THE LAST FIVE YEARS by Tony award winning composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein is a young, talented up and coming novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through songs using an intercutting time line device; all of Cathy’s songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair while Jamie’s songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. Its beautiful pop music score portrays an honest, heartbreaking, often funny, exploration of love and it's consequences on individual identity.

I realize you commented this like a couple years ago haha but for future reference of anyone like me who likes to read every comment on every video I watch randomly in the middle of the night, I'll add my thoughts on the matter. By its grand theatrical definition, a comedy is simply a story that ends happily, usually with a marriage or declaration of love. Think like Shakespeare's comedies. All of his plays were riddled with jokes and witty humour, but deciding which genre the show actually is depends on how it ends: love, or death. Because of the dual timelines of this show, it is both a comedy (in Cathy's narrative direction) and a tragedy (in Jamie's) because at the end of /how/ the story is told, Cathy is actually newly enchanted and Jamie is most decidedly not. Ergo, this movie is actually both a comedy and a drama/tragedy: a dramedy.

Some folks may not have liked the idea of it being filmed because it was truly a masterpiece as a play. You see in the play the husband and the wife are the only actors on stage. I haven’t seen the movie but in the play she’s on one side of the stage going back in time from the moment she reads the divorce letter. He’s on the other side of the stage Five years earlier when he sees her for the first time. They do not interact with each other until they catch up the day they married. When the play ends we see her reaction when she saw him for the first time. And we see him writing the divorce letter she read at the beginning of the play. That’s a difficult thing to translate to screen, and also they’re going to be more actors.

I'm very late to this; but I think this version connects in a different way with the audience than the stage version. We get to see them happy together at various parts of this movie and the things that break down those moments as well. The fact they don't interact that much on stage removes that connection to the relationship itself in addition to the individual characters. Both are masterpieces and I think this adaptation is, as @alexandradiaz1319 said 7 years ago, a masterpiece.@@antmagor

Just saw the movie (like so many others). I feel like I want to start crying right now. Great movie though. You'd think that knowing the ending would spoil the movie but it doesn't at all. Instead of trying to figure out what happens, the entire time you are trying to figure out the how it happened, and they give you a great story.

The reason Anna sings in her movies is because she was high experienced in musical theatre before she started doing movies (much like Julie Andrews for example). She was also nominated for a Tony Award when she was just 12 making her one of the youngest people ever nominated, so there is no denying her talent.

The Last 5 Years is a semi-autobiographical account of Jason Robert Brown's relationship with his wife. So it's not your average rom-com. In the stage version the girl's story is told from the present and goes backwards...the guy tells his story from backward to the present and they only appear "together" or intersect onstage when he proposes to her. That is the conceit of the musical. Of course with a movie, it allows for it to "open up" certain scenes. On Broadway it's a two -character musical.

So many huge stars these days have roots in theatre, and people are just too lazy to find these kinds of things out. So before you criticize Kendrick for doing back-to-back movie musicals, think of what an honor it must have felt like to get to take these stories that mean so much to so many people, (you may not be included in that group but get over it) and bring it to the big screen. For people who thrive off theatre this is an incredible leap forward, especially since theatre is a business that so many people dismiss as nonsense these days. Support the people who represent you through the media.

I personally saw Lea Salonga as Cathy but she's way too old for the role now. I think Anna Kendrick makes a great Cathy and omg Jeremy Jordan as Jamie 💖💖 perfect match. My favorite musical finally being made into a movie!!! Cannot wait to see it. I wish people would stop hating on Anna. She's been on Broadway for years. People who can sing need to be able to sing. It's their passion.

I haven't been this much excited about a musical movie adaptation in years! A cast who acts and sings properly! Jeremy Jordan is one of the best Broadway performers nowadays, Anna is a good singer and an awesome actress. And I love P.S I Love You, so I have a big hope that this will be a great movie adaptation. AND THE JASON ROBERT BROWN CAMEO!!!! *fangirl massive scream*

As horrible as the casting was in Les Mis..I gave the director Tom Hooper HUGE kudos for filming the cast singing LIVE. Since then, I cringe every time I see someone lip-sync on screen. I keep thinking, "We know you can sing...so SING for christ sakes!". Live theatre has spoiled me and has Tom Hooper and his brilliant idea. The rest of Hollywood needs to get off their asses and let their performers PERFORM!

I agree and disagree with you. My thing is, live singing works for the performers onstage because the spaces they are singing in are (for the most part) built for singers, so you get the best sound quaility. It's quite a bit more difficult, for example, as sarah nurullah put so well, to get the best quality of sound in say a car. And if I'm being frank here, Les Mis had some of the worst live singing I've ever heard. If we're going to have performers perform, why not have all the cast members be actual singers and not (for the majority) famous actors just to pull in at the box office. In case you didn't notice, Javert's entire key was taken DOWN, which is totally unnecessary. I was so frustrated, I took my parents to see the movie, then immediately took them home to watch the 10th anniversary concert of Les Mis to show them how real singers do it.

The first time I read about 'The Last Five Years' is from our local version of it, (starring Nikki Hill) also played in Broadway.And I am so glad it's Jeremy Jordan AND Anna Kendrick. Nobody else should play these parts. Love the story and love the music!

I'm so excited you pointed that out!!!! I would not have recognized her, that makes me even more excited! I'm glad they gave her a cameo, she more than deserves it, she's a FANTASTIC Cathy, and a real game-changer in this industry IMO. Another fun fact: Take a close look at the guy that Anna hands her music to sitting at the piano. That's Jason Robert Brown!

Just watched this movie! I never saw the musical performed on stage because it never grabbed my attention except for maybe two of the songs. So I decided to watch the movie not thinking I would enjoy it. And I did, I liked it a lot. It kind of sucks cause you can deff tell the difference vocal wise, who has more training and what not. Obviously Jeremy. but anna still held her own and acting wise I felt she did great!!! And Jeremy is too fine for his own good, he just looked extra extra good in this movie!

♥Ashluv085♥ I totally agree a seasoned singer will sound much better and this is coming from a huge Kendrick fan. But I think what Anna loses in singing, wins in acting. Her acting performance and how she portrays the songs is much better than Jeremy although Jeremy's vocals were much better

I actually want her to do more musical films. Before pitch perfect she didn't do that many so I was like do more and now she is. If you don't like her singing or don't want to hear hear sing then don't watch her films simple.

What our caps-lock loving friend here is trying to say is that this has nothing to do with Hipsters. The musical, The Last Five Years, is a story about how the love of Cathy and Jamie came to be, grew, diminished, and fell apart told from the perspective of both Cathy and Jamie. Jason Robert Brown wrote the musical with seemingly parallel relationships between the plot and his own marriage. The musical is renowned for its unique method of telling the story, as Cathy tells the story from End to Beginning, while Jamie tells the story from Beginning to End, and their stories meet in the middle. Unlike many other musicals, this musical has no dialogue, entirely comprised of solos and duets between Jamie and Cathy, who are technically the only characters in the entire musical.

Bradley Boyd Technically, it's not a musical. If there is no dialog, it's an opera. It's a common mistake, but I thought I'd clarify. But yes, everything else you said is correct.
