A metabolic disorder is when something goes wrong with your metabolism, making it difficult for your cells to access the fuel you eat or the energy stored within your body. When disorders of the metabolism get a foothold, they can progress to conditions such as insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and type 2 diabetes. But this progression can be short-circuited. This video gives you the parameters to understand your current metabolic health and practical ways to improve it.

I'm 56, recovered drug/alcohol addict, and been on several strong prescription painkillers and antidepressants for decades Thanks to a few channels on here, Dr Berg, Dr Boz, Dr Berry, and yours in particular, I'm now off the Antidepressants, eating keto, intermittent fasting, and I'm 20lbs down in just 2 months, and feeling great as I continue to nurture my body THANK YOU doesn't come close

Keep up the great work. I have been eating fairly keto as well as fasting and have seen some improvement. But being a 45 year long alcoholic has and is my biggest challenge. I am waiting for legalized psilocin therapy which has been show to have benefit in studies. Unfortunately the only place you can get medically supervised therapy is in Canada. Oregon is currently in the process of the beginnings of clinics but in the US it is not allowed to be called therapeutic. Keep up your journey and stay well.

I'm 58 and was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 4 months ago with an hbA1C of 6.7 - After 4 months of a keto diet I'm down to 5.7 (no medication). I was only eating low carb about 80% of the time but when I was it was VERY low (around 10g carb a day). I'm pretty pleased with myself.

U.K. based 59 year old who drives trucks.. ex military and was physically fit up until 6 years or so ago. A change of country (I used to live/work in Spain) and job.. now a trucker working away 5 days… things have changed for me. Started ‘sugar free’ about 3 weeks ago. No sweets, no crisps, and minimum processed foods(shocked as to how many supermarket foods have ‘sugar’ added) and no alcohol… still picking my way through what one can eat but I feel different than I used to. Mental clarity is ‘up’ (had a couple of ‘brain fog’ events though) and appetite down.. No desire to eat or drink rubbish… NONE! I do need to start exercising again.. but when working that can be difficult (most of the times parked up in dangerous locations next to highways etc) trying to do something that is ‘meaningful’ (an ex soldiers mentality I guess) walking and some resistance bands have to do(even being able to walk can be impossible at times!) I suffer from a couple of chronic complaints and my consultant suggested I should change jobs… that’s possibly going to happen.. as I sit most of the day which does me no good at all. Have been watching and following a few KZfaqrs regards healthy eating etc and have managed to change a small part of my life with little effort(other than trying to read the contents labels on packaging) and learning as I go… thanks for sharing your knowledge it has initiated a fundamental change in my eating habits.. all for the better.

Carbs are incredibly addicting. I've seen where carbs stimulate the pleasure centers in the brain. I'm on a low carb diet with intermittent fasting of about 17-7. I feel much better with much more energy. I do still crave carbs even though 6 months on.. Thanks Dr Becky ❤

Dr. Robert Lustig and Dr. Richard Johnson have a great talk on youtube about Fructose. Personally, I found no carbs ( or at least only the trace carbs in meat ), was the best for me. Any eating of carbs tended to set me back towards more carbs, much like just trying to mentally not eat cake, ice cream and cookies. Nature limits carb availability, modern society does not. Have to be very careful with carbs! I now don't crave or want any, but it took well over a year, probably closer to 2, to get to that point. I have also found drinking only water gets to a point where I only crave water. It has never yet worked out well for me to add any other drinks in as they all make me want to keep drinking more of something other than water. We all have to find what works for ourselves, but meat, salt and water so far ( at 3 years ) has been by far the best for me. Good luck with whatever path is taken, it is the starting and making the effort that get one on a better path. Never fear falling off either, get right back on and keep at it, you will get there!

May I gently correct how you said the name of the University/Hospital System you referenced, as I use to incorrectly say it, as well, until it was pointed out to me. It is Johns (with an “s”) Hopkins Medicine, not John Hopkins. Although it was his first name, it is Johns, not John. It was passed down from his grandmother, whose middle name was Johns, to his dad, then to him. I love your informative, scientific channel.

I enjoy having water with LMNT in it. This is the best tasting electrolytes I have found. do you have a video on tips for knowing what's an ideal amount of electrolytes to drink in a day? I've been on Keto & IF since late Feb. and have had a lot of success with weight loss but don't necessarily feel well on Keto. Wondering if I need more electrolytes.
@beckygillaspy
@beckygillaspy 10 ай бұрын
Hi Karen, many factors lead to the loss of electrolytes (i.e., keto, fasting, sweating, exercise) so the more of these activities you do the more you'll want to replace. You can have your electrolyte levels checked through a blood test. Until then, you can gauge how you feel starting with a 1/4 to 1/2 stick a day and adjusting as needed.

I don’t need to lose weight; rather, I need to gain weight. I am 5’4” and very much underweight at 90 pounds. I was trying the keto diet for several months because I’ve heard how healthy it is, but I was having trouble eating enough calories and protein every day. Since last week, I started adding some carbs, but not a lot. Do you have any recommendations?

@LebogangLivingstone You could look at Mayo Clinic hospital diet--both book and online. It is both low fat and low sugar, but does have complex carbs. It works. It encourages the eating of fruit and veg and has protein and a variety of recipes. I know it works...just a thought for an alternative from a tested and true hospital with really qualified doctors.

It's possible you don't need full keto anymore. Do you weight train? Do you minimize stress and prioritize a solid 7-9hrs of sleep? You can look into getting a dexascan to show your body fat%/visceral fat, Google it.
