Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. My mom told me that when I was a kid her boss yelled at her and made her cry, and when she called my dad and told her in tears what happened, he got in his truck, drove to her work, went to her office, emptied her desk, and went to her bosses office and said “she quits”. Melvin Purvis is definitely the kind of lawman that I would give an arm and a leg to work with, and this scene right here shows why. He was a cop that wasn't afraid to pull the trigger, but he had his limits and codes. He was well educated and had a code of fairness and chivalry that I can easily get behind. What we need is more cops like him. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate what the police do nowadays, but this surpasses even the best of today

Jakira Kumahata I guess it's kind of a mystery, buy most sources say that he retired and took his own life because he was so damaged by what he had to do with trying to catch Dillinger. I guess it's up to interpretation

Not saying what Fatboy did was right, but at this point in time Dillinger’s gang had already murdered multiple FBI agents and policemen who all probably had wives of their own. Can’t say I wouldn’t have been pissed if someone was holding out information. Still doesn’t make what he did right but I can understand why he was probably so desperate to get Dillinger.

I think about this scene a lot especially when Bale Carries cotillard and then I think on the sheepdog speech from American sniper, men like fat boy are just the wolves who seek out to do harm against those who can’t defend themselves, the sheep, cotillards character, but then there are the sheepdogs, bale, who drive away the wolf and protect the sheep.

You know what's hurts in this scene when she said "when my johnny finds out how you slapped around his girl you know what happens to you, fatboy!" thinking that johnny never knowing that fatboy slapped his girl because in the end he died, i cried of that so much i expecting and want to see johnny reaction when he finds out that his girl tortured by this fatboy and take revenge, i really expecting that but what i expecting wouln't happen thats make me little deppressed, fatboy really scared of johnny you know the scene in the end when fatboy trying pull the trigger on johnny but he failed because he suddenly saw johnny eyes and when he saw it he's so scared. Sad Ending :(

This is such a phenomenal film, extremely underrated espically with it's cast, dialogue, soundtrack, and storyline. Johnny Depp, and Christan Bale absolutely nailed their roles, and a special mention to Crudup who plays Hoover, and Marion who plays Billie, such an amazing influence, and performance. The soundtrack of this scene is made so well, and with its dialogue, true masterpiece, and class.

Everyone was just that rough back then but my mother was an outlaw and I was born in Tulsa Oklahoma where lots of the old gangsters came from or lived and they were mean as hell, so cops were too, in fact not to many years before this the sheriffs like Wyatt Earp were gangsters themselves at one time or another. Everyone of you people should research the crime wave in the 30s and see how you would be, if you even lived, people nowadays are soft and spoiled.

Something about the way the film is shot makes it looks amatuerish. Not taking anything away from the director but a bit pf bluriness may have helped make it look more like a "movie" than an HD quality camcorder.

A dying man in shrieking agony, is tortured while Purvis keeps watch and threatens the doctor that wants to ease the man's passing. We see Purvis feels mildly uncomfortable about it. A woman gets slapped and hit with a phonebook. Purvis carries her out like a white knight, and the agent that beat her is treated like a monster. Both were tortured for information on Dillinger, but we're supposed to feel far more strongly about the much milder mistreatment. And don't give me guff about it being period appropriate to their attitudes, because the movie wants us to agree, and it was made in 2009. Society, and the disposable male, writ large.
