Steven Parent was the first victim on the evening of August 8, 1969. He became the ultimate symbol for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But 18-year old Steven was much more than a victim. Now, after 50 years of silence, his high school sweetheart shares her memories of the Steven she knew and loved, her regrets over the last moments they spent together, and the trauma that remained years after his passing.

I'm from El Monte and lived on Bryant Rd (72-81) same as Steven Parent and my older siblings went to Arroyo High School❤ Soo sad her last encounter with him was a fight! Fascinating, thank you for letting Tina tell her story and not interrupting😊

For years there's been countless interviews, documentaries, and movies about Sharon Tate and her friends who were murdered. It's like Steven Parent didn't have a life. This interview with his high school girlfriend is amazing! It shows that he was a real person and not just the first victim of the brutal murders of 1969. Steven was very lucky to have Tina in his life. I read an article a while back that the press got into his parents' house and stole a bunch of pictures of him. It's appalling how Steven's family found out about his death. I'm sure Steven would be happy that Tina went on to have a good life.

@@XXdocdropXX Kevin- I have a delicate question about Steven Parent- would you mind if I asked it here? And if you feel it's appropriate, you can bring it to her and report back. Is that ok?

@@XXdocdropXX Thank you for being cool about it. I actually think what I want to know does have some historical/cultural significance in terms of what in LA life has changed since that time, and what aspects have stayed the same. That night, while at the guest house on Ciello, Steven made a phone call to a friend who lived near Waring and Highland. That friend was David Gerrold, 26 at the time, later a noted science fiction author, and at the time well known for having written the Star Trek episode The Trouble with Tribbles. Steven informed David that he was at a party with some pretty famous folks. Steven didn't mention he was nowhere near the party, just in the guest house. Steven asked if he could come over, and David agreed I believe he said he'd be there at 1am. Of course, he never showed up. Here is the delicate part. Gerrold was also known at some point years later for being one of the only openly gay science fiction authors. Since Steven had made plans with him to meet up alone at 1am it made curious about the nature of the relationship. I asked a noted recent Manson book author, who told me some things off the record, so I won't say who the author was. He told me that David and Steven were romantically linked. He told me that they were planning to move in together. And he told me who he got the info from, and lets just say it's a very reliable source. So I further extrapolate that out- Steven showing up at the guest house at 11pm to see someone he'd only met once before about buying a clock always seemed strange to me. I started to think it might have been a quick hook up between Steven and William Garretson. The author told me this scenario was possible. I'd be curious to know if this was an aspect of Steven's life your mom was aware of. I theorize that it's possible that Steve was living the typical closeted life of most gay teens at the time- and this partly caused him to act out- as he'd had some behavioral issues and run-ins with the police. I wonder if his finally meeting David helped him come to terms with it, and maybe his life was very much on the upswing. Which of course makes it all the more tragic. Kevin, I completely understand if you do not want to bring this up to your mom. Sometimes people like to maintain the memories they have, and new information like that doesn't make much sense to them. And of course, maybe their memory IS how things actually were, and people like me who speculate are dead wrong. In any case Kevin, thanks for hearing me out.

@@cadenjones2536 I also thank you for being cool about it. I’d rather not discuss these kinds of things in a public forum because it does have lots of very personal very real emotions. I do believe facts can be proven over conspiracy theories especially the way we look & dig for drama in this modern age. I know the story is titillating, but I was born only 10+ years after what happened and the story has always been the same for 40+ years. The facts the pictures are all there. My mom & uncle were both invited on the drive that night if not for the fight

Cool interviews. Thanks. But don’t you find the friendship between Steven and Father Burns a little odd ? I do. I listened to all the other interviews also. Very interesting. Poor kid was at the wrong place at the wrong time. And he’s the least mentioned victim of all of them. Very sad.

Thank you so much for this. I'm still a bit confused about one part. She says the name William Garretson and says he was Steve's best friend since first grade. Then I think she says William 'Garrison'. So are these two different people with similar names? Or was William Garretson a life long friend of Steve's?

Steve was apparently a fairly good "friend" of a Jerrold Friedman, whom Bugliosi used at the trial to establish a timeline for the murders. It was Friedman whom Parent allegedly called from the guesthouse, saying he'd come by soon. Incidentally, Friedman was a 26-year-old man, who also just happened to be a script-writer in Hollywood. He wrote the popular Star Trek episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles," in 1966. Somehow Friedman had a friendship with the 18-year old Parent, and he (under the author name "David Gerrold") even admitted this in two of his novels, which he would publish in the 1970s. In one of his tomes, he even dedicates the book to Steven Earl Parent..."Sleep well, my friend. You got the job done." A curious - if not bizarre and under-reported - subtext to this whole tale is the undercurrent of homosexuality concerning the guesthouse on the property, owned by the openly gay agent, Rudi Altobelli. It has been suspected for a long time that Rudi found its summer '69 caretaker, William Garretson, at a bar on Sunset. The guesthouse was rumored to be a meeting place for gay or bisexual men in Hollywood, and it isn't hard to imagine Mr. Friedman (whose writings seemed possessed of "survivor guilt" when talking of both real and imagined endings to the Cielo Drive murders) was perhaps supposed to meet up with Steve the night he was killed. Obviously, Steve's call and his intention to still see Friedman - even after midnight - is an indication of their familiarity. The girlfriend in this podcast (who I give tremendous kudos to) seemed like a good friend, and a genuinely caring young woman. Unfortunately, despite her own familiarity with Steve for all those years, it appears there was a side to him she never knew...
