Mountain Top QRP ~ Elecraft KX2 + AX1 Antenna ~ Wichita Mountains OK
Using the Elecraft KX2 to do QRP ham radio CW work on a mast. This 9:1 antenna on the KX2 is a winning combo. Watch me make QSO contact after QSO contact.
In amateur radio, QRP operation refers to transmitting at reduced power while attempting to maximize one's effective range. The term QRP derives from the standard Q code used in radio communications, where "QRP" and "QRP?" are used to request, "Reduce power", and ask "Should I reduce power?"
QRP KX2 “stealth” transceiver can go wherever your imagination takes you. Thanks to state-of-the-art construction techniques, it’s only 5.8 x 2.8 x 1.5” and weighs just 13 ounces-making it the smallest full-featured HF radio on the planet.
Yet it puts out up to 10 watts, covers 9 bands, and shares many features with the KX3. It also works with the KXPA100 amplifier.
To maximize your freedom to roam, you can outfit your KX2 with an internal 2.6 amp-hour Li-ion battery. Current drain is as little as 135 mA, yielding up to 8 hours of typical operation on a single battery charge. There’s also an internal automatic antenna tuner module (KXAT2), which can tune a random wire, dipole, or whip on multiple bands.
A rear tilt-foot angles the KX2 for use on any surface, from desktop to park bench to rock. The KX2 also makes a great moble rig, and can even be used hand-held. It includes a built-in mic for HT-style operation.
The KX2’s powerful 32-bit DSP offers features dual watch, stereo audio, user-programmable filter bandwidths, noise blanking, noise reduction, and auto-notch. RTTY and PSK data modes are built in-no PC needed-as well as a memory keyer and digital voice recorder for transmit.

Mt. Scott is fun, I understand the wife's concern on those type of drives, Mt Scott doesn't quite bother me like some areas in Colorado. Next time you need to hike Elk Mountain and POTA from there it's about 45mins to 1.5 hr hike to the top depending on your fitness level.

Great site Tom, neat antenna setup, worked well. as for phone, I don't know how many calls you made each tme? just one or two calls on fone is not enough. you need to give someone ample time to tune you in if they are spinning their dials. thats one of my pet peaves. I spin the dial looking for callers and when I come up (or dn) on a signal most times I need to tune them in and it takes two to three sometimes four calls to get them tuned in. so if you only call once or twice its not enough time. they also might be swinging and antenna around also. My rule of thumb is a Long call (CQ,CQ.CQ de call, call, call. then one more time and then wait. is good time frame. sometmes voice is harder to tune in than cw. also I noticed the one guy you worked you went back to him about 3-4 words faster than he was sending, while a lot of guys can copy faster than they send some don't hench the old rule send at the speed of the sender. Sorry toss out so much advice. but my two cents worth for what it's worth. just trying to help. thanks again for a great video and for sharing. de Ellis WA1RKS
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Ellis. I did call a lot more than what you see here, but it makes for boring video so I cut it out. Just seems like no one ever comes back on QRP SSB. CW gets much more response.

I was listening to your video while watching MNF and perked up when I heard my callsign! Yes I was QRP, and I'm sorry I kept getting it as N9QO...however, I reviewed my log, and I have you as N9YO on 10/4/21 @ 16:21 20 meters CW. Or was this activation a different day? FB on QRP on both ends. I was sending you 229 and I guess at the very end I finally figured it out you were N9YO. 72 de KN3A.

I have been all over this great state but I have never been there. I would love to drive down there on a Thursday afternoon and set up 2m SSB portable. just to see if I can work Jimmy in Claremore, OK. He runs the Sidewinders Net. That would be a 200+ mile contact.
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 2 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting idea. I think though it wouldn't work because if it's line of sight the curvature of the earth would block it. I would like to try an 80 mile repeater hit from there though.
@MrCowboybud
@MrCowboybud 2 жыл бұрын
@@hamradiocq I am thinking because of the elevation of both parties it might offset the curvature of the earth.

Tom.. so you are of the school that QRP can be 10w SSB? (not 5W regardless of mode) (also - people asking questions is good the hobby I think).. good to see you out CW again
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my theory on random people asking questions is...that they aren't really interested in radio, they are being nosy. If it was kids or something I'd help them learn, but I don't think most adults really care they just are bored with themselves and want to know why I'm doing something interesting. So, the 10watts is because I'm trying to make a contact for the video for entertainment and education purposes. The video wouldn't be interesting if I was making no contacts on 1 watt and it takes a lot of effort to get to these places and setup. I want best chances for a contact.

Really enjoyed this one. Do you think that having your counterpoise over big rocks instead of good ground to interact with might have caused the antenna performance to fall off some? I have a friend who does POTA and makes contacts from every park he goes to on SSB phone with 15 watts but he uses a home made 20 meter trapped dipole he pops up in just a few minutes. I usually use a wire but I also have a Buddy Stick that works ok but not as good as a wire does . Thanks again for sharing. KE0RPU
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 2 жыл бұрын
Hey dheller. You are probably right about that counterpoise being over a rock, not ideal at all. My biggest chore I hate is antenna setup. I don't like to spend a lot of time fussing with them while I'm out and people are gawking at me, so this is kinda easy to setup and makes for a good experiment. I need to keep working on an easy 20m dipole like you mentioned.
