They used to air this movie quite often on tv in South Africa. This, and the Care Bears movie. I was convinced that I would have to battle the evil forces of magic at some point in my life. Turns out it was just alcoholism and depression. The 80s lied to all of us.

@@thatonea-hole We’re all slaves (to one degree or another) to the inherent subjectivity and fragility of our brains, so yeah it’s all in our minds - but so is literally everything else we experience, interact with, influence, and get influenced by - so while the intention is to minimize the impact of that which can’t be seen or touched, the conduit by which we perceive such things is still the filter between our ears - making everything subject to the geography of our cognitive make-up. “Brains in glass jars” and all that crap. Reject the natural inclination towards believing in the empiricism of one’s own memories and experiences and instead embrace the magic that is intentionally leaving a 20 dollar bill under a couch or bed and forgetting about it so you can be pleasantly surprised every time you have to look down there.

It's released in 84', which was likely written and even filmed during 83', so lots of 70s cultural vibes were still pretty strong. The "personality" of a decade doesn't really evolve until at least the 5th year. That's why it's really late 80s movies that feel the most "80s"

except magic isn't just invisible kryptonite. All it means is that Kryptonians don't have any special resistance to magic. It's irritating when bad writers do things like disable Superman with magic and then have Batman just POWER THROUGH it and save the day. Magic should affect them both the same way. Wonder Woman would be a different story, she's descended from the Greek gods, she should have innate resistance to magic.

Catwoman and Electra in the '00s didn't help either. The Quest for Peace DID kill Superman films for thirty years, and then Returns almost did it again if not for WB being too stubborn/scared of irrelevancy/desperately wanting an MCU competitor to force Man of Steel. I remember finding this movie on a weekend and decided to watch it. I had seen other bad movies before, but I don't think I watched a movie that left me as confused as Supergirl did. Nothing made sense, nothing was established and they just tried to find excuses to make things happen for its whole runtime. It was just a weird mess of a movie.

I'm not trying to 'um akctually', because Kryptonian weaknesses/attributes change all the time, but the thing with magic isn't that they're especially weak to it, their invulnerability just doesn't do anything to stop it. It won't hurt them more than it would a human, it just doesn't hurt them any less. Kryptonite is specifically radioactive in such a way that (in more modern comics) disrupts their ability to use the yellow sun radiation that fuels their powers.
