Since you have such limited space a good application of glyphosate and 2-4d a month before planting woulda been extremely helpful for you to kill off the ferns and other weeds and keep them from competing with you new seeds. Ferns also thrive in low ph and low fertility soils so some lime and a bag or so of 13-13-13 would do wonders also. Maximizing tonnage in tiny plots takes the right combo of soil amendments, sunlight and rain. If you can make it a little bigger each year it’ll only get better! I started with something similar in size and worked by hand and dropped a couple trees each spring. Good luck!

Hey Chase, thanks for checking out my channel and for the very informative post! I've been thinking about possibly eliminating the ferns in this and other areas on my property. I appreciate you sharing your first-hand knowledge. I'll definitely be posting more food plot videos as I try new products and processes and expand my spaces. Thanks again and best of luck this season!

Love that tool. Used to have 1 & got alot of use out of it until I lost it which is easy to do. Good practice for a golfer. Next year go in there & clear that whole area & just rough up the ground. Plant 25 pounds of Buckwheat in mid-May by just pulling a piece of rolled up 6' chainlink over the seed. Put a strap attached to the corners of the chainlink. Then connect a 5' to 6' strap from the middle of that one to a 1 foot handle. I used a nice hollow shovel handle that u can grip easily. B4 u roll up that chainlink place about 4 chunks of weight in there that won't fallout of the chainlink. A 6'×6' piece of chainlink is all that is needed. That buckwheat will attract deer while it's moisture content is good until it gets more mature with flowers on top. Then around the beginning of September broadcast some Domain Big Sexy or a different Domain blend that has small seeds. Just walk around the standing Buckwheat while spinning the spreader. Then all that is left is to take that little swing tool & knock that Buckwheat to the ground on top of your seed. When that Buckwheat starts breaking down which it is already doing @ the end of August it will nourish & trap moisture to help your new high tonnage plot. The next year will just get easier & u won't have to carry any glyphosate back there. I've only used 3 gallons in 25 years. That buckwheat attracts butterflies & bees which we all need more of in a natural setting. Hope your season goes well.

Hey Joseph tread lightly! Thanks so much for checking out my channel and for the information. I'm a big fan of Domain Outdoor and planted two mini throw and grow plots with Hot Chic and No BS. I actually already have bucks eating the No BS just 12 days after planting! I'll keep your methods in mind or next year. Thanks again and best of luck this season!

Great looking spot! And getting a 4 pound bag started growing right NOW is perfect timing. You want to start pulling in deer early so that they will be used to coming to this spot by opening day. Looks like your planting 12 days ago has survived enough to get off and growing before too many deer showed up to wipe it out. That's exactly what needed to happen. May I offer s an observation? All that space with ferns growing isn't producing any food for the deer. You absolutely NEED to make a return trip with a weed eater, a rake, and enough seed to plant the entire open area wall to wall with a thick food plot mix. In just a couple hours with a weed eater and a rake, you could clear all the rest of the ferns out and make way to expand the food plot. I'd suggest seeding the rest of the plot in something likely to grow longer this winter than the clover in the Throw and Grow mix. Frosty Berseem Clover can survive fairly low temps. Winter wheat and Elbon Rye works well too. It's early enough to plant brassicas that will take the cold and keep producing some food. Turnips, forage radishes, rape, and others all work well. Deer will wipe out a small plot quickly so even if that entire space is planted to the tree line you will likely see deer eat it down to the bare dirt before the hunting season is over. Hopefully by that time you will have a couple deer in the freezer! Good luck this season. Stay safe and have fun. PS> Early next spring, get back in there and frost seed the entire plot THICKLY with Patriot or Durana clover, mixed with some crimson closer. Feb is usually a good time to do that seeding.. The clover will burst out thick and grow strong in early spring which should out compete the ferns. Plus it keeps deer coming back to that spot all year long.

Thanks, Trehan Creek Outdoors! Yep, I tried to put a food plot in during the spring, but all those ferns had other plans. Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about adding to the plot soon. Good thinking! Best of luck this season👍🏻

I know each area varies, but which do you like more? The No-Plow or the Secret Spot? I watched both of the videos and they did well, just wanted your opinion on which you felt brought in more deer. I live in NW Georgia and would be planting in some thick hardwoods behind a grown-up 2 acre field. Thank you!

Hey Dustin, thanks for checking out my channel! Out of the two of these products, I would definitely go with Secret Spot for two primary reasons. 1. Secret Spot has less Rye Grass (9% vs. No Plow's 25%). 2. Secret Spot contains a nice mix of clovers which will come back next year (less work for you and the deer will find the plot sooner next year and learn that there is a consistent food source there). If you haven't checked out my Ultimate Throw and Grow Video series yet, please look into it if you have some time (Part 3 shows what deer prefer to eat). I'm a big fan of Domain Outdoor (their products did really well in that video series) and planted their No BS mix and Hot Chic mix myself this season (also have videos on those). Best of luck and let me know how you make out!

@@mountainbuck Yes sir, I often turn to your channel before purchasing deer hunting accessories. I appreciate the time, effort, and honest opinion/results you give us on products. I appreciate the reply as well, I will for sure look into your other videos. I haven't seriously hunted in about 12 years or so, and this is my first season back into it. For now, I'm trying to just get stuff out that will help a little this year, and then be prepared for next season. Once again, thank you!

@@mountainbuck I have a question. I have a hunting area on private land with pretty good amount of tree canopy during the spring and early fall months with some sunlight coming in at times especially when the sun is in the south moving to the west at its highest point during the day. Do you believe the secret spot will still do well? I can get most of the vegetation cleared with a rake before spreading the seed. What's your thoughts?
@mountainbuck

@@SouthernGuy82 hey unseenhunter! I’m not sure Secret Spot will be as shade tolerant as some other blends. I’m a really big fan of Domain Outdoor and their No BS throw and grow mix: amzn.to/3VDlToL I planted this in a shady area with filtered sunlight that I never planted before this season and it did really well. I have a video on it where a decent 8 point buck is eating it just 12 days after planting kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNSqdbmLmdPaYoGU.htmlnd I also did a follow up video showing bucks coming back to it time and time again. I only wish I planted a bigger area cause the deer crushed that stuff.

Not just the ryegrass but over 50% is inert useless matter (not seed coating...that is listed separate). This mix has one goal: profit margin. Quality seed it is not.
@tymiller4743

LOL....over half that bag is useless...over 50% inert matter another 8.75% ryegrass (which of the seeds in there is the most by basically double).....essentially less than a pound and a half this mix is worthless junk to give to your neighbors not waste on a plot space.
