We have an updated & much better version of this video here - • SRAM vs. Shimano Brake...
The SRAM vs. Shimano brake debate is a long-lasting one and a topic that has divided mountain bikers for years. While both brands offer options for all levels of riding, the way in which they deliver stopping power varies significantly. Rather than pick which one is better, we decided to compare the two back to back and point out the key differences. Hopefully, this clears up the confusion and helps you better decide which are right for you!
Although you can’t go wrong with SRAM or Shimano, the amount of personal preference involved when picking your own set cannot be overstated. Performance for both is top-notch however, the way in which they deliver it could not be more different. Looking to stop on a dime? Shimano will be your best friend. Want more modulation? SRAM is going to be best for that. Either way, you are getting a quality set of brakes that will improve confidence out on the trail.

When you consider how the human body can adapt and conform to our injuries and weaknesses you simply havent tried hard enough if you cant adapt to different feeling brakes! If you experiment with your lever and control’s position, youd be surprised what a difference it can make. Try setting up brake levers so they make braking contact closer to the bars. Move levers inward on bars so your forefinger pulls at the end hook on the lever. You get much better mechanical advantage from your hands that way. I brake with one finger. That way my Shimano brakes dont feel grabby at all, most of my hand holds the bar and I have the most possible leverage with one finger tip. If you have to brake really hard, scoot your hand in to use 2 fingers. Simple!

I just switched to zee's from guides and am so happy. Zee's have a more predictable early lever bite that the guides lack. The guides felt spongey and the lever action was very sloppy, unlike the shimanos whixh have solid build quality and a tight lever feel.

Yes. Sram is for Neanderthals who can only grab the brakes full on, and need a brake that won’t tbrow them over the bars. I love grabby “snappy” brakes that I can give a light touch to and they will always have enough bite. I have that with shimanos.

Shimano SLX came on my Pivot 5.5 on the build kit I could afford. 7 months of riding and I have had absolutely zero noise from brakes. Always had to be cleaning rotors on my Sram brakes on older bike because of howling. No issues with modulating braking, love these brakes. I am NOT going to miss de-gassing the dot 3 fluid on bleeding process, but I have not had to bleed brakes Shimano yet.

Shimano XT fan.....SRAM did have a recall on the Guide brakes in 2017...oversized main piston (lever) caused the pistons to get stuck down if they got too hot, as a mechanic at a bike park I had to deal with over 100 sets of warranties last summer. SRAM is great about replacing/fixing without question but never once have I seen a Shimano brake warranty/recall.

I have XTs on one bike and Guide REs on another.... while the Guides have more "modulation", I have no problems modulating the XTs... to a point where I wouldn't buy one or the other on that selling point. Durability and servicing puts the Shimanos on top of my list so much so that when the Guides need the 1st bit of service Ill just replace them with Shimanos instead.

I have two top of the line bikes that came with SRAM brakes. They both dragged slightly after a short while. Now with XTR, no drag at all and I have no idea about poor modulation. They modulate fine. They were easy to cut lines and bleed at install. All four brakes feel great and perform exactly the same. Mineral oil is a huge plus with Shimano also
@jackfederski7646
@jackfederski7646 6 жыл бұрын
You said it, the most important aspect to the feel of the brake is how it is bled. It is much more difficult to properly bleed the SRAM brakes, so in practice, the Shimano will feel better. I had two sets of lower end bikes with SRAM Elixer 3. I spent so much time trying to properly bleed the brakes, and I couldn't solve the brake howling problem (many forum, 2011 stumpy FSR). I bought the cheapest Shimano, threw them on, and they solved all of the problems instantly. Also, the SRAM Avid Elixers have a weird mutli-dimensional bushing system where it can be aligned in several dimensions including tilt. It took awhile to get it perfect. The shimanos were straight block on block mounting. Threw them on, aligned them quickly, and good to go. Many times better. Shimano ALL THE WAY!

I've bought myself a set of used Sram Guide Ultima's. Probably because the owner didn't like them very much. But it turned out they had the known issue with the seized piston in the levers. So I took the time to learn about the brakes, bought myself 2 upgraded lever overhaul kits with the new revised pistons and a Sram bleeding kit. Then again, I took the time to fix the levers, bleed the system according al the great KZfaq instructions available. And voilà! A set of perfect Sram Guide Ultima's for half the price! And then I upgraded them with some sintered brake pads. Man oh man... They are now the best brakes I've ever used. Even al my friends who tried them agree. But like I said, learn to know them, it's not that hard, and learn to service them yourself. And take your time to do this. You'll be very pleased of the result.

