A POV for the Holy Cross Trail and finished with Bentonite hill at the the lunch loops in Grand junction. Overview, if you loop Petekes to HCT and follow up with Curt's Lane, you are looking at around a 7 mile loop. HCT maintains very technical climbing sections which are some of the toughest in the Grand Valley. The descents are mostly technical rollers and gaps with no mandatory drops. There are multiple line options that can include rolling step ups followed by small to small/medium drops. HCT is a great ride for an average 1.25 hours loop or can be combined with either Free Lunch or Eagle's Wing. OR EVEN BETTER Ribbon, climb to Free Lunch, Widowmaker Hill, and Holy Cross for the premier Lunch Loop experience.
Bentonite Hill is a shortcut from the Raven Ridge back to the Tabeguache double track that shortens and steepens the route back to the trailhead. Bentonite is exceptionally steep for a mostly dirt trail with loose conditions at times and shouldn't be attempted in heavy winds (wind exceeding 40 mph). Learn from the fool don't be the fool. Over all it features a difficult roller entrance that can be accessed a medium drop with speed and the rest is pretty steep and fast with a few fast drops. It is comparable to Zippety at 18 rd. except with a longer steep run then both Zip Crux trails and no braking bumps (which is very nice). I hope people find this helpful and excuse the gimbal "squeak" in parts of the POV.

RC, great video. Like all the climbs. And hike-a-bike. More realistic to a true ride. Also, like talking to co-pilot. Good job.

I like the informative side on your vids, it helps mortals like me to have a better idea of what to expect on a specific trail. I'm planing to visit GJ and Moab next october and a nice discovery was the Hawkeye trail on your channel, our plan was to do Horsethief, Steves loop and back, but now the Hawkeye is a much better way (funcut lol) to go back to the parking. And now, after doing the Ribbon we were supposed to take Gunny loop but I don't know anymore. Thanks for the welcome and keep the good work.

Rode this for the first time last night and wish the GoPro showed how truly steep it is in parts! Super fun trail though, and like you said, just blast through it

Jeff J! Yeah, this trail is nothing to scoff at and there is alot of GoPro effect going on! Some really difficult riding on this one, but blasting through it works every time! thanks for the commentary and the support!

Thinking of riding this soon; what exact route did you take? I don’t know the area at all.

Awesome video and location for this recording, for someone on a budget who wants to get into MTB recording/vlogs, would you recommend a Go Pro Session 5 with a chest mount strap?

Thanks DjTherapy! Obviously I'm not sure what kind of bank roll you have to put into the vlogs, but the best and tried and true setup for me and a lot of other KZfaqrs has been the GoPro Hero 4 black and run it "naked" on a chest mounted gimbal. This camera gets the crystal clear picture and audio, just be sure to cover the mic with a mic beard. Between both an Evo gimbal SS $250 and a GoPro Hero 4 Black depending on what you are looking for, probably $550. I don't think any of the GoPro Session provides great sound, but I've never tried one. They do mount up well on different parts of the bike for different perspective shots. The session on a chest mount can be used, but I would definitely frequently change positions with lots of shots and perspectives to make the video flow better.

What trail is that 8 foot drop on at the lunch loops....maybe free lunch I don't remember. I rode there a few years ago and loved it.

Its actually Andy's loop, between little park road and the ribbon.

That drop/roll at 11:26 always gets me sketched out...

Dude, I think that sketch roller on bentonite is probably harder than the Gunny's. Obviously there is that one rock midway that you have to aim for on the roll but the entrance is super weird. I got it my first try a long while back, but then proceeded to walk it for a while after. lol. The better I got at mountain biking the more I truly began to appreciate Tabeguache, especially, the Ribbon/Freelunch/Holy Cross combo, which if shuttled is probably my favorite in the GV. I would like to like Eagle's Wing, but the rollers on that are SUPER sketch and exposed!

RC LeFevre - I've been riding/hike-a-biking/shame-walking a lot of those with my hardtail... Yet when I demo a full sus, I seem to do just fine... Maybe after my full sus comes in I'll have to get the "locals tour" from you, to know the best ways to ride the lunch loops. My first time out there I did everything wrong. I climbed UP Curt's... And the whole time I was thinking that the LL were just for tech wizards... I love it now :)

Yes sir, we can make that happen. You bring an interesting point. I always want to be in the camp that its the rider, not the bike, but I've been through a lot of bike and I'm in the school that confidence inspiring bikes definitely make riders better. I used to try to take small drops on a short travel XC bike and they always spooked me because of the bottom out and threat of going OTB. As I progressed through bikes I found those drops to be easier and "safer" with better equipment and my riding improved significantly, to the point where I could take the old bike out and have the confidence. I find the bikes with the slack head tube sufficient at correcting my mistakes and allowing me to clean the feature! My point is its not you Shane! Its your bike lol. Funny you bring up climbing Curt's, a guy at a bike shop was telling me that the climb up Curt's is spectacular and he was totally serious. Considering all the hikers and traffic up Pet-e-kes, I think he was on to something.

RC LeFevre - yeah... My 71° headtube hardtail isn't as confidence inspiring as 65- 66° ... And I would consider climbing up Curt's again... It just wasn't a great first impression (especially with riders rippin' down it )
