CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) kidnaps Dr. Warren (Jacki Weaver) and takes her to a remote field, where he forces her to give him the therapy he needs.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An amiable shipping clerk's optimistic exterior masks a dark secret that leads to tragic repercussions when he stops taking his anti-psychotic meds in this satirical horror comedy from Marjane Satrapu. Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) lives in the picturesque American town of Milton, where he earns his living in a factory that produces bathtubs and toilets. Jerry pines for his pretty co-worker, Fiona (Gemma Arterton), who works in accounting and barely acknowledges his existence. Optimistic that he can win her affections after he's recruited to help organize an office work party, Jerry stops taking the medications prescribed to him by his psychiatrist (Jacki Weaver), and that's when the voices start. Though his loyal dog offers Jerry comforting words of reassurance, his cynical cat continually reminds him that he is deeply deranged and completely unworthy of love. Later, when Jerry finally manages to get Fiona alone, the sudden and unexpectedly grim turn of events sends Jerry plummeting down a particularly dark path. Anna Kendrick co-stars

@@calelsanluis7700 It's critical thinking. Your mind running through different scenarios to make judgment calls on what to do next. Most of us hear this voice as our own, knowing that. Others disassociate this voice from ourselves ashamed of what we are thinking so we imagine it as something else so we can push blame away from us and as with all things , with practice , we only get better at it ; making it possible to hallucinate those voices coming from an outside source. Shutting down that inside voice would cause us to act on any thought instinctually without giving it perspective. If I was an angry person but I wasnt lacking in empathy and someone bumped into me my instinct would be to take that as disrespect and assault that I would then use as an excuse to rage on them. But my minds voice might ask me why they where so distracted that they didnt see me. Or vice verse. Its when our inner voice becomes damaged by our experiences that we find ourselves in conflict with our own thoughts. But shutting those thoughts down would not fix the problem. Just my opinion. Definitely makes ya think huh?

This scene is one of the most important keys to the movie. Throughout the movie, the therapist would just meet with Jerry, literally put a checkmark on a row of boxes and send him back on his way with only her concern being if he took his meds or not for ten years. Whether or not you agree with her, the fact is that if she would've provided more assistance, Jerry could've been a completely different person who could have learned to handle his condition better.

If you have any real experience with this particular range of psychotic disorders you would know that's not true the most primary thing the patient can do is take their medication if he was not trying to open up to her significantly prior to that point and he wasn't taking his medication she wasn't really able to do anything with him. He was afraid of telling her the exact violent nature of these thoughts he was having if he had she would have been able to deal with him in some manner. You are only grasping the black comedy and ironic angles.

@@calelsanluis7700 I think she’s trying to explain the difference between a healthy “inner voice” and the Voices of schizophrenics like Jerry. The former are related to helpful instincts that warn us of danger and inspire us creatively. We feel them rather than hear them. But Jerry’s Voices are hostile auditory hallucinations, pushing him toward self-destructive acts. The doctor is saying Jerry can have a healthy inner voice without the Voices-if he takes his meds.

I wonder how Jerry’s life would have been if he had something of an at home caregiver. Maybe could have kept him on track with his medication, could have helped with his feeling of loneliness and social interaction, and to have a real friend. He was somewhat capable of forming relationships but he has such a fragile mental state, he relies on the only “friends” he has, that being the voices of his own subconscious. It can’t be easy on his therapist either, I’m sure she does care for Jerry’s wellbeing, but he definitely needed more intensive treatment. He murdered people sure, but I can’t help but feel sorry for him.

@@ItsB3enLikeThis I didn't blame anybody. I was pointing out the story line doesn't make sense. He is supposed to be incoherent when he is off his medication because he's psychotic, right? That's the whole defense of why the shrink couldn't "reach" him. But then the ground-breaking conversation happens...while he is still off his medication. Edit for clarity: So that means either the medications were not necessary for him to understand her despite being in a psychotic state or there is a bit of a plot hole.

I mean yeah, you do have a point. I as well don't think this would this could cure anyones depression. But he often felt alone and personally , alone doesn't have to mean that you don't have any friends. I myself have had issues with myself and because of that i felt alone because it felt like everyone around me could not relate and I felt like there was something wrong with me. I felt like I was the only one doing bad and feeling really sad about certain things in life. But of course I've talked with a psychologist and people around me which made me feel like i was not alone. I think in jerry's situation it's the same. of course , it does not cure his mental issue, but it does help you out a little , doesn't it? I'm sorry if my English is bad.

It's weird that they make a movie where a guy beats and kidnaps and kills women but he's Ryan Reynolds so he's still supposed to get out empathy. This is why women stay with guys who beat them. Movies like this tell us every guy is secretly just misunderstood when he abuses us and it's not really his fault.
@Klaeyy
@Klaeyy 6 жыл бұрын
The true reason for women staying and also literally any kind of abuse victims (men too, also even literally animals) of any kind staying with their abusers is "learnend helplessness". They find themselves in a situation where they really can't leave in the beginning (in the case of female victims it is that they are actually still in love in the beginning therefore can't bring themselves to do it, see the situation with a "maybe it's getting better/maybe it's a bad phase atm" ). Victims then begin to "imprint" the fact into their brain that they can't leave and will have to accept the fact to suffer through some abuse here and there. Which then sadly has the effect that victims stilll stay *even* when the reason they couln't leave first vanishes. Because if those victims get abused their brain basically goes "okay, you will have to suffer through it any way, so lets just get this over with quickly". This is keeping them from leaving because they really don't even consider leaving as an option even though the possibility NOW is literally in front of them. They have to unlearn this trait first, unlearn that they are trapped there^^ They did some tests with dogs (pretty cruel sadly, but also pretty informative) and very similar things happend. They put 2 Dogs in 2 seperate containers, one dog has an exit and can leave if he wants to while the other dog can't. Both have shock collars around their necks with which they got shocked at some random times, which would cause them to panic and run away in fear (of this threat that they couldn't see). The Dog that had an exit to run away ALWAYS did and kept doing that for ever. The other one actually started running around to look for an exit the first times, but after a few times of not finding one he realised that he can't leave and started lying down to just take the pain "in comfort" when it happens. They THEN added an exit for this dog as well to see if he would use it now after he got used to the shocks. He did not, he still laid down and just endured the pain. He learned that there is no escape and now that an option, which is completely obviously in front of him, he still did not make use of it and took the abuse. This more or less happens to all living things with enough intelligence to learn stuff and sadly also what causes it in humans.
@megg2826
@megg2826 6 жыл бұрын
The movie is also bringing to light mental illness and what the person could be going through. People dont know what is going on in a persons brain when they have a mental illness. This just shows an example of how it might be. Yes abuse is horrible, but women are the most common abusers not men statistically. Hollywood protrays that only men are abusers because of a sterotype.