Hearing people say how there brakes don't feel the same after 4 months of riding of course not they need regular maintenance. I most ride bike park and I bleed my brakes once a month. Sram have been some of the worst brakes I've every use. My guides the lever would always stick warranty it 4 times for the same thing and had to bleed them every couple of days been on shimano's ever since with no issues.

As a mechanic myself, I find shimano's are far easier to bleed, mineral oil being less harsh on your skin (if spilled), and doesn't turn acidic and destroying the brake (if not changed every 2-6 months in wet climate). BUT cheap shimano's/tektro's tend to leak from the piston o-rings more often + no spare parts, except for complete calibers/levers. So go for shimano if you like the firm brake feel and/or live in a wetter climate. Or go for SRAM if you live in a dry climate and want better modulation. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with other brands :(

I prefer Shimano, not having any problems with modulation. They dont have alot of travel after they engage, but once youve gotten used to pressure, as opposed to travel, controlling the "bite" it feels really, really awkward to go back to something that essentially feels and behaves more like youd expect it from mechanical brakes. You gotta say tho, that if you occasionally switch between your Trailbike and lets say a Commuter, that comes with V-Brakes, your having a much easier time not adapting to 2 completely different brake charachteristics.

I compare these brakes to different sensitivities in a first person shooter video game. Shimano brakes utilize a high sensitivity which requires less physical input. I used to like modulation of my Juicy’s. They rubbed constantly after 3 years. No matter what I tried. They still look great though!Pretty much dumpster filling though!They were replaced by SLX. The issues I had are very common on Sram breaks. I have XTs that are a year older than the juicy’s. They work fine. Still trust my life with them!! All my brakes are flushed and bled at least once a year. If you expect your stuff to perform and last, you gotta maintain it! DOT fluid ( whats in Srams)absorbs water, it also hardens piston seals, hence the dragging. DOT fluid will mess up your paint. Many people forget Shimano is the biggest parts manufacturer. They can engineer and test better than anyone else. They seem to do it before parts reach the market too. Srams been having some quality issues lately, before that the Elixirs were hated by mechanics everywhere and I already mentioned Juicy’s.

Alot of Shimano fans in the comment section ;) Personally i prefer Magura (with upgraded levers since their own are crappy), but between SRAM and Shimano, i would choose SRAM, it does not bother me in the least that i have to pull the lever 4cm instead of 1cm to make the SRAM:s lockup compared to Shimano, those extra 3cm gives me linear modulation, i will never understand why Shimano guys want an on/off switch instead of 3cm extra modulation.

Because u can modulate shimanos with just an ever so slight feathering of the brake with barely any finger pull... Just got to get used to them.. They are second nature to me 10 years in.

Loved my m8000 XT brakes for years, hated my SRAM RS initially, then i swapped the pads it helped... upgraded to RSC and found them to be very capable brakes. Until I learned to bleed them properly I was never 100% about them, but after a good bleed and figuring out how to pressurize the system slightly I love my SRAM RSC's! I would happily own either XT or RSC or higher models.

Excellent video and finely explained. I am in the route to buy a new bike but I rather prefer mechanical disc brakes, Unfortunately, the majority of top brands are selling hydraulic disc brakes. Yes, I thinks Shimano and TPR are the best for common joes. SRAM spongy, hummmm no good.
@teamramrodmtb
@teamramrodmtb 6 жыл бұрын
It's not that they're spongy, there's more modulation from engagement to lockup. Shimano brakes are more touchy, which feels good for experienced riders, but can actually get dangerous if you throw a complete beginner on a bike with Shimano brakes. I know because my first real bike has Shimano brakes on it. I like them now that I know what they're capable of, but almost went OTB my very first time riding it. SRAM brakes are more forgiving for beginners and a lot of experienced riders prefer them too.

I can tell you as a 6'6 300lb rider that SRAM brakes just don't work as well, I actually had my 160's glowing red hot going down a hill and they are now permanently discolored. I ordered some Shimano Brakes with 203mm in the front and 180mm rear to get that mass to stop.

I have the Shimano XT 4 piston brakes. After the pads were nicely bedded and the levers were moved in closer for my hands, I noticed a more 'controlled' modulation on the XT 4 piston brakes over the sram guide r brakes. They don't have as big of a window, but they don't feel like a sponge either. Again, they just feel more controlled; dialed. The bad side is that they aren't quite here in the states yet. I had to order from across seas.

