When I first saw the Jim Carrey Grinch movie as a child, I asked my dad why all the Whos were putting their keys in the bowl. He told me it was to prevent drunk driving. If they were too drunk to identify their own keys in the bowl, then they were too drunk to drive home. I believed him for YEARS!!

Fun fact: Benadryl Cabbagepatch was going to do his normal voice, but he thought his accent would alienate him among the American accented Whos. He worried _the Grinch_ would come across as _alienated_ among the Who's. Smart character choices there, Benefit Cumberbund.

I'm even sadder, that's a lame reason for a lame performance. I didn't need an original performance, he could have just slowed down Sherlock and spoken in verse. Benedict might not find that creatively fulfilling, but I'd like it.

I feel like the Illumination movie just didn’t get what the Grinch was *supposed* to be-even if Benzene Cucumber played it like Sherlock (which honestly makes a lot more sense than the weird Rusty Venture/Dr. House thing he was doing), it still would’ve felt out of place because the rest of the movie was still written like they weren’t making the Grinch but just copy-pasting Gru from Despicable Me minus the ambition. He’s not built to be scary or intimidating, he’s a Happy Meal toy, he’s designed to look like the Build-A-Bear version of himself because Illumination never takes chances and just settles into a C- average (except when Nintendo is involved and suddenly THAT’S when they bust out their good ideas)

@@ThatRandomEncounterGuy that's true. It also just feels like higher ups can't trust that kids are smart enough to handle or like a bad guy as its protagonist. Not a Gru, not a Ralph, I mean a _bad guy_ , a character who is petty, cruel, misanthropic, and outright villainous. A character who is... well, a Grinch. But no, that's not possible. Despite the book's popularity. Despite the popularity of the Chuck Jones short. Despite the popularity of the Jim Carrey film (even if it is devisive). They didn't have to go full-on over the top bastard the way Carrey portrayed him. They could've written him to be more of a nihilist. Less social. More malicious. Less open to change at first. But Illumination doesn't take chances like that. These are the same people who turned the Onceler into a well-meaning hipster with his family being the real problem behind his actions, rather than his own. As well as adding an obvious villain to show the REAL bad guy of the movie. They don't want to make a potentially "devisive" Grinch. A potentially unlikable Grinch. They want a Grinch they can sell to the dumb dumb audience that thinks redemption is only possible if the person is already a good guy, just a little mean and rude. And yeah the only time they do take chances is when Nintendo is behind their shoulders to make sure they're writing something that is actually good enough to give to their massive fanbase (they already know how a Mario Movie turns out when they're not watching).

Like the idea of making him just a shitty neighbour who enjoys messing with the Who’s is kinda fun, problem is he seems far too sociable. Starting conversations with Cindy and having a pre-existing relationship with that one Who played by Keenan just doesn’t work in the context of him being an anti-social recluse who likes to mess with people

In "Horton hears a Who" it was established that Whoville existed on a speck of dust, so it only makes sense that at Christmas it would be on a snowflake... I remember as a kid long before the movie, I had the startling realization that the Grinch was a microscopic organism.

But that means, going by "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat", that the Cat in the Hat and by extension those kids he bothers are also microscopic. Note also that the Little Cats under his hat in "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" diminish to microscopic size relative to the Cat in the Hat, so it's possible that Little Cat Z is actually subatomic.

The creepiest thing about the kid voice is that "Who are you?" sounds plausible kid-like, but "Big Daddy" sounds like a man trying to sound like a little kid. Like maybe one of the pervy sound editors threw that in on his own without telling anybody

I have an old story from going to Universal and meeting the Grinch, who I loved (having only seen the original movie). I was six, and it was the last day of my family's vacation, the Grinch took my little autograph book and threw it in the garbage. I assume this was meant to make me laugh (and the garbage was clean, so it was fine) but I was a small child, so I started sobbing, and I've always thought this Grinch performer had a moment of "Oh no..." and then a security guard came over and "reprimanded" him, and got my book back. If his whole shtick is being a little mean to kids, it's entirely possible that it was a routine? Either way, a memory I cherish, despite how upset I was at the time.

The performances of Boris Karloff(original) & Jim Carrey(2000) are why those Grinchs are so legendary & my personal favorites😎 Both versions of the song are my go-to Christmas songs too...just so good!!!

My most vivid memory of seeing the 2000 _Grinch_ in theaters was that they showed a teaser trailer for _The Mummy Returns_ before, and it absolutely *HORRIFIED* the poor little girl behind me, hahaha. I think it was just so loud and had so many creatures that it overloaded her brain. She was borderline sobbing for a few minutes after. Barely remember seeing the movie itself... but that stuck with me.

