The objective of Mountain Man is to show the artwork that goes into creating and designing walking canes and sticks, using the ancient art form of woodcarving. This film will give a brief overview of the art by following a walking cane designer through his creation and development process.

Watch oil is my favorit finish stick with 200 sand paper and apply the Watco oil with a clean rage let stand for 10 min's they wipe it down with a white rag every couple of hr.'s till no color is on the white cloth, let dry a couple of days and presto your cane is finish. if you want to varnish later use varathane ( not nessary)

I live in Alaska and I am a staff maker at the age of 34 I just started with staffs and I have quite a bit of tools. I'm not great but I've made a couple very beautiful ones, right now I'm starting to try to learn how to carve and etch wood, but to learn how to make diamond willow be as beautiful as the ones in your thumbnail, I need more training please! I just saw this video for the first time. I see you posted about the decline in "Mountain Man's" health a year ago. Of course I am so sorry that he and the one's close to him were struggling, and of course however things turned out I only hope that you all are at peace, hoping he recovered from his sickness, or if his time was finished on this side of his journey I only hope that he is peaceful now with no suffering. He appeared to be the type of fella that everyone would benefit from knowing, I think I would have been honored if I could have known this wise gentleman, I know he could have taught me a lot, not only with his such beautiful walking sticks that I too so enjoy creating, but I am quite sure he could have taught me a lot more just about life with his unique, yet simple and comfortable wisdom of words and conversation. Thank You Mr. Mountain Man for allowing me the pleasure of a glimpse into your world , if only for a brief moment that made such a feeling of goodness in my heart, that feels like much more than a moment. I hope where ever you are at you are at peace , and know you have left a impression that is priceless, and to me it does not get any better than that.

I've got a twisted vine walking stick. It was rough when I got it. I cleaned it thoroughly and clear coated it with a rattle can. It sealed up nicely. I've got a crutch tip on the bottom and I'm waiting to receive my cue ball in the mail. I'm gonna dremel the cue ball until it fits over the top, then 2 part epoxy the cane into it. I think a cue ball will make a comfortable handle.

I thought it would be nice to make a walking cane or some type of staff from a vine. Which has a nature curvature to it. Well, turns out i made a big mistake picking a vine that has hairs growing on it, turns out that it is some form of poison ivy. After i got the vine to its wood status, after many hours came to pass i started feeling a bit itchy and started looking up poison vines, and sure enough it was Toxicodendron radicans. I hope my time wasn't all wasted on making a staff out of this vine. i'm thinking that the hairy roots are the poisonous portions and not the wood portion it self. So i'm hoping once its dyed and stained with linseed oil it be okay, That is if the wood it self isn't also poisonous. I think my next step in learning bushcraft is too learn all types of plants. It all started with making rope from monkey grass. lol

What is the difference between a walking stick and cane ?
@userLyndaDixon
@userLyndaDixon 6 жыл бұрын
To most people, the words “walking cane” and “walking stick” mean the same thing. In some ways they are right. But, the truth is that there are a subtle differences between the two. Most of these differences are based on their functionality. Canes are designed primarily for support and are generally built to take on more body weight. However, walking sticks are mainly used for maintaining a good balance while walking or hiking. Some people use these words to mean two different things. Some believe they mean the same thing. But, it is more important that you know there are different types of canes and sticks available on the market. You also need to know which is the right type for you, should you need one.