Ha remember Avids? Jucies? Elixirs? I’ll never forget.. Shimano for the win 🤘(why did sram have to to change the brand name so many times 😆😉 maybe because your brakes were beyond terrible) with shimano the pistons retract perfectly every time with enough room so you can actually adjust the brakes without scrub.. the brakes last forever. if you can’t modulate a shimano brake then maybe you need to work on your riding 😂

East Coast Film my worst DH crash i was using the juicy 5 brakes, i was on a nice high speed straight and when i need to brake and scrub speed for a jump they decided not to work. I over shot my safe landing zone and into the rock garden, my front wheel hit a rock sticking up and into an instant OTB i went. My right leg looked like if was chewed up by jaws. I had to throw my favorite platform pedal shoes in the trash because of all the blood that stained them. I got home and I took them brakes off and smashed the shit out of them and then i ordered Hayes Stroker Ace and to this day I still think the Aces are awesome brakes... 8 years and not one single problem! I’m building my new DH bike and I’m researching my options as I’m giving my old DH bike with the Aces to my kid because I trust them to not fail him. My 2 choices to date are TRP G-spec Quadiems and the saints. Modulation doesn’t matter to me i just want to stop when i mashed my brakes. Suggestions appreciated.

I like to use Shimano, because I modulate my braking through feel and experience, and don't want somebody to hold my hand when I drive/ride. P.S. : I like to know when they will fail than be without brakes..... I can't sense that well in Sram when they start burning and loose their properties, because of the modulation and not having a crisp brake movement (the more you press, the more it brakes). Girlfriend likes Sram because she's more of a press 101% on brakes and hope to skid.... But I can vouche that those brakes try their utter best to not get bleeded well (not only by me, but by tech's too)

If you like Shimano but are looking for more lever modulation, run a pair of XTR Race levers. They don't have Servo Wave, so they offer a lot more range to the bite over say an XT lever. If you want to save money, they'll work with XT calipers without a problem.

I prefer the mineral oil of Shimano, but short of perhaps Hope, there's no better looking lever than a silver Guide. If someone doesn't need a ton of power, and wants modulation, The M395/396 Acera level Shimano brakes might work. Yet to try a set of SRAMS. Nevertheless I have a few comments. First of all, living in England I can say that there's few things worse than riding a downhill section of pavement by a trail in the autumn, coming across a thin layer of cold wet and slimy algae like composting leaves right as you need to stop, pulling your front brake and consequentially having the wheel lock-up beneath you as you find yourself in that super slow-motion heart in your mouth moment where you know, you just fucked up, you're twisting the handlebars and the bike is still going forwards and oh my god you'd better save it... of course there is something worse than that, doing the same thing, in winter, on a frosty downhill section of pavement as a car pulls out from a side road infront of you. I've experienced both. Wheelies aside I think the beauty of modulation is mostly found in the autumn/winter months of colder climates in addition to loose gravel path cornering anywhere else. I guess it depends what you're doing and where you are, if I lived somewhere hot like greece, cali or florida and all I was doing was speeding up and down the resort in the baking sunshine living the life, it would be shimano everytime, for messing around ore even just commuting in the Scottish highlands though, I'd definitely wanna give SRAM a try, sometimes, modulation really can be a lifesaver and it's not always about how quickly you can stop with one finger breaking.

Digital (on/off) brakes or with modulation.. Definitly a personal preference :-) I love powerful brakes with a bigger range of modulation for long and steep descends. I was superhappy with my guide RSC but switched bikes and also to Magura. They come really close to the quality of Hope, but are way less expensive and have 3 kinds of levers levers to fit the needs of the rider. Also bleeding is a dream ^_^

Worldwide Cyclery I’ve been running hope e4 with 203mm rotors front and rear for a while. First on my Yeti 5.5 now on my Pole Evolink 140. They are fantastic brakes and def err on the side of monster modulation. My buddy who ran saint with 203 rotors felt like he had no brakes at all riding my bike, as he was used to a near total on/off feel as opposed to hope which only “lock” when you intentionally pull to lock the wheel. Everything else is sweet sweet modulation, which is right up my alley. Plus they are the sickest looking brakes on the market for sure.

Worldwide Cyclery -They look sweet. Aesthetics are awesome. Hah, seriously tho... -braking power maintained on long technical descents (that’s with 183 front and 160 rear for a bigger guy) -Maintenance free, the one thing on my bike that just works. Just replace pads. No dragging, no stuck pistons, never/rarely need to bleed, no warped rotors. Simple to adjust/center caliper. They are reportedly easy to bleed but I don’t know, because I’ve never needed to. -I like the lever design, works well for 1 finger braking. Also lever adjustability. -Right combination of modulation and power. -Love the 2 piece rotor design. Some will disagree, but I think it helps dissipate heat. Plus they look cool. I know sram and shimano have some of these features, but I’ve had multiple sets of high end avid/SRAMs and was always fighting maintenance issues and constantly adjusting to keep them from running/dragging. I have about 2000 + miles on my current set of E4s and all I’ve done to them is change pads. Only time I needed to center caliper is when I mounted the fronts up to a new fork.
