Mount Airy was settled in the 1750s as a stagecoach stop on the road between Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Galax, Virginia. It was named for a nearby plantation. Mount Airy was incorporated in 1885. The city's official seal was established in 1977, which depicts major industries that are home to Mount Airy including: furniture, textiles, and the granite quarry. In 1994, Mount Airy was named an All American City.
The W. F. Carter House, William Carter House, Edgar Harvey Hennis House, William Alfred Moore House, Mount Airy Historic District, North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry Complex, Renfro Mill, and Trinity Episcopal Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Actor Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy, and the town is believed to have been the basis for Mayberry, the setting of the TV shows The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD. The community holds an annual "Mayberry Days" celebration during the last weekend of September; 30,000 attended in 2009, and 50,000 attended for the show's 50th anniversary in 2010. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro estimates the town receives $5 million each year as a result. Surviving members of the cast, along with family members of other cast members, often visit. The 2012 event was slated to have Karen Knotts (Don's daughter) and George Lindsey Jr. (eponymous son of the actor who portrayed Goober).
Several Ford Galaxie police cars, painted to resemble those used on the show, give rides to guests. A barber shop has been named "Floyd's."
The Andy Griffith Museum, founded in 2009 by Emmett Forrest, attracts 200 visitors a day. The 2,500-square-feet museum, located half a mile from Griffith's childhood home, houses the world's largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia.

This is the town of Mayberry what Mt. Airy is based that is the inspiration of the Andy Griffith Show. This is Andy Griffith childhood home. Nice small town.

Hello great video a group of us rode the bikes up there last year on our way to wva spent the night took a tour of the town it was neat seeing all the stores and site of mayberry great little town

Never been to Mt. Airy but I do know that it's the town that inspired the Andy Griffith show. That show was pretty good, Barney was a cool character

I was there last weekend. Had a great time there! You can tell this was filmed before 11am. After that, the line for Snappy Lunch is usually about 20 deep.

Tourists come there expecting Mt Airy to actually be " Mayberry"... They are shocked to see it's nothing like Mayberry. Population is around 15 thousand, lots of restaurants stores and traffic.. Mayberry is not Mt Airy

Mount airy actually has only 10,000 people, the town is only busy on Highway 601 and Highway 52, every other part of the town including Main Street is not busy and resembles that small town Mayberry, I do agree however that out town swells during festivals or on weekends

@@BlueDino07 5,000 more moved there yesterday. Lol .. kidding, but I grew up 25 miles from there, I'm in my early 40s, and as far back as my child hood memories can go back to the early 80s nothing downtown has ever had a close resemblance to " Mayberry". Downtown is absolutely huge compared to the " Mayberry" set. There has always been flea markets, a large Hispanic population, a mall, shopping centers,. Maybe in the 60s or 70s it resembled Mayberry , but in my life time I've never seen a resemblance. Even Andy himself once said in an interview " people think Mayberry is based on my home town but it's not"..

@@freedomisntfree2089 Exactly, I was just reading your comment. What people have to remember is, Mayberry is and was, a Hollywood creation in every way possible, from the backlot in Hollywood, to the story of how the people lived and did things in that fictional town. Yes, Hollywood did do a pretty good job of capturing that "Southern Hospitality" way of life in the show, but with rose tented glasses on. To be honest, I think that most people are actually in love with the fictional Hollywood version of Mayberry, not real life small town life like what you see in Mount Airy North Carolina. People want small towns like Mount Airy to be just like Mayberry, but it's not, and never will be. It's fantasy, that's all.
