I have a small city food plot. The city deer eat everything around the neighborhood. I planted winter wheat and they never touched it! The plot was an understory and had to be cleared of a ton of leaves. Do these deer just not like winter wheat or is it not palatable due to a higher ph? They are of course eating all the clover I seeded along with the wheat now.

Getting ready to plant my first brassica plot. Ran into some confusion. Trying to follow your 45-60 day rule, so trying to get seed in next week. Problem is, there isnt any rain in the forecast the days after planting. In your opinion, is it best to wait longer so you can plant just before a rain, or more important to get the seed in and hope theres moisture in the soil? We did just have some good rain, but also some hot days too. Thanks!

That’s always a tough one because like you said “when will it rain” Brassica seed will just kinda sit there until it gets moisture. Seeds like beans can rot. If you are within that time frame closer to 60 days for brassicas then I would plant and do a rain dance. Keep in mind the longer the seed sits there without rain the longer there is for weeds to take over weeds will grow even with no rain. Also keep in mind the longer the seed sits there with no rain the more chance there is of birds and turkeys pecking the seeds. Hope that helps

Hi Dave, I just have a question on how you would handle this situation: I own a 30 acre woods and there is another 20 acre woods connected to mine. The person who owns the 20 acre woods baits and their is a couple other hunters that are just off my woods dumping corn piles in the field drawing the deer out of my woods to the field with the corn piles. I was planning on planting two 1/4 acre food plots in my woods but I hear baiting trumps food plots. Should I bait instead? (Would rather not) Am I just helping out the neighbors all the more by planting the plots or would the food plots help my hunting? What would you do in this situation? Thanks

Tough one. Baiting does kinda over power a food plot. They usually hit bait sites as a snack before moving on. Problem is most bait sites are hit at night especially in high pressure situations. Depending how the property is laid out and where they are hunting. How much pressure there is and where the deer are bedding food plots may help you but also could make it worse. In most cases you will have to be baiting as well unfortunately

I heard from a youtuber that winter wheat and winter rye should not be planted for fall food plots prior to labor day in the northern states like WI, MN, MI, NY and others because it grows too fast and may get stemmy and thus becomes no longer pallatable to the deer, your thoughts please? Also, is your winter wheat recommendation a hard or soft wheat for say these same states? Thanks and keep up the BS free videos!

Yes that’s right. Wheat and or rye should only be planted about 30-45 days before your average first frost I have a ton of videos on my channel about that. Brassicas should be planted about 50-60 days before your average Frost. I have planted many different varieties of wheat but never really paid attention to it. They are all attractive never really seen a difference it’s basically whatever I can get my hands on locally

The deer won’t hammer either much once it gets over 6-8 inches tall. Use a weed trimmer to give it a haircut back down lower. That causes the plants to put off more new tender tastier shoots which puts the deer back on it again.

Yes I have many times and it doesn’t work out to well. Brassicas rarely grow if they do they don’t amount to anything

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I might have to give away my leftover seed from last year then because brassica did poorly for me (decent leaf/no bulbs) and the clover and alfalfa is so strong that I have no intention on ever doing annual only again. ✌️
