I am nowhere near Master level, just a filthy 1800FIDE, however I do prefer to play with black if I have no information on what my oponent plays. As my Black repertoire is better consolidated.

The equation for updating ELO has a "k factor" to control how quickly someone's ELO changes. For new players, it's higher, so they can adjust closer to their actual ELO faster as there's little sense in having someone rampage through ranks too low for them for too long (or little sense in having someone struggle if the starting ELO is too high). ELO changes by k*([actual points] - [expected points]). Due to the large difference in ELO, the expected points for 1 game would be 1, a guaranteed win. That's why if he wins, he would gain 0 ELO as 1 - 1 is 0. If [actual points] was -1, meaning he lost, his rating would be adjusted by 10*(-1 - 1) = -20. The other player most likely has the regular k factor used after enough games, which is 20. That's twice as much as Ben's k factor, so he'd see a change of +40. If he were in the initial, more volatile period, a k factor of 40 is used, which is twice as much again, meaning he'd see a change of +80. A draw counts as 0.5. Since 1 - 0.5 is 0.5, all the numbers would be halved in the case of a draw.