Funny you mention Labyrinth, because it's a Jim Henson production (Henson directed the movie itself, came up with the story, got his Creature Workshop to build the different characters - Hoggle, who was voiced by his son Brian, The Fireys, etc and got his puppeteers to puppet the characters) so I'm 100% certain that the wall arms the Grinch has in this special IS a nod to Labyrinth! 😊

9:27 - maybe that’s why there’s so little continuity between these cartoons; each one stars a different Grinch rather than the same one. And there’s some law that says each Grinch must have a Max (who aren’t dogs, they’re Maxes; they just look like dogs). If they’d kept making them, eventually we’d have had a fleshed out family tree of them. Grinch: “Hey Cousin Grinch, did you here about what happened to Uncle Grinch last Christmas?” Grinch: “Yeah. I never did like that guy - I always said he was a right Scrooge.” Grinch: “Never thought he’d be quite that literal a Scrooge though.” Grinch: “At least he’s not a weirdo like my half brother though, always singing about eyebrows”

I actually really enjoyed The Mean One, as there's a LOT of little background jokes to other Suess things, like the bar and restaurant being named "Horton's" and "The Egg", or the Geisel bottle at the bar. It's clearly a low budget slasher, but for a fan of that genre, it was one of the better ones, as I felt like they knew exactly what they were doing and leaned into it in some fun ways. That all said though, if you're NOT someone like me who specifically likes low budget indie garbage, I can 100% see someone hating it most of all.

I got completely suckered in by the PS1 Grinch game. I played it a lot. It's definitely not a great game, but it is surprisingly ambitious in some ways in a time era where tie-ins could go either way. Very good music and a lot of fond memories figuring stuff out with my brother.

This is so surreal seeing you guys tackle one of my fandoms (Dr. Seuss), and snarking on it with me. The GGtCitH-Cat is one of my least favorite Cat in the Hats- he's no Allan Sherman from the 71 special who's my favorite. Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat was always more fun for the Grinch. Seeing the stage designs for the Grinch musical is confusing. Seuss's 50s-70s era of published books had such a unique use of monochromes and limited colors. In the case of the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas, he used only red and pink so most of the backgrounds are just a static white. Where I appreciate the reference to the og book, if you're already using so many colors and iconography from the other adaptations, it makes it look really bland and unfinished. Also, thanks for laying the smack down on Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss. That show bothered me so much. ESPECIALLY since it was made with Jim Henson company, it should have been great and it was a mega book crossover as well. Instead it just was agressively baby-fied and junior in a way I remember hating as a little kid vs Sesame Street. Idk, maybe it was a sign of the state of the company at that time, but it was lacking that Henson+Seuss charm somehow. 5/10.

Jim Carrey Grinch is my favorite. I like how they took a deeper look at the Grinch instead of he just hates Christmas because he hates Christmas. And that the Who's were not presented as without fault. Its not a one sided story. And Jim Carrey put sooo much energy in this performance.

The Grinch 2018 movie is definitely the worst grinch movie ever. I would definitely rank it “I want to die now”, the fact that they got Benedict Cumberbatch to voice the grinch AND NOT HAVE HIM do his Alan Rickman esq. voice, they don’t at least have him narrate the movie with that voice, but no. They had him do a nasally voice for the grinch, and have fucking Pharrell narrate the movie which was the shittiest choice ever because he sounds so fucking happy narrating the movie, which is something you wouldn’t want a grinch narrator to do. They fucking wasted Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie….. This grinch is the opposite of the grinch, he’s a dork trying too hard to make you laugh, he’s kind to max, he’s a regular townsfolk instead of being a self declared outcast, and he feels like a fricken hipster, he’s not really that mean at all, and he’s got great teeth! You know, something the grinch shouldn’t have considering that his bad teeth is always mentioned in your a mean one song….. this Grinch 2018 is one giant stinker, and the mean one rap song is absolutely shit. Hell, there was a jazz mean one song that played in the trailer which was great, they should’ve went with the jazz one! But no. They went with a shitty rap version of it….

I always adored the original grinch special when I was little, and I remember going to see the Jim Carrey version in theaters w/ my family and came away hating it because of how dour and depressing I thought the message ended up being. I stayed away from it for awhile. Then I grew up, rewatched it on a whim, and now it honestly encapsulates so much of the genuine hollowness I feel from other people around Christmas, making it an ironic favorite of mine. Great vid guys, always enjoy the two of ya'lls banter

On the original animated Grinch hating the noise. That's clearly bs he's making up to be grumpy about. He lives like five miles away on a mountain, there is no way he is actually hearing anything but the barest hum from all their partying. He's imagining it to make himself mad.

That 2020 musical ought to have just been called "Big Daddy Grinch." Feels like a lot of unsavory things came together for that. Also, if it didn't entail wearing a furry suit all day outdoors in Orlando, that Universal Studios Grinch thing would be my absolute dream job.

My personal ranking of the versions I'm familiar with: - GBC Grinch - This is my top favorite design. It works well for me in how he looks both scary and strangely cute at the same time - PS1 Grinch - I have nostalgic attachment to this game despite its flaws, as for the Grinch, I like his design and his voice channels 90s Jim Carrey which honestly I liked more than the voice he used in the movie. - Jim Carrey Grinch - My opinion on the movie has slightly changed since it came out but Jim Carrey's performance and costume was top tier - 1966 Chuck Jones Grinch - I like it but I'm not too attached to it. - Cat in the Hat Grinch - The design is a little off but I like how he was written in this special - Halloween Grinch - Not a favorite. Too mean for my taste and I don't like his design that much - Illumination Grinch: Too bland. He's less of a Grinch and more like an annoyed neighbor
