CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Karl (Billy Bob Thornton) brings a lawnmower blade into the house with the intention of killing Doyle (Dwight Yoakam).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sling Blade marked the directorial debut of country singer turned actor Billy Bob Thornton, who also authored the script (expanding George Hickenlooper's acclaimed short Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade) and stars in the picture. Thornton plays Karl Childers, a mildly retarded man who spent most of his life in a mental institution. When Karl was a boy, he was severely mistreated by his abusive father (Robert Duvall). At age 12, Karl found his mother having intercourse with a man who tormented him endlessly; he snapped, flew into a homicidal rage, and killed both individuals by decapitating them. Years later, as a middle-aged man, Karl is deemed harmless to society and released from the mental institution where he resides. Karl says he has learned his lesson and adds, "I reckon I got no reason to kill no one." He returns to the town of his boyhood, where he's befriended by Frank (Lucas Black), the son of a widowed mother who sees the eccentric but open-hearted Karl as a kindred spirit. Karl also gets a job at a fix-it shop and resides in the backroom, until Frank's mother, Linda (Natalie Canerday), takes a liking to Karl and lets him stay with them. However, Karl also meets Doyle (Dwight Yoakam), Linda's boyfriend, a sadistically cruel, narrow-minded drunk who tosses casual abuse at Frank, treats Linda like dirt, and mocks Karl endlessly. The late John Ritter co-stars as Linda's friend Vaughan, a mild-mannered homosexual who works at the neighborhood dollar store. Musicians Col. Bruce Hampton and Vic Chesnutt are among Doyle's party guests.

This was partly based off the life of Delbert McGewnerlaney. He had a sub par iq, but was a man of great strength and also empathy. He lifted a car off a grown man and once saved a woman from an attacker by squeezing the man’s genitals until he let the woman go. He lived to be 107. He was known to harrow fields in a day, single-handedly. And could always be seen with his trusty Kaiser blade, or as he called it, Sling Blade.

Carl was slow, but he wasn't stupid. The way I think he figured it was that he couldn't make it on is own without that little boy (who was his best friend) and the boy's mother (who was always kind to Carl and who was his best friend's mother). But, he knew Doyle would surely end up harming or killing both the little boy and his mother. So, he decided to protect them, knowing he would go back to the same place he was before. So, he loses a little, but he gains a lot. In peace of mind. Remember the dead baby brother he was forced to bury in his youth.

He was a bully, and constantly challenged Carl in this scene, with disbelief that Carl would do such a thing. Love this movie and it's portrayal of a simple man trying to connect and survive in the outside world. But as good as certain people can be everyone has their breaking point and Carl's was meeting Doyle. In his mind, there was only one solution to ending Linda and Frank's abuse: killing Doyle. He felt it would make them safer and to a degree it did. But in the process it would mean being reinstated back to the facility and he was fine with that.

This movie is full of great characters, all the guys in the band... John Ritters gay guy... but Doyle is the best. He made you hate him from the very beginning and that's good acting. Dwight Yoakum (sp?) should have won an Academy Award for his portrayal of one nasty sob.
@Getoffmearse
@Getoffmearse 8 жыл бұрын
It's funny because I've actually encountered people like the character that Dwight portrayed. Dwight Yokam's take on Doyle was a very realistic take on the abusive-alcoholic-boyfriend (I.E. everytime he fucks up, he tries apologizing afterwards so that people will give him a second chance). They tried making him as human as possible while still managing to make him hated throughout the entirety of the movie which worked perfectly.

Apparently, Yoakam did such a good job portraying Doyle that when his mother attended the premiere of Sling Blade, after the movie, she looked him in the eye and said "I'm glad he killed you!" On a side note, Doyle is one of the more realistic examples of an abusive boyfriend in a movie, IMO...

Observation: When the neighbor complained about the band's noise, Doyle yelled back the law was on his side, that he played cards with the chief of police. Thus, the impartiality (and in effect the corruption) of the police department, bore partial responsibility for the unjust situation with Doyle invading Linda and Frank's home and his continuing verbal and physical abuse of them, whether the chief knew what was going on or not.
