CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Louis (Brad Pitt) can't bring himself to finish the murder of a young woman that Lestat (Tom Cruise) began.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Anne Rice's best-selling romantic horror tale about the origins of a centuries-old vampire inspired this popular, atmospheric chiller. One of director Neil Jordan's major Hollywood productions, the film stays close to its source material, retaining the frame of a young reporter (Christian Slater) interviewing a man who claims to be a 200-year-old vampire. The man, Louis (Brad Pitt), shares his story, beginning in 18th-century New Orleans with his first encounters with the charismatic and decadent vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise). Lestat converts Louis to blood-sucking and immortality, but Louis fails to adopt Lestat's cavalier attitude, instead tormenting himself with guilt over his new nature. The two vampires remain deeply, if reluctantly, connected over the years, while becoming intimately involved with others of their kind, including Claudia (Kirsten Dunst), a mature immortal in a young child's body. Fans of the novel raised numerous objections, particularly after Rice initially spoke out against the casting of Cruise as Lestat; further casting difficulties followed the death of River Phoenix, whose role as the interviewer was assumed by Christian Slater. Rice later recanted her objections, and the combination of thrills and gothic romance proved popular with audiences.

That's because he's a truly great actor, which no one gives him credit for because of his personal controversial issues and his many roles where he just sort of plays himself. When you see some of the performances where he actually plays someone other than himself - this role, the crippled Vietnam vet in Born on the Fourth of July, the rock star in Rock of Ages, the self help guru in Magnolia, for instance - he's always fantastic, dead on.

According to “The Vampire Lestat” novel, from the point of view of Lestat (Tom Cruise), he read the minds of these women who would get men drunk so they could rob them and kill them. As far as he’s concerned, he was ridding the world of evil doers who also taste better than innocents. Louis (Brad Pitt), who could not read minds, was unaware of this. Lestat could have been lying, so it’s up to the reader to decide who was telling the truth.

Yep, Lestat is a liar. Louis calls him out on this. Lestat always talked about how heartbroken he was by things and how they made him weep like a child, but Louis confronted him on writing this, "I lived with you for over a century and I never saw you shed one single tear. Not one."

This scene is my favorite in the movie. Louis' struggle with not being human anymore and Lestat trying to make him understand. Lestat wasn't doing it to be cruel, he was trying to let Louis know that he has to feed _on humans_ to survive. Get over it, embrace what you are now, you're not human anymore.

I'm glad a few other people mentioned this in the comments, I wondered if I was the only one that noticed how incredibly gifted this young actress was in this very brief, but astonishingly powerful role. Everyone wants the role of the villain, but it takes a lot of talent to pull off the role of a hapless, nameless victim in a two minute scene. The way she instantly breaks down with the flailing of her hands without moving the rest of her body, the sheer shock and panic in her face and the quaking in her voice, that is exactly how people would react in such a scenario. Most people would probably overdo it. Most actors would likely go overboard and incorporate more of a vocalised response, but she exuded most of her fear through her body language and facial expressions. That is very difficult to pull off and remain convincing. But this girl nails it smack on the head. I wonder what other films she went on to do.

I'm very, very hardcore when it comes to horror. Yet the actress playing the hooker in this scene does such a phenomenal job that I just can't watch it. I know it's a movie and all, but... can't watch it. Lestat, you... monster... you... demon!

That all depends if you consider Lestat himself to be a reliable narrator (or Louis even for that matter).
@katerinaaqu
@katerinaaqu 4 жыл бұрын
@@necro_nancy Indeed but many of the characters Lestat mentioned in his side of the story also make appearance later so he doesn't lie of them at least. Now another thing is that he didn't seek to victimize himself by making Louis the villain but by telling his past that had nothing to do with Louis. Also Louis in Body Thief challenged Lestat to weep since he "always weeped in his side of the story but never had he seen him actually weeping" and Lestat reacts by saying that that makes Louis the perfect liar for thoroughly showing him weeping in the scene that "they both knew it never happened". So yeah maybe certain emotions Lestat described were to victimize himself but I think that Lestat's side of the story tends to be closer to reality and that Louis mainly wrote the side of the story as he saw it happening that he kinda misunderstood Lestat and he described what he thought he saw or how he felt of him at that time, plus he also tried to "create a villain" out of his story so he would make the vampires look repulsive to stop people from wishing the Dark Gift.

I will NEVER forget this movie being the catalyst for my Tom Cruise love affair. I was 11 in '96 and couldnt sleep because I was graduating from 5th Grade to Junior High and was too excited to sleep. So I thought I would watch tv to get my nerves off it. I started watching this from the beginning and by the time Tom Cruise jumped over that coffin,I was in love 😍 Never had a thing for Brad but Tom has always had my heart.
