I love how Daniel Day Luis looks right at Leo like "are you going to let him say that about you to your face with out doing anything". So much communicated with so little.

Hell no, he's pretty damned bad. Everyone in New York is terrified and those who aren't his own Gang Members despise him. The Chinese, the Irish, and any other immigrant who comes his way is terrified and disgusted by him. He's a xenophobic nightmarish version of the "True" American. Only a sociopathic bigot and brute with a perspective as skewed as their mind would call him a hero.

The guy despises every immigrant in NY and kills them when they interfere with his political interests. 100% bad guy. (I love the character, but he is by no perspective whatsoever, a hero) The fact that he treats well Amsterdam does not make him a "hero". Hahaha. He might've in fact always known Amsterdam was Priest's son, and treated the boy well for selfish reasons, to avoid being killed by him. You're mixing up Daniel Day-Lewis' charisma and charm with heroic qualities, similarly to those who love and follow cult leaders - ignoring their evil actions.

And why wouldn't they? Most of the holds used in modern wrestling go back thousands of years, grappling is pretty much as old as combat itself. The notion that the twentieth century somehow invented fighting systems and everyone was just stumbling blindly around before that is totally ahistorical.
@914southside
@914southside 3 жыл бұрын
@cyrano Johnson that may be true but rear naked chokes with that technique was not around back in those days because the mechanics of blood and air chokes weren’t a thing yet only later did they actually put techniques into play and really learned how to indefinitely choke someone out
@bloodypine22
@bloodypine22 2 жыл бұрын
@@914southside The earliest sources for rear naked chokes go back to the 6th century BC, and there is a pretty good description of it being used in a fight between two 3rd century roman philosophers. wound his forearm about the other’s throat to shut off the breathing, while pressing his legs on the groins and winding his feet one inside each knee of his adversary
@914southside
@914southside 2 жыл бұрын
@bloodypine I never said choking wasn’t discovered a long time ago I said rear naked chokes with that kind of technique in that time wasn’t around yet the rear naked choke was first taught right arm around neck left hand on head but then it was discovered u could use the left arm as a lever and pull it down to undo the choke so now people are taught right arm around neck grab left bicep left arm behind the head grabbing right shoulder and that’s what happened in this scene which is completely inaccurate that correct form of a rear naked choke was definitely not around in that time period
