairpin corner (turning left). My front tire hit some gravel that had been dumped in the middle of the road about a meter past the apex and as I started to accelerate my bike (BMW S1000XR) just dumped me as quick if not quicker than yours did in the video. Unfortunately for me I did not have an air vest and as a result broke two ribs - a very painful experience. Anyway thanks for sharing 👍🏼

Thanks for sharing your experience - I hope you are better now. Did this happen on a longer trip? I assume you could not ride for a while with 2 broken ribs and the bike probably took some damage as well. I actually got to ride the XR for the first time last September in the alps.

@@MotoVibes It was on a longer trip and happened about 15 minutes after we stopped for lunch. Unfortunately the insurance company wrote the bike off and as I'm now fully recovered, I am starting to look for a replacement. I am going to test ride a 2019 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S today. I would love to get your opinion on which you think is the better all round bike - the S1000XR or the SAS 1290. Many thanks. Darren

@@darrenmaughan60 Wow - that is horrible! You are hurt, the bike is totaled and the tour ends right there - these were the exact thoughts going through my head immediately after the crash. Well, there is one big plus point for the KTM - it is a little more robust than the XR (things would have looked different if the bike would have slid into a guardrail etc). For alpine roads I prefer the KTM 1290 over the XR hands down. The low end torque out of the hairpin turns rocks - I had the XR pinned right out of the turn and seconds went by before the bike would start to accelerate - I tried keeping the revs up for better power delivery - it works better but the engine sound would annoy me a bit. I think the XR is better suited for long sweeping turns - not so much the tight stuff in the Alps. I was pleasantly surprised how awesome the brakes are on the XR - massive power that is easily controllable with 2 fingers. I thought the KTM had good brakes until I rode the XR ;-) But see what you think - you may like the engine characteristic of a 4-cylinder engine better. I did have a great time on the XR and was happy that I finally got to ride it for a full day - however, it is not I bike I would buy for myself.

Hello good morning, I have the same bike and I think for this type of driving it is better to put the sport mode of suspension. Street mode and comfort sets the anti-sinking mode on the fork and can lock it in a strong braking

@@viqui2002 I would agree with that - I have my bike set to sport damping 90-95% of the time. Even if the pavement gets a bit bumpy. I use Street (medium damping) when the road gets really bad. I have not really used the softest damping setting yet. The firm sport setting will not really impact your riding comfort on good pavement but will give you a sportier firmer setup when accelarating and braking hard (minimize movemet of the bike). it will also give you a better "feel" for the road than a soft setup that "swallows" the bumps in the road. I hope that makes sense.
