CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Natives battle the Irish gangs at the Five Points as young Amsterdam (Cian McCormack) watches the bloodshed.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The violent rise of gangland power in New York City at a time of massive political corruption and the city's evolution into a cultural melting pot set the stage for this lavish historical epic, which director Martin Scorsese finally brought to the screen almost 30 years after he first began to plan the project. In 1846, as waves of Irish immigrants poured into the New York neighborhood of Five Points, a number of citizens of British and Dutch heritage who were born in the United States began making an open display of their resentment toward the new arrivals. William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), better known as "Bill the Butcher" for his deadly skill with a knife, bands his fellow "Native Americans" into a gang to take on the Irish immigrants; the immigrants in turn form a gang of their own, "The Dead Rabbits," organized by Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson). After an especially bloody clash between the Natives and the Rabbits leaves Vallon dead, his son goes missing; the boy ends up in a brutal reform school before returning to the Five Points in 1862 as Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio). Now a strapping adult who has learned how to fight, Amsterdam has come to seek vengeance against Bill the Butcher, whose underworld control of the Five Points through violence and intimidation dovetails with the open corruption of New York politician "Boss" Tweed (Jim Broadbent). Amsterdam gradually penetrates Bill the Butcher's inner circle, and he soon becomes his trusted assistant. Amsterdam also finds himself falling for Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz), a beautiful but street-smart thief who was once involved with Bill. Amsterdam is learning a great deal from Bill, but before he can turn the tables on the man who killed his father, Amsterdam's true identity is exposed, even though he has concealed it from nearly everyone, including Jenny. Gangs Of New York was the first film in two years from actor Leonardo DiCaprio; ironically, it was at one time scheduled to open on the same day as Catch Me If You Can, the Steven Spielberg project that DiCaprio began filming immediately after Gangs wrapped.

Priest's murder was originally much more violent. During the opening battle, just before Bill stabs Priest Vallon, an axe severs his left arm at the elbow, then Bill hacks him limb from limb. The shot of the arm being severed is still in the film moments before Bill yells for Priest to turn around. When the film was first conceived in 1978, Martin Scorsese planned to cast Dan Aykroyd as Amsterdam Vallon and John Belushi as Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting. The project fell apart after Belushi died. A cast reshuffle had Mel Gibson as Amsterdam Vallon and Willem Dafoe as The Butcher.

You can't forget about Bryan Cranston! For big screen film roles, I totally agree with you and DDL is the best we will probably see in our lifetimes. But with television, Bryan Cranston just swept the floor with his role as Walter White. They are both brilliant in their own senses and I'm not even going to try to compare them because its honestly apples and oranges...

Andrew Soto I assume that as one side starts to win the other side's forces will take notice and start to give up or run away, and then it just snowballs from there. The losing side either will keep fighting until they inevitably are killed by the greater numbers or they run away / surrender. I doubt Bill let many men surrender though before the fighting was over.

@tankmaster1018
@tankmaster1018 3 жыл бұрын
@stephen john gray Absolutely fair enough man. Personally, I didn't think that Scorsese was intending this opening fight scene to be a horrifying or brutal thing. I think it was intended to be highly stylized and fluid, introducing the Butcher's demeanor and fighting style while also establishing the basic plot points of the numerous gangs. That is my guess since I'm sure you're familiar with Scorsese's other films, and know damn well that he doesn't shy away from graphic violence. I think this fight scene was to establish the plot and characters in a sort of "tall tale" manner, kind of like how the fight would be retold by anybody who witnessed it happen, hence the low frame rate and fast cutting. Just a theory though man, your point is just as valid as mine. I just think it's not really that type of movie where really grounded and realistic violence is needed. The closest scene in GONY to a real life fight was that boxing match between Leo and that Irish dude. That was a hell of a realistic and gritty fight in comparison! Even the most graphic scene of the movie however where the soldiers fire on civilians during the draft riots is intercut with upbeat music, giving the whole thing a very surreal/dreamlike feeling. I've gotta watch this movie again. It's been years since I've seen it, and I defiantly need to give it another chance. Nice talking to you man! Night

Rewatching just this sequence I have to say: This is masterfully directed; especially in regard to the very elaborate shift from "standard hollywood epic brawl-battle" - with a little blood here and there, people being punched through windows and so on - to flippin brutal all-out carnage, which is actually kinda sickening to watch. Notice how the shift occurrs around the time that creepy wench, Hell-Cat Maggie, bites off the guy's ear? - Pay attention to the changing amounts of visible blood

Yeah I feel that with this scene Scorsese shouldn't have done so much "modern" stuff in terms of cinematography, editing and music (three things that Scorsese almost always does brilliantly) to prevent from being a bit too cheesy. I personally believe the Dutch angles, wide angle lenses etc. were kind of unfitting for the style; the editing was maybe not "gritty" enough and the slow-mo, as you said, was a bit cheesy; the music I actually really dislike - I would have much preferred if Howard Shore had composed something orchestral or at least less electronic to fit the setting of the film.

I just realized that Priest got hit with an axe or scythe right before Butcher tricked him with another fighter. He was already weakened by that blow.

There's a point in the fight @ 2:00, probably meant to be edited out, in which someone hits one of Priest's arms with an AXE! Right after is when Bill yells his name and Priest's arm is intact.

Man, I would've traded this entire fight scene just to see Monk land that 240 degree swing.

I dunno why but fight scenes like this, as epic as they may be, make we wanna see remix versions of them! For example, I'd love to see this scene with the 3 storms from Big Trouble in Little China involved, or a live action version of Vega from Street Fighter in it! I wish someone could and would make it happen, that would be so awesome!

You are not being used. This is how commercial works. Now you may get interested in watching the movie itself

valkyria20chronicles i, like most other people here have probally seen this movie. So this clip does not serve to entertain me, but waste my time. to fully understand you should look at the channels commercial motives. will movieclips make money from you if you do get interested in watching the movie and then go and watch the whole thing? - no will they make money if you click on the next leading link, so they can expose you to yet another advertisement?

nyrbsamoht And is that a bad thing? Maybe you end up finding something you like and want to see. Dont complain. People making advertisements need to make a living as well. On a side note, i own this movie and this video still serve to entertain me.

Relatively bloodless 'gory' battle compared to more recent films. The reality is these battles with knives, axes and sharps and metals are really brutal.

In an interview with Scorsese and his editor, they said 1920s Soviet montage (Eisenstein and Pudovkin) influenced the editing of this scene. The influences are apparent.

Interesting to hear Martin Scorsese's say how toned down and choreographed the fight scenes were, and added that if he made the film twenty years before this, then the violence would have been more brutal and graphic.

Scorsese used the one take of bill fighting the dead rabbits twice in the same scene. At the beginning when the camera is focused on bill, and again with a bird's eye view. It works well.

The name of this song is Signal to Noise by Peter Gabriel instrumental version. So much better than with the lyrics. Also, if you like this song try Dark Moon, High Tide by Afro Celt Sound System from Gangs of New York soundtrack.
